Overprotective parents and their kids binge drinking...a sad commentary

<p>A story about the worst that can happen with two of CC’s parent forum/cafe favorite topics: Over protective parents “helping” their child, and yet another story about the results of binge drinking in college.</p>

<p>What an awful story. I cannot imagine the sadness felt by the family of the girl that was killed. </p>

<p>I can understand the kids freaking out and running (not saying it’s ok, I can just understand it), they were drunk, stupid, kids, but their parents? Shame on them for not advising their kids to immediately call the police and take responsibility for what happened. What kind of parenting is that? Unbelievable.</p>

<p>About the binge drinking - it’s going on all over the country at college campuses everywhere - don’t think that if your kid is at a small school, a non Greek school, a school that doesn’t have college athletics, whatever, that it isn’t happening in their dorm or at an off campus apartment, wherever. </p>

<p>Best advice I know is to keep an open dialog with your kid about the dangers of binge drinking, driving while intoxicated, riding with anyone who has been drinking, etc. We have told our college age son and our soon to be freshman that if they have ever been drinking or are with a driver who has been drinking to take a cab - we will gladly pay for it. Hopefully, they listen and will make the right decisions when confronted with the situation. I don’t know what else to do…</p>

Probably the most disturbing item in the report. The parents drive up to meet the dirtbags, plan a coverup of a young girl’s slaughter, and then enjoy a dinner together. Yum.</p>

<p>It wasn’t clear from the article if the girl might have lived if 911 had been called immediately.</p>

<p>I hope they lock the parents up, and the girl’s parents sue them for pain and suffering for all they are worth.</p>

<p>Also interesting to note that the police tracked him through facebook as having a girlfriend in CT. Kids think that facebook/ and myspace entries aren’t read by adults and people in authority. Noting who you are going out with is not a big deal, but when I see photos and activiites that teens and young adults post, you have to wonder where their heads are! You are not posting for just your friends…anyone can read what you write or show.</p>

<p>This has to be one of the saddest stories I’ve read in a long time. Every last one of them (the 4 kids in the car & every parent) should be held to the fullest extent of the law.</p>

<p>Gee, doesn’t anyone watch Law & Order? Jack McCoy would surely throw the book at these parents! So they “turned over the SUV” to the police - just a bit late, don’t you think?</p>

<p>I wouldn’t label these parents as “overprotective” - I actually think ALL decent parents stray into “overprotective” territory every once in a while - usually event-specific. </p>

<p>“Sociopathic” is a closer fit for these parents.</p>

<p>I’m using this in my next class discussion with some teens for “Current Events”
as an object lesson in ethics.</p>

<p>If the events in the article are shown to be true, those are some of the sickest parents I’ve ever heard of. Hope their jail cell is close to these parents:</p>

<p>I didn’t realize that this was an old thread, and I had an awful shock when I saw LTS’ post. I miss her vibrant voice.</p>

<p>smiller2356 - why are you dragging up every drinking thread from the past, and you show the same link over and over again. Start your own web site if you are on a crusade. When I got on this forum today, I was surprised to see all of those alcohol related threads.</p>
