Owe college some grant money but can't pay. Do I have any options?

I’m currently disabled and had to move back in with my mom. I can’t work and she doesn’t make enough to give me the money. Am I screwed?

Contact your college and find out what you need to do. At the very least, work out a payment plan of some sort.

I’ll try but I don’t know how good a payment plan would help me when I don’t have any money.

Are you collecting disability?

Is this a temporary disability or permanent?

Are you saying there is NO kind of work you can do…nothing at all?

Not collecting disabilities. I guess you could consider it temporary because i would have to see lots of doctors and get on expensive medicine for a chance of it helping. I can’t leave the house so yes nothing i can do atm.

With no income and unable to work, it sounds like you can’t pay anything at this point.

Are you trying to go back to school? If so, how will you pay for any of that?

If you are THAT disabled, how would you even be able to go back to college? That isn’t exactly a no work situation.

I would suggest you contact vocational rehabilitation in your state. Perhaps they can give you guidance or help finding a job that is within your ability to work.

Figure out what your health insurance covers in terms of care so that you can get better.
Once you’re better or if they determine you can’t work and must be on disability, plan to use half your earnings toward paying back the debt so that you can pay it off as fast as possible, and work out a payment plan with the college.

You won’t be allowed to register with any college until you’ve paid your bill (there’s a national Clearinghouse, checking) and a college degree is often necessary for better paying jobs.

However at this point it sounds like you’re unable to leave your house and thus can’t attend college. Get better first.

Also what do you mean by “I owe grant money”?

(Avoid for profit colleges that promise you a quick degree: by definition they’re in it for the profit, not for your Education. Thousands of people got into debt due to their promises and found no job - most employees consider a for profit college diploma to be worthless, v. a non-peodit/for-Education college. An AS at. Lock community college is the way to go even if they don’t promise you’ll be done quickly - there are no shortcuts for a solid degree.)

I’m guessing you’ve dropped out and have to repay some of a Pell Grant back? Were you over paid or something? I’m trying to figure out why you have to repay grant money.

You should apply for disability to try to pay your debt and help you Mom support you until you can do more.

There are some work from home jobs. They can be difficult to find but I work mostly from home and have several friends who work entirely from home. It’s largely part-time data entry unless you have particular skills. I happen to work for a small music non-profit and it allows me to be home with a small child. They don’t all pay great but it could be something if you are looking at a long period of disability.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes I had to drop out sadly. There was a mixup on the day I withdrew is why I owe the money. I’ve already talked to the financial aid department and there’s nothing they can do about it. I know nothing about data entry. Do you have to type fast? My hands don’t allow for that much.

If you withdrew, you must have the grant money since you didn’t use it for college?

It doesn’t work that way - if you withdraw too late in the semester, you still owe the tuition, so the grant has to be paid back.

OP you need to get medical help - you don’t have income, so you might qualify for Medicaid, and should apply. If you don’t get treatment there is no way you will qualify for disability, because you need to show that you are still unable to work (or to work a regular number of hours) due to your disability, even with treatment. I has to be a part of your medical history for a period of time, except in certain cases. The college can’t get blood from a stone, and you’re not planning to return to school yet, so don’t worry too much about it. Just be aware it will have to be paid back before you can get any financial aid elsewhere. The idea to pay it back with disability payments is not a bad one, but with permanent disability (if you qualify) aons can be forgiver, I don’t know about repayment of grants though.
