For Oxford

2004:

270 applications, ~ 1 in 5 successful (~20.0%), ~54 (45-67) accepted

http://web.archive.org/web/20051023202915/http://www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/int/usa/

2005:

312 applications, ~ 1 in 6 successful (~16.6%), ~52 (45-62) accepted

http://web.archive.org/web/20060702023613/http://www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/int/usa/

2006:

X applications, ~ X in X successful (~X%), 28 offers conditional on AP / SAT (this would not include the number of unconditional offers—though, likely, extremely few—nor those who received an IB offer. The paper includes IB conditional offers, but that number is bloated with other internationals.)

The Oxbridge title confused me - I finally figured out it must be a combination of Oxford and Cambridge. Did you mean to do that?

Oxbridge is English equivalent of the term HYP.

The UK has the most amazingly straightforward app system called UCAS. However–beware that Oxbridge UCAS apps must be lodged before Sept 20th.

There is a lengthy on-topic essay required but none of that Oprah-esque personal soft-sell business. The UCAS app requires a detailed listing of all courses taken.

Also, an applicant must apply to a certain college at Oxbridge–meaning that an app must research the colleges and the subjects offered and the admission rates for that college for that subject. http://www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/apply/ Some subjects in some colleges have a lower admit rate than the one stated above. Popular subjects in popular colleges are extremely difficult to get into–as they sometmes only take a handful of students.

An on-site interview is required from the US.

Interviews are done in big US regional cities. For example, academics are sent to New York by the Universities. Candidates from cities as far away as Washingon DC would be called to interview in New York City. Candidtates are not expected to travel to the UK.

You are mistaken bin. Interviews are only done in New York in the US. As they expect candidates to be wealthy enough to afford intl tuition, they would absolutely expect candidates to make the 6 hour journey for the interview.

There is some value in going to Oxbridge for the the interviews as you are competing for spots in specific colleges.

“There is some value in going to Oxbridge for the the interviews as you are competing for spots in specific colleges.”

No, not necessarily. All that means (in the case of Oxford, anyway) is that you will be interviewed as if you were at that college, not that you actually have to be there. It would be a little unfair for international applicants otherwise!

They won’t ask you why you chose a particular college in the interviews, by the way. They can’t, because some people don’t have a preference and will be assigned colleges, and they can’t penalise for this.

Oxbridge! an interesting name.

Exactly, as in the case of pooled candidates.

People in my school (in Dubai) did video link interviews or phone interviews…though others went to oxbridge.

I did a phone interview for my university…
