Obviously, your decision is between two very different universities. In my opinion, this means that you should do everything possible to ensure that you make the right choice. It’s not like choosing between two liberal arts colleges, where the implications of one’s choice are much less because they are similar choices. Attending IUIC is, no doubt, much different than attending Oxford college.

IUIC is a huge state university with prestigious graduate and research programs, and Oxford is a tiny liberal arts college in rural Georgia. To put the size difference into perspective, IUIC offers some classes which are nearly as big as the student body at Oxford (700 people). As such, students at IUIC probably do not have intimate relationships with their professors and their peers. Oxford, on the other hand, is like a tight-knit family. When the entire freshman class is 350 people and the students live together on campus in rural Georgia, one can imagine that students get to know their professors and peers very well.

" Is it worth going? "

I would say that Oxford is worth going if:
- it works out financially
- one has visited and comes to terms with the realities of attending a tiny college in rural Georgia
- one really wants to attend Emory after two years

" Oxford seems pretty small, so it surprises me that it seems to be much less competitive to enter than Emory."

The politically correct answer is that “Oxford is for those students who want to attend college in a smaller environment before enrolling at Emory.” While this is true, it is also true that Oxford is for those students who want to attend Emory but did not get admitted.

" do most people dislike Oxford? "

I’ve heard mix opinons from past students. Some hated it, citing that it is boring and too intimate. Others liked or didn’t mind the intimate experience.

Personally, if I was you, I would attend UIUC unless Emory was my dream university. Why would I make this choice?

1) Emory is transfer friendly (22% acceptance rate for FEMALES), so if I maintained a high GPA at IUIC, I would be pretty confident that I could transfer afer my freshman year.
2) IUIC seems like it’s much better financially
3) I think that I like the UIUC atmosphere and location more than that of Oxford
4) For liberal arts, I don’t see why an Oxford/Emory degree would be that much, if at all, more valuable than a IUIC degree
