Oxford Visiting Student

Hi I was just wait listed at St. Catherine’s College and I wanted to know if anyone knows how many visiting students they accept or how many they put on the wait list? I really feel like I’m in limbo any information would be greatly appreciated. Also I’m 3rd on the wait list.

Hey there! I was recently accepted to St. Peter’s College as a visiting student, and I heard they typically take between 20-30 visiting students at each college per year. I hope that helps, and best of luck to you :)

Sound extremely unlikely because if every college took 30 visiting students per year, that would be 1200 visiting students in total. In my experience there are less than 100 visiting students in total at any one time (there isn’t space for another 1200 stduents even if they wanted them). Unless you mean summer students - colleges renting out hteir rooms to private education companies in the summer. there are hundreds of those, but the education provided has nothing to do with University of Oxford.

I was recently accepted to study abroad in the fall at Hertford College and wish you the best of luck. I can tell you that there are about 7 or 8 colleges at Oxford that take visiting students. Most of these colleges take between 20-25. I know for Hertford they have a max of 25 visiting students per term. Most of the other students who are visiting with me at Hertford will be there for the full year, while the several students (like myself) that are only going for the fall, will be replaced by the same number who will go in the Spring (keeping the number at 25). But cupcake is corrected, it is not every college, only about 7. Some of these only take students for the full year, while around 5 colleges take applicants for just fall and spring terms, as well as full year terms. Hope this helps. Also, cupcake is correct with regards to studying abroad over the summer. It is completely different and much easier. I’m not sure what university you currently are attending, or what your GPA is like…but just to give you an idea (at least for Hertford visiting students) most visiting students with me are from Ivy Leagues and top 20 LAC’s with at least a 3.8 GPA. Good luck, and hope this helps.

the 3.8 is a requirement at Oxford. Cambridge has a 3.7 requirement /wink

can’t say about the prestige factor and how that is impacted by the fact that top 20s have connections that publics don’t, but i certainly find an overabundance of humanities majors in these programs.
