Oxford vs Göttingen mathematics master programme

Hello everybody

I was accepted by both Oxford and Göttingen fot their master in mathetics programme. I am not sure what programme I should choose.

Oxford’s programme lasts a year and Göttingen’s programme two. Both of them have reaserch groups and offer lectures in algebraic geomerty, which is what I want to do.
I know Göttingen was the best place for studying mathematics until its decline in the 1930s under the nazi regime. I do not know if Göttingen has recovered its former academic level.

I want to do a doctorate in mathematics after my master, but it is very difficult to me to choose between both of them.

Can somebody help me? Does anyone know anything about those Universities? Any information you could give me I would really appreciate it.

Thank you

There are types of world rankings you can look at for relative placement. But why don’t you ask your math professors since you are also concerned with the specialty area. Which country will you be applying for PhD in? Everyone has heard of Oxford of course. I don’t know the other one, but that may not be meaningful.

Georg August Universität Göttingen is in Germany in the town of the same name.

It was the place for studying mathematics in the begining of the 20th century. David Hilbert, Emmy Noether, Emil Artin, Karl Frederich Gauss, Hermanm Minkowski, Klein, Riemann and many other famous mathematicians worked or study there. The nazi regime ruined it in the 1930s.

You are fluent in German? I see elsewhere you mention you applied to German programs that are taught in English, are you very sure? I think you need to evaluate the program for how it suits your needs currently. Do you want 2 yr program or one year? What does each program give you? Will you perhaps look to a PhD next and which would you hope to accept you for that? Or what country will you work in? Oxford is ranked very highly as in one of the world’s topmost universities and also in mathematics. This one looks very strong too, but not at that level. But maybe the Applied Geometry is. This board is U.S. oriented, I don’t know if you find something for international uni’s. Check thegradcafe.com math discussion also.

The programme at Göttingen is taught entirely in English. Besides that I am learnin German. I am not fluent yet, but I can read math text in German. What worries me is what I read in UK forums about Oxford. I read that Oxford is declining and does not have good applicants. Perhaps that is why I was accepted. In any case I do not care about prestige, I am concerned about academic level. Thanks for your replies.

Well I’m all for you investigating the best program. But saying one university is declining from 5th place so I will pick one in 115th place doesn’t make sense. Were these math forums talking about mathematics study? If not try some math forums if math stack exchange has a place for such questions, if not academic stack exchange maybe?

Thank you for your replies. I will try to decide which programme suits me best.
