ECs that are relevant to the subject that you hope to study can help to demonstrate your interest in, understanding of, and aptitude for that subject.
I have seen a student accepted with just 3 SAT subject tests- but he blew the aptitude test out of the water, and could not sit APs b/c he was competing (successfully) in international competitions in his subject. In general, there is a preference for APs over SAT subject tests.
