Hi! I am a participant in this summer’s pre-college program at Penn. I read the following in the handbook :
‘A student may choose the P/NP grading option, however, P/NP grades are often not transferable to other institutions. It is the student’s responsibility to understand the importance of his/her decision and to discuss their options with their parents.’
I really have no idea what P/NP is, could you please explain it to me?

and one more thing, is there mattress on bed at penn quad, because nown I am wondering whether to buy a linen set(blanket, pillows, linens and towels) offered by Upenn.

I think P/NP is Pass/Fail. Instead of a letter grade on your transcript, it is only designated whether or not you passed the course. It doesn’t affect your GPA.

The linnen set from Penn is a ripoff. You just need to go to Bed Bath and Beyond or Target, or somewhere else (lots of places have college sales over the summer) and buy twin Xtra Long sheets. All quad rooms come with a bed and mattress for each person living in the room.

and if you choose the p/np option, the lack of a letter grade will mean that you cannot use the course for credit at wherever you end up for college

so it kinda sucks if you do well, earn an a, and then it just becomes a p

In fairness to the Penn linen set, I run that program from Penn’s side and have negotiated a higher quality of linens to be offered on campus.

Anyway, about Pass/Fail, don’t do that. Take it for a grade.

Here are scenarios where P/F is appropriate: Wharton students taking language courses; College seniors who need the credits to graduate but realize after their first assessment that they are going to get a poor grade; precollege students … NEVER EVER EVER!

Take a course, get credit for it, show your performance. If you don’t, you shouldn’t be taking a college course!
