Pachinko - June CC Book Club Selection

It’s time for a sweeping family saga! Our June CC Book Club selection is Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, the story of four generations of a Korean family who resettle in Japan, where prejudice against their Korean heritage prevents them from ever feeling at home. That brief description does not do justice to the novel’s rave reviews across the board. Pachinko was a National Book Award Finalist and a New York Times Book Review Top Ten of the Year.

Discussion begins June 1st. Please join us!

I am thrilled that you are doing this book. I received it for Christmas and was immersed in the story for a number of day. It returned my faith in the pull and transformative power of a great novel.

^ wonderful testimony from @greatlakesmom ! Excited

Count me in.

Count me in.

I’ve been wanting to read it since I read the review, but I needed a nudge. So I am happy.

My book is already available at the lib. I think I’m going to get it and read it now and then take it out again later and reread it right before our discussion. Assuming it’s on hold for other people when I finish it, I won’t be able to renew it.

I’m 40 on the waitlist for the book and think it should be available in time. No e-books in our county library system, only physical books and 40 of those.
So many things were happening at the same time in our family that I was too busy to weigh in with my book choices. Happy to see that my top choice has been picked. :-*

It’s worth waiting for!! I was happy for my insomniac moments – "found time " for a fabulous book deserving of the hype.

I haven’t participated in the CC book club to date but I just finished Pachinko so June looks like the month to start! Great read.

My in-real-life book club is reading Pachinko in May, so this looks like my chance to join you all.

@mary13 Pachinko has struck a nerve- good momentum with so many newbies expressing enthusiam for book and joining in next time !

I’m about halfway through the book and really enjoying it. It’s long, but an easy read.

Just ordered on Amazon.

I finished the book. I enjoyed it very much, but I have a ton of questions and plan to review it at least once more before June. I’m eager for the discussion to help me understand lots of things.

Just started it yesterday - enjoying

Holding off on reading it until our trip in two weeks.
Reading “Educated” now–not very good at al.

Here’s a timely article from today’s New York Times. (They’ve been printing obituaries of long-dead people who were “overlooked.”)

@VeryHappy

Do you usually read the Book Discussion books 2x before the discussion?

I just finished the book I was listening to, and I’m ready to start Pachinko. Wondering if I should wait until we get closer to June, or plan to review or re-listen to it.

My memory is a sieve.

I seldom reread.

I keep my book handy in case I need to look something up but that’s about it.
