Any thoughts? She’s got a perfect SAT score and interesting extra-curriculars.

Thanks!

ucbalumnus, thanks! What are the main differences between the schools like UBC in Canada and colleges here?

American students would be international students there. Tuition for international students is higher than for Canadian students.

You can compare admission, costs, and curricula at Canadian universities to US universities from information on their web sites.

If your daughter’s stats are high, she’ll likely get the $10,000CAD per year merit scholarship for international students.

The issue with UBC, at least I think, is that it’s an very crowded public school, and there’s no jobs in Canada.

Your daughter should also consider applying to the Honors Program at the University of Washington.

UBC would be a good choice. US News & World Report just ranked UBC as the 27th best university in the world, in the same group with Duke, Cornell, Northwestern and NYU. I don’t believe that UBC is more crowded than a top-rated U.S. public school like UCLA. By the way, U-Washington is ranked at #10 in the world in the same USNWR 2018 global ranking–tied with Yale and Johns Hopkins. So, I’d say your best choice, other things being equal, would be UW. But as for UBC, it is well-recognized in the U.S. by major employers (especially on the west coast), and so I think it would be fine for someone to do engineering there and work in Silicon Valley or elsewhere in the USA (in terms of UBC’s recognition and reputation with employers). Just my 2 cents…

Here’s the link to the new 2018 USNWR global ranking of universities. I don’t think these rankings are precisely accurate, but broadly speaking I think they give a sense of the reputation and quality of the institutions.
