Okay so I was just wondering do regular double dorms have stuff like a fridge/microwave/kitchen??? Am I allowed to bring a toaster? (I like bread) how big are the rooms? Are they spacious? Carpeted or hardwood? Does it have two desks/beds/enough room for two college people? How big are the closets? Are there dressers with lots of drawers? Please help!!!
You can count on the following for sure, but until you have a dorm assignment some questions probably can’t be answered. (My kid is a Mudder who traveled from far away, so we had some of the same questions):
- There will be enough desks and beds and dressers for however many people are in the room (warning: if any college over enrolls, meaning they get more students accepting their offers than expected, you CAN end up in a triple as a freshman -- I assume it can happen at Pomona just like at everyplace else!).
- You will have a closet of your own (except I think when they have "forced triples" at some colleges, you might not... probably won't happen, though). Whether it is sufficient space or not depends on your and your stuff...
- Once you know what dorm you are in, you can find out if there are common kitchen areas. The college will also provide info on what is and isn't allowed in housing (like toasters, hot plates, microwaves, etc).
- You might need to bring your own wastebasket
- Most dorm rooms aren't carpeted...too hard to keep clean.
- The room itself will not have a kitchen, fridge, or microwave. Sometimes there is a common area kitchen (mentioned above), and sometimes they might have a fridge. Lots of students buy or rent mini-fridges for their rooms. Some dorm rooms at some colleges have sinks in the rooms (some are rooms that are part of suites that have their own bathroom that just a few rooms share).
General advice… Wait until you have a dorm assignment and a roommate assignment to worry too much about dorm room stuff. See what your roommate plans to bring. Take less stuff than you think you need – you can pick up stuff over break, or have your parents mail it to you. Wait a couple more months to shop for stuff.

THANK YOU
There is a really good thread called something like the A-Z thread on what to pack (or not pack) for college. I fear it might push you over the edge :), but here is the link. Try not to start purchasing and packing now!

Note: it is 10 years old, some stuff won’t make sense any more! And you probably need about 20% of what is on this list, it is everything you COULD bring to college (are you really going to pack fruit juice, especially if you are coming from far away??). But this might remind you of a few things you would otherwise forget (eg, small sewing kit, etc.).
