Painting question tray ceiling

I have two tray ceilings in my new downsized home. One is in the small foyer that gets some light but not a lot. The other is in our master bedroom which gets plenty of light. I have selected a sandy colored light tan (SW Kilm Beige) for both areas for the walls. I had a painter in today to give me an estimate and he suggested I paint the ceiling of the trays with a color that is two shades darker(SW Latte) I am looking for confirmation, suggestions and/or advice.

That is what Christopher Lowell (designer–Seven Layers of Design) suggests for tray ceilings. Two shades darker. Good advice. It looks great (I did it in my house). Don’t wimp out and go same shade or just one shade darker as walls (it looks different up on the ceiling). I sometimes think I could have gone even a shade darker for the tray especially for light colored beige colors in bright spaces.

Thanks Gouf. Did you bring your wall color all the way up to the final ceiling panel?

Yes. Good Luck!

Go two shades darker ! I’m so glad you have a good painter.

The tray in our sunshine filled MB is white and it is boring, boring, boring! Even worse is that it is out of the can “ceiling white”. Ours is the orange peel texture so I am not sure how that would look painted darker. Some folks compromise and paint the angle a color and leave the the flat surface white.
