I’m pretty close to that. I only rarely have bread or pasta or grains or rice or potatoes. I just eat large portions of meat or poultry or seafood and large portions of veggies or salads. Instead of rice, I cook Chinese stir-fries and serve them over stir-fried brocolli. Instead of toast or hash browns with breakfast, I have an extra piece of bacon and a third egg…

I was always very fit and could eat anything I wanted. When I hit my forties, a couple of years in, I started to put on some weight, and it was uncomfortable for me since I’d never dealt with that.

A friend said you just can’t eat processed carbs after forty. She was right. I cut out all processed carbs, wheat, starches, etc… and got back to normal in about two weeks. I haven’t had a potato, pasta or bread in five years. I never eat sugar unless it is a fruit.

I eat lean protein, and sometimes even very fatty protein, all the butter and olive oil and veggies and fruit I want. For the rest of the family, I make pasta or rice or potatoes. I just don’t eat them. Now, they are calling this paleo? Okay. Just make the normal dinner and the “paleo” guy can eat the veggies and salad and meat or fish. It’s the easiest thing in the world, really, nothing like when my oldest was a vegetarian for ten years. THAT was a pain.

Poetgrl, I think you and your friend are ahead of your time. I wish someone would have told me not to eat a processed carb after I turned forty! The thing that most amazes me about eating Paleo (yes I have decided to go Paleo too - if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em!) is how you don’t feel hungry all the time. You eat, feel satisfied, and then don’t think about food or eating for several hours. There are some foods I miss, but not as much as I thought I would. You are right, it is easy to make a rice or potato dish for the non Paleos and still stay on the bandwagon.

I agree about the carbs after 40. I have not given them up completely, and I believe that some are fine for me (brown rice, potatoes), but white rice, bread of any kind, crackers, don’t work well for me any more. By that I mean not only that they promote weight gain but also that they make me feel sluggish.

And for me, this didn’t happen until 50. In my 40’s, I still had my old metabolism.
