Palm Springs hotels??

^ but the old charm of Palm Springs is what makes it so great. There are “cooler” places close to Palm Springs, but they are not the same thing. I’m not saying they aren’t worthy, just different.

I’m just going to add that we stayed in LaQuinta last summer and took a jeep tour into the mountains at sunset with a fabulous guide that showed us an oasis, slot canyons, the SanAndreas fault etc. My 22 yo S is still talking about that tour.

Just a heads up…but Modernism Week is from February 13-23 and during that time hotel reservations tend to be hard to get. I tried to get reservations at some of the home tours and most are already booked up. I love Palm Springs and usually go at least once or twice a year. I like some of the refurbished mid century modern bungalow style hotels or motels. But the accomodations are probably not as deluxe as you are seeking. You might want to check out the Riviera. http://www.psriviera.com/palm-springs-resort-deals.aspx?/_vsrefdom=theriviera-ppc&gclid=CK-F1Iyr07sCFRSFfgodIDkA7A</a> . And make a reservation at Trio for dinner. Enjoy!!!

I really wanted to attend Modernsism Week. We have done similar things in Portland and in Santa Fe and it was great. It turns out our only time that is good for both of us is in two weeks. We have our air and are still working on the hotel.

We are leaning towards La Quinta for this trip. Typically we like boutiques and smaller places but this time it is the pools and food and beds that reign.
La Quinta is so big! Any advice on what area to stay in and what type of room?
I am not easy going when it comes to accommodations. I want nice bedding and good light and a balcony. It upsets me to have a drab dark room as the dark and gloom is what I am trying to escape. We have had fog for nearly a week and I want light.

Thanks and keep you wonderful suggestions coming. I have been looking into every idea.

We called La Quinta–the price for the same room went up $150 since yesterday! They evidently change their prices 2-3 times a day. If we notice and call they will honor the lower price.
We talked and booked a room at Hotel California for 1/3 the price. It looks like a nice place but not a resort.
Still open to suggestions.

I’ve stayed at the Hotel California—nice people run it. A little funky(not dirty–just old fashioned), but they are very sweet, offer free bikes, a kitchen with everything you need. The pool is very small. But we enjoyed our stay very much. The same people have another hotel right down the street that’s got a slightly larger pool. I think it’s the Desert Riviera.

I’ve heard some strange things about the Hotel California- such a lovely place, you can check out any time you’d like, but you can never leave.

My personal opinion is Hotel California might not be exactly what you are looking for. Did you look at Miramonte? About halfway between big La Quinta and small hotel.

I’m sorry, let me be a little more specific. In older Palm Springs area most of the “hotels” are really converted motels. You need to look closely at the photos. Although they have been remodeled really cute, themes and all, they don’t have a lot of privacy or landscaping.

Palm Springs (as compared to the larger family or spa resorts further down the valley) is a large gay vacation destination. Sometimes guests can be very surprised with the “flavor” of their hotel. So make sure you check some reviews, etc.

Oregon, I just heard from a friend who is going to attend some sort of an international protein society meeting in Palm Springs in the middle of January (Jan 12-18, I think). I think this could be the reason the hotels are getting expensive! Imagine hordes of biology nerds all over the place! I would definitely look at Palm Desert and beyond.

Hiking in the canyons is great and can be made as sternous or as easy as one wishes by choosing an appropriately rated trail. Gorgeous area!

We are now booked at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells on the Regency floor (food and services)so hope this is a good choice. It is next to the adult pool.
I will continue to check the La Quinta prices but this was much more reasonable.
Thoughts?

Bought tickets to the Follies --this is their last season. Has anyone here been?
Also made a reservation at Trio–thanks for the tip!

Follies are very popular. My elderly parents go every year - not insinuating that you are elderly  But the show is definitely geared to the WWII generation.

You will have a wonderful time in Indian Wells but it is a long drive to the Follies from that location.

Thought I would give an update and thanks for all of you who shared your ideas.
We found the Hyatt nice enough. The room was spacious and clean and we had a gorgeous view over the pools looking at the mountains. I would not call it luxurious but was nice enough and we did get a very good price. We stayed on the club floor and the nightly appetizers made a dinner the first night and the breakfast’s were very good. They did charge for drinks but they were easily doubles for $5.
The pools were a nice temperature and the poolside food was fast and quite tasty.
The Follies were a bit of a mixed bag. The costumes were amazing but we were a bit bored with the rest. The MC tried to make fun of everyone in order that no one would be offended but it just did not go over. It is an old type of humor and just not funny in this new age.
Went to the tram and hiked a bit at the top. Walked around Palm Desert and Palm Springs and La Quinta resort.
Our food was fabulous. Loved Trio! Lantana in the Hyatt had the best filet mignon I have ever had. The Scirroco (sp?) in the Esperalda was very elegant.
Thanks for all of you in put. The weather was great two days and nice one. Will definelty return.

Glad you enjoyed Trio! I think it has the right “vibe” for PS.
