Paranoia?

If I received a scholarship to a public institution that is guaranteed for four years so long as I maintain a particular GPA, is there any chance that the scholarship could be taken away from me because of politics?

I attend a public university in Massachusetts on a full (merit) scholarship and there’s an upcoming gubernatorial race. There’s been a lot of back and forth regarding one candidate’s track record of supporting bills that cut funding to higher ed. I’ve been paranoid recently that the scholarship might be pulled from me arbitrarily because of one of these theoretical higher ed cuts, but I’m not entirely sure how protocol for it would even work.

As a side note, my school states that it receives only 30% of the funds it uses for merit scholarships and need based aid from the Commonwealth - the other 70% comes from philanthropy on the part of “alumni and friends of the University.”

If a majority of the scholarship funding is coming from endowments, I doubt you will have an issue when it comes to politics. Even if there were some sort of higher ed cuts, I am sure that everyone who had some sort of merit scholarship would be “grandfathered” in - so they would continue to receive the scholarship until they were done with school. Imagine the outrage there would be if that those who were promised a 4 year scholarship based on GPA lost it in the middle of their schooling. I think you will be fine
