Paranoia

I’ve been admitted to my top choice, but just to keep options open I asked about their deferment policy-- where an admitted student is allowed to defer enrollment 1 year. I emailed the graduate administrator secretary to ask about it. Now I am paranoid because I have yet to receive the “official admission” from the graduate office-- I’ve only been recommended for admission by the committee. Is it completely irrational to be worried about this inquiry re: deferment affecting my official admission?

Don’t worry about it. Asking a question about their deferment policy is not going to affect the Graduate School’s processing of your file.

Why defer? Y’know… there are other people who would kill for your spot.

I think don’t worry about it.
If they did get wind that you asked one question and decided to reject you…that would be silly and I don’t think they would be that cut-and-dry.
You should be allowed to ask questions ! and i’m sure you are. I don’t think word would get around anyways…because the admissions secretary probably just thought of it as a random inquiry and answered your question then forgot all about it !

I imagine a departmental or school secretary fields hundreds of emails a day, many from random prospective students asking about this or that policy. I doubt she keeps a list of all the people who ask about deferment (or offer rejection/acceptance deadlines, financial aid packages, the acceptable graduation GPA drop window or anything of the sort that could be construed as negative) and ships it over to the university graduate office so they can happily toss out tons of application files from numerous departments and skip all the annoying transcript rechecks and whatnot for those unfortunate souls.

This is indeed paranoia.
