so my dad filled the married but filling jointly tax return. the problem is that he got divorced in November. However, he still pays all the expenses and everything stayed pretty the same except that my parents are legally divorced. can he fill that tax return? also, i need the tax return for fafsa and i already submitted the CSS profile ( which i put divorced). so now there is a huge conflict. what do i do? my deadline is feb 1st D’:

If the divorce was final before December 31st, then he’d need to go back and amend his return. It won’t be the end of the world - if the school financial aid offices have a question, they’ll ask. Are you sure he’s already filed his 2012 return???

Also, the schools don’t expect you to have the tax return completed by Feb. 1 - just the FAFSA and CSS Profile. Both can be amended later if the numbers you use turn out not to be accurate.

yes. what would happen if i use this tax return to file for fafsa just so i can meet the deadline? can i make adjustments later?

Cross-posted! Take another look at my (edited) post above. :)

I thought the IRS wasn’t accepting returns until Jan. 30.

^ They apparently are but no refunds until after 30 Jan.
