Parent Not Doing FAFSA - Student Handling

Working with a parent with this situation and would appreciate some guidance.

Student’s parent has handled the FAFSA since the start, in large part because parent did not want student to have knowledge about parent’s financial situation and also because there were very real concerns about student’s ability to handle it. Due to the student’s life decisions, the parent is not continuing with handling the completion of the FAFSA for next year, turning the responsibility to the student.

Can the student begin the FAFSA as a “new process” without having access to prior year records? If not, would the student be able to review prior year FAFSA’s? Must the student still include the parent’s financial information (student is over 21) or can it be based solely on the student’s financial situation (no savings and no employment)? Parent wants to have no involvement moving forward yet also needs to safeguard information that the student may not access. Any guidance appreciated.

The student needs to be 24 to NOT nclude parent info on the FAFSA. Making poor life choices does not eliminate the need to provide parent financial information for this student. The FAFSA will need to be completed with 2013 tax year info from both the parents and the student. The parents will need to file their taxes so that the school can use the IRS retrieval tool to verify accuracy of the tax/income information.

If the parents are not going to provide the necessary financial info for this student, it is unlikely that his application for aid will be considered.

This student is dependent for financial aid purposes, and therefore MUST provide financial info from the parents on the FAFSA.

The student already has access to the previous FAFSAs. All the student needs is HIS PIN number to gain access to any previously filed FAFSA.

Yes the student should be able to access last year FAFSA. In fact, If the student renew his/her current year FAFSA, last year information will carry over to this year.

He/She will needs his/her parents’ information if he/she is a dependent student. See http://www.asa.org/about-us/contact/asa/parents-information-on-fafsa.aspx

The student is not “independent” until 24 (or marriage and a few other exceptions). The parent should have a different pin than the student and both the parent and the student must electronically sign the FAFSA with their individual pin numbers. The pin numbers remain the same year after year. My only suggestion would be for the student to share his/her pin with his parent(s) and let the parent fill out the FAFSA in total. But technically the student could still access the information with his/her pin at any time. Technically not what is supposed to happen, but I’m guessing many parents end up filling out the FAFSA for their students for convenience sake since after freshman year the kids are busy this time of year. If the parent wants “no involvement” then the student could potentially not receive any federal financial aid. There is a form somewhere that a student can fill out to potentially receive the federal direct loan without the parents information. If I have time to find the thread with info I’ll post later.

^Not just no involvement, no support too.

More see See https://fafsa.ed.gov/fotw1314/help/fahelp29a.htm

No support, no involvement…including that parent cannot have this student as a dependent on their taxes. Can’t provide insurance, nada. It’s NOT just saying “I, the parent, won’t complete the FAFSA.” it is much more complex than that.
