Parenting students

Hello Im A new mother and I have been to college before but i was wondering if anyone knew of any colleges or universities in pennsylvania that allow student to attend while living on campus

Do you mean living on campus, in college housing, with your child, and taking courses towards a bachelor’s degree?

If so, I don’t know of any. Most dorms really aren’t set up to be appropriate for children – no cooking facilities, no places for them to play, and most single rooms would not be large enough to accommodate a crib. Apartment-style rooms with kitchens are available some places, but generally for multiple students, and including a mother-child pair would be tough. Some universities have graduate-student housing that would be appropriate for children to live in, though.

That’s not to say that no college has this, but I don’t know of one.

A better bet (and cheaper! – college housing is rarely a bargain) would be a nearby off-campus apartment or house share. That would be available almost anywhere. And I think most colleges have convenient child care centers.

I googled–“Colleges for single mothers” and Wilson College in Pennsylvania popped up.
I don’t have any personal knowledge about this school. Maybe someone else on CC has info regarding this school.

Smith College has the Ada Comstock Scholars Program for women whose education has been interrupted for a variety of reasons, including child rearing. The college is in Massachusetts not Pennsylvania, though.

Here is a link in case you are interested.

My Smithie daughter tells me the Adas have their own housing, but she did not know if their children can live on campus.

Many schools that have family housing for graduate students will also allow undergraduates with family to petition to qualify for this “graduate” family housing. I recommend contacting the housing dept of the schools you are considering.

Is there anywhere you can go to school close to where you’re living now? Many young moms need family support to continue their educations. It can be very expensive to try to “go away to school,” and pay for child care.
