So I know that my parents are about to divorce (my mother and my stepfather) soon, and I already applied to all of the colleges and and sent my financial aid material. Because of this, my stepfather would not contribute any to my college tuition (not that he was going to in the first place anyways), and the burden would all fall on my mom. I’m wondering if I should contact the financial aid offices and let them know about this. I definitely need a lot of financial aid at this point to be able to afford college, but I don’t want to sound like a beggar at the same time. What should I do?
Contact the colleges…but you will need to provide documentation of the divorce or separation.
Also, if your mom receives spousal support, that will be counted on your financial aid forms.
So they are separated now? Living apart? Is your NCP in this picture, financially?
Check each website for their “Special Circumstances” requirements. It should be somewhere in the financial aid pages. That will help you know what information ou and your mother will need to provide.
