parents, can you please help me?

for my summer reading we have to read

The Sound and the Fury-Faulkner
Innocents Abroad-Twain
and pick one of a group of four, of which i chose
Dave Barry Slept Here-Barry

so,

we have all these required things to do with them, and the first one on the list(to do for the sound and the fury and the one of our choice) says…

Biography-1. Provide one concise paragraph on biographical detail, omitting specific birth or death dates.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???
are we supposed to do a biography of the authors?
or something else?

Yep, I believe that you’re being asked to provide a biography for each author.

Though I suppose it’s conceivable that you are supposed to proved a biography of one of the characters.

Well, with the omission of “birth or death dates,” I’m thinking authors…

I would say that you are being asked for a short bio on each author: I suppose you are expected to write more about the author’s style, techniques (stream of consciousness etc.) , what influenced his writing, than a simple where he was born, lived, schooled etc.

But perhaps not…

But why ask them to omit birth and death dates? If it’s a character it’s because they aren’t available even though it’s a standard part of a biography. Any way you can get in touch with the teacher to ask?

yea it’s definitely author bios. and the specification about birth and death dates is exactly how chocoholic explained: go beyond the superficial.

we’ve been out of school for 11 days now.
all contact with the teacher is pretty much shot.

i guess i’m going to have to skip that part until i’ve finished the book anyway, but i think i’m assuming it’s the authors.

it’s just not very clear, so it didn’t hurt to ask

I think the instructions are simply trying to tell you that precise birth and death dates aren’t very important if you are writing a one-paragraph biography. It’s important to know roughly when Faulkner, Clemens, and Barry were (are) writing, but irrelevant to know what their birthdays are.

It wouldn’t hurt to call your school office (it’s almost certainly open all summer) and ask whether there is someone whom you can call or e-mail to clarify the instructions on the summer work. It’s possible that some of the faculty, especially the department chairs, may be working during the summer.
