My parents didn’t have the money to help me. So I borrowed a little from my brother at 9% interest (the going rate at the time). Some people find this appalling, but the way I see it, as adults, we are not entitled to other people’s money - even if they are family.

Having said that, I think that many parents want to help their children if they can do so without bankrupting themselves or putting their retirement in danger. And if I didn’t “need” it, no I wouldn’t expect them to pay me back. At the same time, that same brother that charged me 9%, also used his income to pay off the remainder of our parent’s home mortgage in their old age. Responsibility, care and concern go both ways.

I’m sure that you will find ways to care for your parents and show your gratitude for their help.
