Parents divorce and reporting income?

friend’s parents are in the process of divorcing but he is a junior

he will be in custody of his mother who works as a real estate agent

there is no reliable income amount for this job

he said that her first year she made 10k but this year she made 30k

he has the number for his parents combined as 250k

what should he report? will reported only the mother give him extra fa?

Depends on if the school uses FAFSA only (custodial parent income only) or its own method including non-custodial parent income. Most schools with better financial aid do the latter. If he is a California resident, he is in luck, since the public universities there give good in-state financial aid based on FAFSA only.

if the father is making THAT much money then likely he’s paying substantial child support (for all children) AND spousal support. If so, that money will be reported on FAFSA by the mother.

It’s just not likely that the courts would expect the mom to live on just that low amount (with a child/children) while the dad earns over $200k.
