Parents don't approve of my college because it's dangerous...

Don’t say that out loud before even the nicest “Black, Mexican, and Arab” comes at you.

By the way, almost every nice college in the country is located in the “ghetto”. The college often generates revenue for the town/city. Harvard is a perfect example, especially since it’s an urban campus.

Took an unofficial tour there at night with an alumni from my school, and never have I seen so many homeless people before surrounding the Harvard Square. I’m from NYC, and a LOT of the top schools here are surrounded by “ghetto” areas. Look at Columbia (also an urban campus), is not far from Harlem. Harlem, to many, is a “ghetto”.

Even in the suburban and rural areas, the towns surrounding those schools can be sometimes run-down or filled with racism towards the minorities. points finger at your parents

As for the “Blacks, Mexicans, and Arabs” bit, I’m Black, and if the amount of dirty looks my group (all Black, including the alumni, with the exception of a Hispanic girl and our two White teachers) and I got from the White students at Harvard scared me, I would have never chosen the colleges I applied to (60%+ White).

My message to your parents: -____________-

I didn’t say that, calm down. I LIVE IN TEXAS. It’s all black people and Mexicans. Did I say I had anything wrong with them? NO. My parents did. Some of my bestfriends are Mexican. It even says in the actual ****ing post that “My parents…”

It’s taser.

Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using CC App

You need to re-read my post. I said MY PARENTS. Damn, how stupid are people on here? I never said that I had anything against other races.

No, white people can kill too. But if you lived in Texas and you looked at the people that were arrested, and on Death Toll, you’d see that all the people on there are from downtown Houston and are black/Mexican. That’s where the statistics come from.

OP-- maybe you shouldn’t suggest carrying a taser, implying you share the same views as your parents, and even after derrogatory comments you should reaffirm that you’re only quoting your parents (IF you are).

I live on the boarder too, you idiot. I said DOWNTOWN HOUSTON. Are you saying that living in a small town is the same as living in a huge city where drug dealers make their deals and people get mugged?

You have some research to do.

@CPUscientist3000

I’m getting tired of saying this. I have NOTHING against other races. I would be carrying a taser to PROTECT MYSELF FROM MUGGERS. I didn’t saying “protect myself from blacks, mexicans, and arabs.” did I?

NO.

Rofl. Even if that’s true, that doesn’t mean you’re automatically not a racist, “you idiot”.

OP, don’t get your panties in a bunch.

^^she just said “if you are”. She is allowing you room for the benefit of the doubt. Don’t insult people based on the info you gave us.
If we are all so stupid, then do not ask us questions.

If you have a point to prove, prove it with statistics.

tigresss- maybe the people being arrested are majorly black/mexican because as you said… they dominate the population??? lololol

idiot? yeah…

I didn’t give any information that said I was racist and hated blacks, Arabs, and Mexicans. Since when does saying “My parents” say “Me”? I’d really like to know.

They do dominate the population. Houston is mostly blacks and Mexicans. A yankee wouldn’t know that.

The university of Houston had 22 violent crimes, 451 property crimes and 411 thefts in 2009 and it got a D+ in safety here: [University of Houston - Safety & Crime Report | American School Search](http://www.american-school-search.com/safety/university-of-houston)

But an article written in 2009 said that they were improving security and stuff because:
"Administrators at the University of Houston don’t often talk about one hurdle they face in recruiting students.

But after several robberies and the fatal shooting of a homeless man on campus this spring, the school is tackling both the reality of crime and the perception of danger in the surrounding neighborhood."

The article also said that: '“It’s hard to compare one school with another because crime is affected by so many factors. UH, for example, is in an economically disadvantaged urban neighborhood, with most students commuting to campus. Texas Tech University is on the west side of Lubbock, a midsize city in the Panhandle, and students are more than twice as likely to live on campus.”
So you can’t really compare Ivies with U of H

[UH tackles perception, reality of crime rate on campus | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle](http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6470044.html)

Oh my gosh, you guys calm down.

Anyway, tigresss, you don’t really have anything to be worried about unless you can find real data showing how many students get mugged or hurt on a regular basis. EDIT: ^ there it is. Nevermind…

Anyway, I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out that you shouldn’t walk to places alone at night, and stuff and stuff. I don’t really know what else people can do to protect themselves…

almost there

just posted a comment about real account incidents. There’s reason that my parents are afraid. They’re afraid of me being “the white girl” and standing out, making me more of a target. Non-city slickers are seen as easy to mug.

A Pacific-Islander told me that she was afraid to get a University in the mainland that was mostly all whites. She was intimiated. That’s the same way my parents feel. I’m not offended, it has nothing to do with that. It’s just standing out and all of the crime.

“yankee” i’m from AL…

and on that note, adios. i hope you do well and prosper in college.

Hi Tigressgold~
Maybe your words you posted didn’t reflect what you feel…I am not sure…I will approach your inquiry this way…
The bottom line is how you feel when you walk around the campus. Those who live in more urban environs may not have the same response that someone else who does not. A lot of your experience in college will depend on your experiences-and expectations. My daughter grew up in an urban environ, was a minority in her public high school-and was white, blond and blue eyed. She would have no issues, nor would she feel a need for tazers.
IF YOU feel you need a tazer, then you know it may not be a good match for you. IF you don’t, then the decision to attend may come down to A/YOU… B/your family’s financial input…C/your family’s opinion/expectations and D/YOU
I hope this helps-

Yeah the thing is though the majority of colleges aren’t in nice areas (although there are a few but they’re usually a lot more expensive like SMU is in a very nice area but it costs way more) they’re typically in areas where people are going to be ok with living near a bunch of college kids and people with money (i.e. people that are less likely to commit crimes) typically don’t want to live near a bunch of college kids who are getting drunk and partying all the time.

Thank you, that’s very kind of you :)
