Hi, my parents don’t think I should bother applying to Northwestern RD because they think I have no chance of getting in. However I did surprise them by getting accepted into Boston College and University of Michigan which I am really excited about… But I really want to apply to northwestern! So if anybody has any thoughts about if I had any shot at all, it would be great thanks.

-I’m taking 5 AP’s senior year and doing really well…all A’s.
-I’m white male from a public high school in NY.
-Extracurriculars are Average…some clubs/volunteer activities, track, 1 summer job
-Recommendations are Very good.
-I realize though that I would not send in any SAT II’s which would hurt my chances…

Based on that quick set of stats/info, responses would be appreciated thank you!

I think you should apply for sure…I mean it’s only a small application fee and a supplement. You have a good ACT and decent gpa/rank. What would be the harm in applying?

Depends on the school in NY. Your low AP’s send a pretty bad signal, especially a 3 on the absolutely atrociously easy English Language AP (you’re not even minority with a different first language!)

If we’re talking Horace Greeley or Scarsdale HS, then yes, I’d say you’re in good shape. If we’re talking some average HS in rockland county or-god help you- long island, you’re boned.

Definitely apply. No matter the strength of your HS, you’re still in the top 6% and that counts for something. Coupled with a 33, you are within range.

thanks guys. i guess there would be no harm in applying. do you think since I am not sending in SAT II’s that it would really hurt my shot? Because the site says it recommends 2 subject tests

NY: some schools accept the ACT in lieu of the 2 subject tests so you may be ok…I can’t recall if NU is one of the schools…

you have been accepted to two excellent schools; congrats!! I don’t see what harm there could be in applying to NU, but I would caution that if you really don’t have a feel for where you would be a “fit”, you should figure that out before April…May 1st comes on real fast…

Just adding a more so-called “prestigious” school is not going to answer that question…

Yeah I mean I wouldn’t say you don’t have a shot, but there’s nothing there that is super convincing. yeah you have a solid ACT score and weighted GPA, but your AP’s are sub-par (granted I only got 4’s in those back in the day, but I had other scores to back that up).

I would say you should apply if you really want to go, but again, there aren’t too many convincing parts of your application, especially with little EC’s to compensate.
