Parents in PHL or near UPenn

Our student will be in PHL for 6-8 weeks this summer, staying in the UPenn dorms.
The forms require us to include a preferred hospital, dentist and MD in case of emergancy/illness.

Advice?
Feel free to pm me if you prefer not to post here.
Thanks.

Preferred hospital should definitely be HUP: [Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania](http://www.pennmedicine.org/hup/). It’s right near campus and is a superb teaching hospital.

It is a superb teaching hospital with long lines. I took my daughter for a simple procedure. We survived the long line. We survived a wrong prescription for a procedure. We endured their losing of the test result for two months. I have no doubt that it is a superb hospital with cutting edge knowledge. If you suspect that your case requires simple knowledge, it may not be a place for you. On the other hand, your son will be right there.

^^^ YIKES!

No chronic conditions–its about having options if there is an issue–

Our student would have the UPenn student medical center available…and I guess they want to have all of the basis covered…

HUP is closest and would be where to go in an emergency.

Definitely HUP. Don’t know any specific doctors or dentists.

HUP-that’s your choice. Just pick a HUP physician and put it on the form. The ER is an incredible pain. WildChild went several times (not serious, but sent there by student health for things they couldn’t handle (post knee surgery issue etc). He checked in, waited and waited (it became my personal fault), left to go to class, came back and he was STILL on the wait list. Not good. I think the 2nd time he figured out to say that he felt dizzy and he got right in.

If your basic needs are covered, I am sure HUP takes good care of those with grave illness. Our case was a basic routine that needed a specialist. It took three tries to get the right prescription. Lucky for us, what was written on the prescription was so obviously wrong. I usually don’t expect to understand a presciption.

Is this a Level 1 Trauma Center? If it is, I’d find another ER for less traumatic needs, or an Urgent Care center. Level 1 Trauma Centers are going to get a lot of folks by ambulance in really serious condition, and that’s always going to push the post-surgical knee infection kinds of things way to the back burner.

You might want to look at the In Loco Parentis thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/344820-loco-parentis-do-you-live-near-college.html</a> for additional parental resources.

^^ These stories make this “top reasearch hospital” seem not so “top”

-a wrong prescription! Thats a BIG deal.

-waiting–having to go to class–and then STILL be waiting? for a post surgical infection issue…What if it was MRSA and blood poisoning…How long would it take to get the IV you need?

I would hope for things that are minor–there is either the student center or a walk-in urgent care…and the hospital is for something grave…

Is CHOP a better choice?

Don’t you have to be a “C” for CHOP? (Children) I’m seriously asking. CHOP is awesome, but I suspect you would be sent over to the HUP ER.

^^hummm
I guess I was thinking under 18 makes one a C/minor…
good thought though…

ok–gotta laugh at myself for this–as looking at our dear student–who does not resemble a C…

oh well I guess this speaks volumes as to our family being ready to see our student leave a yr from now…
