Had a chance to talk to several parents of kids who recently graduated from film school. The stories vary, and several of the graduates are living at home and doing whatever it takes to earn money while they pursue their film career. Any stories from you?

btw: I am in Colorado and am under a “pre-evacuation” order for my home (we have moved some critical items away from our house). We are in the current path of the Waldo Canyon fire, but it has slowed considerably because the winds are calmer today. Let’s hope they get that under control. We also own a condo that we rent out. It is in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood in Colorado Springs. I saw a photo of it taken Tuesday night with all of the houses around it in flames. I thought for sure that we had lost it, but my address was not on the list of 347 burned houses. I’m waiting to see for myself. My tenant told a frightening tale of how rapidly the flames swept over the mountain and down into the neighborhood. The police/FD had let the occupants in for a short time to retrieve items, but that was probably not a great decision.*

Dig, I will keep you and your family in my thoughts, as well as the firefighters and all those affected by the fires. I have a friend who lives in the Waldo Canyon area (Hollandale Drive) who was evacuated two days ago as the flames were within sight. As of this morning her home had been spared, so hopefully the good news will continue. She said that the fire was only 15% under control, so it sounds like there is a long way to go. She only had minutes to evacuate, so just got the kids and the pets in the car and left. What a tragedy for all those who have lost their homes. The fire situation is on the news every night; are firefighters from around the country coming to help? I haven’t heard any mention of that but can’t imagine the local emergency personnel being able to handle this on their own, day after day. Keep us posted, and again, I’m glad you are safe and that your home is OK.

Good luck will keep fingers crossed for you

Update: Fire is 45% contained and they lifted the pre-evac order on my home. Everything still smells like smoke here though. On the condo, it was scorched a little on the outside and even though the doors and windows were closed, ash found its way in. The smoke has permeated everything… not sure what getting rid of that will involve. In addition, the utility infrastructure literally melted, so my tenant will be out for some time.

OTOH: I was in WV Friday when the most violent storm I’ve ever been in the middle of hit with a violence that was scary, scary, scary. I thought I was in a tornado. The town of Lewisburg was a mess afterwards - roads blocked, trees down, power lines down, and power out (probably for some time).

OK, back to topic: I’m not sure how many “graduate” film parents are still on this forum, but if there are any, share stories. Two of the parents I talked to had kids who are still interested in making films, but the fill-in jobs they took really interested them and they seem to be going in a different direction now.

Of course that happens to many college grads - they actually end up in a career other than the one they thought they would have in film.

Here’s the Chapman link to where the Dodge College alumni are working. Hope this helps. [Where Are They Now | Chapman University](<a href=“Page Not Found | Chapman University”>Page Not Found | Chapman University)
