Parents of HS Class of 2024 3.0-3.4 GPA

This is my favorite thread on CC. S24 does not fit in the GPA range, but we learned a lot from the wonderful parents on this thread and it really helped us to look at college applications in a completely different way. When the griping and complaining on the other threads gets too much, I come here for my moment of Zen.

What I love about this thread is that every kid “belongs” in this thread. It is also amazing to see how well the kids here do with acceptances and merit.

this thread has been a really nice respite and a breath of fresh air from the usual CC “omg if my kid doesn’t get into a top 20 school, they’re doomed” sort of insanity.

I started a thread for us class of 2025 parents of 3.0-3.4 (or less) kids too.

I hope I am replying to the bottom of the thread. Going back to read. D24 is a UW 3.4 to 3.5 student in public high school applying to BFA and Acting schools all over. No top tier, surprisingly most mid west. We are in Az . So happy to have found this thread.

Ok I read back to June, congrats to so many of the class of 24 for great acceptances .

Since a BFA program is challenging to get into my D24 applied originally to 15 schools. Some you have to be academically excepted into first some artistically first. Some have prescreens where they look at your monologues dance and songs and decide if you are able to audition…

2 have been crossed off the list ,Cal State Chico and Southern Utah. She was excepted academically into both of them, but decided that neither was really where she wanted to go

She was accepted into the BA program at ASU with a 3k scholarship. Has no desire to go , feels it would be a continuation of high school. (Very true)

She has been both academically and artistically excepted with a BFA in acting with a musical theater concentration to Arcadia University in Pennsylvania with a 24,000 merit scholarship per year as well as an $8000 theater scholarship. Too bad the tuition is around 47k

She is still waiting to hear from the University of Tampa, which she applied early action and now apparently it’s going to come out sometime in February. She has been academically excepted to Colorado state, Colorado Mesa as well as Lindenwood University. Is just waiting for the results of the online audition. She is waiting to hear both academically and artistically from CU Boulder.

So if you’re still reading lol that leaves six schools. We are traveling to the Chicago national unified auditions, so she can audition in person for Butler University, Depaul University, Drake University, Millikin University, Otterbein, University, and the University of Oklahoma. She has been academically excepted to Butler, Drake, Millikin. I initially was opposed to going to Chicago for so many auditions, but it is definitely cheaper than flying all over.

She decided not to go and visit any school that she was not admitted to because she felt like that would get her hopes up. We have decided after the outcome of the auditions to travel to see her top three. She will be able to see into the Depaul campus in Chicago.

I am really glad that I found this thread and thank you all for reading.

We are going to visit DePaul during spring break. Very excited to see the school in person.

Good luck to your D for all of her auditions!!

We are leaving our house at 3:30 am tomorrow for a 5:30 am flight to KY so we can visit Centre College on Monday for D24’s music scholarship audition. And I am pooped. Have been running around since 6:30 am. Kid #2 had mock trial event today, had to be dropped off at 8 am, picked up at 2 pm. Kid #1 had choir day camp 11:30-3:30 today. Then she wanted me to go w/her to craft store to get a ribbon for her hair for winter formal dance tonight.

Then had to go to ATM for cash for dance ticket. But ATM machine was broken so had to go to different location farther away from home.

Meanwhile, I also did a million loads of laundry, watered all my plants outside, wrote a list of instructions for my sister (who’s staying at our house w/Kid #2 while we are away Sun-Tues).

Kid #1 still has to pack her bag for tomorrow. So does DH. I have some worky work stuff to do on the computer before we leave and I don’t think I’m going to have time for that, so it’ll have to wait for the hotel room on Sunday night instead.

At least the weather is clear in KY and Dallas (we’re changing planes) for the next 3 days! No snow. No ice.

Kid #1 is going to wear her choir dress for the audition, which choir director said was fine. Voice instructor (different person) said to wear a jewel-toned “Easter Sunday” dress instead. Not happening. D24 doesn’t have anything like that in her wardrobe and I don’t have time or money right now to go make that happen. Besides, KY generally speaking in terms of culture, I think, is perhaps a little more conservative than AZ (where people go to church in shorts and flip flops), so we are going to stick with the choir dress since it doesn’t cost us any extra anyway.

…besides, before my kid heads off to college, she’s going to need a business suit/interview outfit and that will trump an Easter Sunday type of dress.

6 more hours before I have to wake up and I have an hour’s worth of stuff still to do! Eek!

This craziness won’t last forever though. Come August, it’ll be a lot quieter at our house.

Can’t wait to hear all about what she thinks. I know you mentioned earlier she initially poo-pooed the idea of KY (as did your DH). Maybe she will totally love it and so will he! Keep us posted and safe travels.

My S23 3.3 gpa kid applied as a music major so I totally understand the additional stress. Good luck to her!

Arrived here safe and sound. 1.5 hr drive from Louisville airport so if either of my kids attend college at Centre, I’d probably fly them out of the Lexington airport since it’s about an hour away.

Ate dinner yesterday at a Mexican restaurant that’s walking distance to Centre. Food was really good for KY. :joy: We are picky about Mexican food. D24 liked it. Our server was born in El Salvador but has a southern accent. That was a trip. Restaurant was a family-run business…which makes me happy because I like supporting family run places. Server said that the place is packed on Fri and Sat nights with Centre students.

She’s already declared that she’s not going here because it’s too cold. Honestly, the weather hasn’t been all that bad.

Drove through the small downtown last night. It’s adorable. Baskin & Robbins is right next door to campus. All the trees downtown have string lights on them. It’s really lovely. Like Main Street USA at Disneyland. Really picturesque.

This is one of my favorite forums after going through the craziness of other CC threads filled with students / parents with 3.9+ GPAs / 1500+ SAT scores agonizing over college admissions. S24 (3.32UW / 3.5W / 1270 SAT superscore) got into U of Minnesota - Twin Cities for pre-Engg last week. He is really excited about this as Minnesota is well known for its Engg. programs. He has other good admits (USF, UCF, Stony Brook, Binghamton) as well as a few deferrals, so Sem 1 grades are going to be crucial for him (as we keep on reminding him). We are planning campus visits now to find the best fit.

Ate a late breakfast at a cafe attached to the Centre campus bookstore, which is in downtown Danville. Drove through campus after….lots of traditional brick buildings. I think the campus is pretty but I’m not the decision maker. :slightly_smiling_face: Bought a scarf at the campus bookstore since D24 forgot to pack one and she’s cold.

Congrats to your son @nj04 on all the acceptances so far! Looking forward to hearing how the campus visits go!

Hey, now she’s got some university swag if she changes her mind about Centre!

My D24 received her first phone call congratulating her on being accepted to their p schools BFA MT program . She was pretty excited. It’s not the top of her list, it’s a smaller school in Colorado, but she was pretty happy to receive the phone call and a place in their program.

Congrats!!! He has some great choices. IMO this GPA/SAT combo is pretty common for boys and has no relation to how driven they will be later in life.

My MIL (3 boys, 2 were twins) said she lived in fear of her phone for years - “one of your boys…”- what one didn’t think of the other did. Now one son’s managing Billions of $ in risk on Wall St, another is a Dr, and the 3rd is a licensed electrician.

Thanks! So far his college decisions are going better than expected. He only has 3 denials so far. In-state Rutgers waitlisted him, so it will be an OOS college for us. Everytime he gets a deferral, we are relieved as it means he’s still got a shot! Looks like both of us are stalking the TAMU thread waiting for some news to emerge :slightly_smiling_face:

Centre College visit today went well. Will post big long report on the “which colleges moved up or down and why” post tomorrow after we get home. Music audition went well. D24 said she messed up in 2 parts but didn’t show it. Music professor gave her a tour of the performing arts center…it’s an awesome facility. I think she has a decent shot at getting some scholarship money out of this but she did say that Austin College and Southwestern are still higher on the list.

D24 has been in charge of us picking where to eat the entire trip. We’ve had pretty decent Mexican food and Japanese food, too. Centre College is an awesome community. Even if D24 decides not to attend here, I do think that this school will be a good option for D26…they have a good history program (D24’s favorite subject).

Southwestern just announced this:

It definitely moves Southwestern up a bit for D24. $3000 paid summer internship in healthcare? Dang.
