Funny I have someone set to Ignore so I wasn’t up to 10,000 comments

What’s weird is my count says there were 10,093 posts

I see the same but last night when we saw it was close to 10,000 and I don’t think there were 100 messages since then. Not sure where the 10093 comes from.

Great question and one I’ve wondered about as the parent of an lgbtq child applying to schools where lgbtq students are probably over represented (relative to the general population). My assumption has been that it is not a decisive admissions factor or anything approximating a hook but that being lgbtq–or more precisely, speaking thoughtfully in an essay about lgbtq identity–might marginally help make a case about “fit.”

I will note that Amherst asks directly whether applicants identify as lgbtq and specifically what they identify as (e.g., cis gay man). My kid was surprised by the specificity and directness of the question but was happy to answer. No idea how they use that information.

Coming out of COVID lockdown this weekend, my mission is to figure out a favorite cocktail or two to make with the saffron amaro I got for Christmas. It is very interesting but I have not loved it in anything so far I have done with whiskeys. So I am going to branch out into gins and rums, maybe even pisco, and play around with citrus.

Truly critical will then be coming up with a college-admissions-themed name. I’ve already used The Deferred (and still love that cocktail, it is now in heavy rotation). Likely Letter would be a fantastic cocktail name, but feels like tempting fate. So maybe I will try rolling it (that is when you pour a cocktail back and forth between two shakers versus shaking it), and then call it a Rolling Admissions . . . .

We wouldn’t even buy a t-shirt at tours as to not tempt fate, so understand the trepidation on likely letter.

You could consider a companion cocktail to The Deferred called the LOCI or libation of continued interest.

Being LGBTQ+ is definitely considered for audition based programs, since there is interest in increasing diversity. I do not think that schools care about it otherwise, except for historically women’s schools who have policies both for trans men and trans women.

I was wondering why I still lurk around here sometimes since we are done.
It is for content like THIS.

This came up leading into ED decisions. I was stunned at how many parents had t-shirts and other swag ready to give as a holiday gift “just in case,” and otherwise ready to return it.

That’s a hard no/jinx for me!

So how many were you up to when it closed?

You can see this right?

Well now it seems to have switched, to 10093, as others have it! But it was about 9973 or something.

Ohhhhh, that made me realize something. D24 lives in hoodies, wears them year round, so she wanted one from every place we visited if possible.

Out of the first 4 places she got apparel, she didn’t even end up applying to 3, and was rejected from the 4th! Thankfully VT broke the streak with a hoodie and an acceptance.

Same here. Started buying gear and then didn’t even end up applying.

The hoodie jinx continues: we only bought two sweatshirts (although we visited far more). The nicest hoodie belongs to the school that waitlisted her–even though that school is (or was, at least) no more competitive than several of her acceptances. Good thing she was too afraid of the jinx to buy stuff for her reaches! :grinning:

D24 also finished Unifieds. Was a good experience overall. Already heard a decision from one which unfortunately was a no. So 4th choice is now moved up . Top 2 still stand. No merch has been purchased and we will tour top 3 .

I was a hard NO on that as well - and rightly so as things turned out.

I thought that conventional wisdom was that LGBTQIA+ wasn’t a hook?

Schools do get a reputation for being queer friendly, and this could lead to a higher proportion of students applying (in-state NC, I would say UNC Asheville and UNC Greenboro, aka UNC Gaysboro by some of the cheekier theater kids). I could see how schools might want to know so that they can advertise gender neutral housing or bathrooms or whatever inclusive type programs/accommodations they have for the students who might utilize it.

All my kids got swag at the schools they thought had good swag whether or not they planned to apply. Very little meaning attached to the swag beyond aesthetics.
