Parents of NEW Appointee's

Soon enough, many parents of 2011 Appointees will be looking for advice from current Academy parents. I remember how I checked this forum many times a day only 12 months ago!

I want to share our family’s experience. I realize each family has different financial means and we all comes from different walks of life. That is what makes this country so great! Once your child has signed their committment letter, you become part of a WONDERFUL NEW FAMILY.

We knew that we had only three weeks between HS graduation and BCT to squeeze in one last Family Vacation. Our oldest would leave home June 28th, 2006. Our younger children were 16 and 13 1/2. My husband and I wanted to plan a memorable trip that all three children would enjoy. The five of us went on a 7 night cruise, returning only three days before BCT. The timing of our trip worked out well. Our son had two exciting weeks with his high school friends. Our vacation kept our son’s mind and body busy enjoying places he has never seen. Upon our return home, our son had just enough down time to spend with his closest friends.

Our son decided to travel to BCT without us. This is a very personal decision. There is no right or wrong way to handle it. Listen to your own child. They may want you there, they may not. Don’t assume you know what is best for them. Just love them and support them. They are heading into the unkown. Congratulations! and Welcome to the Family!!!

And fasten your seatbelts, please keep your hands and feet in the car… The roller coaster ride begins…

Good Luck and congratulations. Welcome.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Our heads are still spinning!
