Parents of the class of "its complicated"

DD graduated from HS a few weeks ago.

She would be class of 2014 in college. Except she is enrolling in a 5 year B Arch program. So 2015. And she is taking a gap year overseas. So 2016. She says she will still be considered 2015 at RPI, cause the Archies are supposed to be done with everything but their big fifth year project by then, if I understand her right.

This thread is for all the other parents for whom “its complicated” is the best answer for graduation year.

It’s hard to really know the grad year up front anyway since the student might switch majors a time or two, decide to take a difficult minor, decide to do a study abroad that might extend the time somewhat, might have difficulties getting into some desired classes at the right timeframe, need to work a job and therefore take a lighter load, get sick enough to impact a semester, and might even end up taking a course over again. All of this can add to the time required to graduate so the 4 years might really end up being 4.5, 5, or ???

So, even though many universities publish their graduation calendar four years in advance (gee, does this mean we’d better book hotel rooms that much in advance?) it’s not always an uncluttered path towards graduation.

I surprised my parents the other direction and got my BA in three years, thanks to taking each classes and getting credit in my major (poli sci) for my summer internship in DC, after I did a write up of it. This was back in the days when tutition for a quarter’s worth of classes was less than what the quarter’s worth of books goes for now.

Well, congratulations to your DD just starting out, but in the big picture, it will become less complicated, and you will find it doesn’t really matter. (Unless Alec Baldwin/Steve Martin*/Merrill Streep are somehow involved). My D had 1/2 year credit from AP’s, going in, but went co-op and study abroad, making graduation in 5 years. The only complications were the great blog - with pictures- from her time at Edinburgh, and an extra graduation lunch with her co-op class.

And waht’s up with Steve Martin playing architects in movies?

I think this is why the parents of 2010 hs grads named their new thread “2014 and beyond”.

I finished my 5 yr BArch in 1980 and have always listed that as my grad year. But DH, who went through the exact same program side-by-side has his grad year as 1979. 30 years later, I guess it makes me appear younger  . DH and I always receive mailings and reunion info for both 1979 (our college entry class) and 1980 (our actual grad class). i think we were given the opportunity to choose how we wanted to be considered.

Correct!
