Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

chintzy, that’s wonderful. What a great moment for you, and a positive piece to hold onto as the countdown continues.

HMW–I should bookmark this page to reread after a marathon shopping trip, a sweaty move-in day, or a whiny phone call.

For most people, the only difference between default settings and what you have is the security set up on it and the name you give your router. So if you reset and turn security on, you should be back to the non-default setting you had.

Thanks everyone. I had absolutely nothing to do with setting up the router in the first place, so it seems ridiculous for me to work on it now. However, if I’m the only one who will…(spoken like a mother…)

It’s after 5 p.m. here. I think this thread is in dire need of some margarita mix.

Or perhaps it’s just me.

I like the way you think, HMW. Missypie: first the margarita, THEN the router.

I’m entertaining my father and old friends of his for dinner tonight - good china and all. Kind of a big deal. Dad just arrived 2 hours early and wants to chat. Ack! I still have food to prepare, some cleaning to do, etc. I’m going to pour myself that margarita first ;)

Just bought the one (!!!) textbook S will need the first term. Yikes, the campus bookstore wanted to make some serious money on it, but I was able to find a new copy elsewhere for less than half the bookstore’s cost.

Anybody with a computer science kid should check out today’s Woot t-shirt:
[Woot Shirt : One Shirt, No Shoes, No Service (SM)](http://shirt.woot.com/)

Cheers, PRJ. That’s a very ambitious dinner. I hope it turns out to be fun, too.

fireflyscout, I love that shirt.

chintzy–that is a great moment! Perhaps a margarita just to celebrate it? DD walked out of her registration a month ago with that excitement. It will be one of those small moments I long remember.

FYI Shoppers–Kohl’s is having a very good sale on bedding, towels, etc. Lots of buy one get one free, 50% or more off kind of things. I picked up a couple of new pillows and a set of jersey sheets for D. Go online! That was after the 2 hour trip to the “superstore” to buy all the other odds and ends. Lots of the plastic summer type dishes were on clearance. I picked up some cereal bowls, plastic cups, a big popcorn type bowl, and plates for less than $5.00. If DD losses them I won’t care. That’s kind of my motto with a lot of the things I’m buying. I could not find a laptop lock or poster putty. Looks like I’ll be making a trip to Staples next week as I know they have both.

D’s initial exposure to college is NOT going well.

First she didn’t get the classes that she wanted. I know that that is typical for a freshman. She was able to get other classes that she sort of thinks she’ll like but not sure.

One of the reasons that she chose this college was the coach. She started running again after taking off 6 weeks to rest her knee that the HS trainer diagnosed as tendinitis. Knee was still hurting so we sent her to a specialist. Never was tendinitis. Another problem that is requiring physical therapy and she may not be ready to join the team on time. She’s working as hard as the PT will allow and trying everything she can but is really down and she hasn’t even started school yet. I just hate to see her so upset. She’s grouchy and getting on H’s nerves. I think he needs to just cut her some slack. Her plans are falling apart and she just needs some time to adjust. She emailed the coach and let her know. Now she needs to have the PT send everything to the trainer at the school and have the specialist release her to be able to start running with the team. One more hurdle to over come I guess.

Oh, RochesterMom, this sounds like a disappointing and anxious time for your D.

Its also the roller coaster of these days. Here we have what I think of (even tho we are on the Left Coast) as midwestern weather. It can be completely sunny mood wise and then a storm brews over the smallest thing. Then it is gone. Both internal and external forces at work in all this and we (ack!) are not in charge of any of them any more. I’m missing the days when a balloon fixed everything.

Meanwhile, just for distraction: Went to the local science museum where they had a Staff Picks of favorite exhibits. One was “what you find in the stomach of a Leopard Shark. The display included a license plate, a running shoe, and 2 Barbies–which did not look all that worse for wear!” I wish my hair and shape held up like that…On the other hand, my feet are not molded for high heels, thank god.

Hang in there everyone.
(PS: Shark was fine with the above on board apparently and its demise was related to other causes…)

RochesterMom, do we have the same D?! Mine also has the knee thing - turns out it’s not going to go away with PT. She won’t be joining a team anytime soon. Didn’t get the classes she hoped for, has had numerous schedule changes already, may need one more…very grouchy, but then she’s never that great with change. She’s been away for 10 days, it’s been nice. As much as I miss her, I needed a break from walking on eggshells! Hopefully the schedule thing will be handled via email and all set when she returns on Tuesday.

Anyway, my hope is that all these kids with rough starts are just getting it out of the way early:)

I think my S has me in training for the fall of '10. I don’t see him in the AM, since he gets up later than I do for his work. He gets home before I do, frequently borrowing a car to do something with friends for the evening and sometimes gets home after I am asleep. Guess we’d better touch base this weekend! At least H knows more of what’s going on since they carpool to campus and eat lunch together frequently. Huh, Mom now feels like the outsider. :(

RochesterMom/sk8rmom,
Another mom of college class of '13 here who had child’s knee issues misdiagnosed. If your athlete happens to have a patellar maltracking issue, let me know. Found a great kneebrace that pulled kneecap into proper alignment for running while waiting for physical therapy to strengthen muscles. I don’t know what is worse. Being the injured athlete or the injured athlete’s mother. You just really feel for the kids…

rochesterMom and sk8mom— I hope this is as bad as it gets for your Ds. It can only get better right???

Computer issues taken care of…took 5 hours on the phone and $29.99 but it’s done. Son and husband did it and I was only around for emergency assistance (run get the power cord - battery is low). They did fine getting hooked up to the internet - but then it was unsecured. Son found an online help that was working great, until there was a break in the link for further instructions…that’s when he had to go to work and we paid the $29.99…all was fine until Tech Suppport asked it we wanted to be able to print from the two laptops…Sure-might as well get our moneys’ worth…took three different tech support persons on a couple of continents and about two hours, but it’s done. I am amazed that y’all know how to do all that yourselves.

So sorry to hear about the injuries. My nephew is a good athelete who has been concentrating on the golf team…broke his wrist a while ago in a pick up basketball game, and it’s still so out of control that he fears he won’t make the golf team his senior year.

I had a margarita flavored wine cooler during the computer hook-up. That will have to count.

Congrats on the fix, missypie. Sometimes it just takes a mom’s determination to get to the heart of the matter!

You hit the nail on the head, MiniVan - couple of misdiagnoses and the latest ortho (who came highly recommended for sports injuries and makes more sense than the other) said D’s kneecaps are tilted inward and she’s been through 3 rounds of PT, max visits, over the last 2 years with no long term gains. After 3 years of agony she finally gave up skating a few months ago, even though her college has a competitive team that would welcome her. She says she doesn’t mind and needs to concentrate on her studies anyway but I do feel bad for her as this was her only sport. Also concerned that the campus is very large, lots of stairs, and she’s had trouble on visit days due to the walking and the pain last for several days. She wears a brace and PT had been taping her worst kneecap in place, but your brace sounds like a better idea! I’ll send you a PM with my email addy. Is there any hope for a long-term fix, short of surgery? Her ortho says surgery is optional but otherwise she likely live with the pain (many OTC meds not an option due to another health condition). She doesn’t want surgery.

Way to go, missypie.

RochesterMom and sk8rmom, the knee problems are scary. I hope things get more comfortable, and less anxious, for your girls.

mmaah, I loved the shark story. And yes, it would be wonderful if balloons could still fix things.

I’m watching old Rocky & Bullwinkle shows with my 7 yo this morning. It’s pretty therapeutic.

I guess I’m starting the “empty nest” thing a few weeks earlier than planned. Dropped S off in NH yesterday for his Kitchen Crew job, which will last until a couple days before he’s due at school. (I’m laughing at the thought of him rolling out of bed at 5:30 every morning!!) I’ll be sitting right here for the next several days, after the marathon of driving! Got home much later than planned last night – definitely could have used a margarita when I finally arrived, but, alas, no mix; settled for ice cream instead.

S discovered there is a newly resurrected water polo club at his school – playing will meet his PE requirement.
