Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Dizzi-son is exactly like missypie’s. Except he has one more week of work at camp so he is getting up at 8 but comes home at 1:00 and goes to sleep until it’s time to go out w/ friends… S was playing w/ new laptop at 2:00am this morning. I insisted he go to sleep… Missy: guess we could always make obnoxious calls to them at 3:00am and embarrass them in front of roommates - that should shape them up! HaHaHa :D

Dizzimom - I had to laugh at “playing with new laptop”! That is my S exactly - new Mac last week and it is the new favorite toy. And no packing, no organizing, no chatting with roommates - with less than four weeks to go. At least he is gainfully employed. Any free time is spent with girlfriend and friends - we get a few hours here and there. Since kids’ evenings are usually booked with work or socializing, we are trying to have family lunches (with H and S2) out at favorite local places. It is such a comfort reading this thread, knowing others are in the same boat. I must confess I read about the shopping trips with daughters with no small amount of envy!

I made Son go to WalMart with me Saturday morning. (Perhaps the biggest accomplishment was getting him out of bed by 10 am.) It was funny to see his reaction when given the option to choose his own shampoo, soap, etc. I know that my Ds are very particular about their hair products, but Son uses whatever is in the bathroom at the time. Interesting to see him choose certain brands for some things and the least expensive for others.

"How are you holding up? "

I am a little queasy thinking of her leaving so soon. She is my “slow to warm” kid and doesn’t usually transition well so I am on pins and needles. I know there will be a breakdown at some point in the next three days. She is in denial at this point with the no shopping and packing attitude. I have all of her bedding and her share of the apartment items ready to go but nothing of her personal items are ready. She is excited but nervous about the sports part. Once she gets through the next month with that she will be ready for the academic part after Labor Day. I will have my breakdown the following weekend when we bring her personal items to move in to her own campus apartment. She is not in her own place during this coming week of Captains practices. She will be crabby after her doctor’s appointment/physical this afternoon when she gets several booster shots. Not looking forward to the 45 minute drive home.

Have you ever wondered what our kids would post about us on the ‘Students Forum: Class of 2013’ thread?

After our trip to NY, I bought the soundtracks to *Next to Normal *and In the Heights. Having the latest cool stuff from Broadway has eased the tension on some recent car rides.

Thank you notes are done - woohoo!

Congrats fireflyscout! D went off to her summer job with half of her notes done; the rest went with her (carefully packed with addresses and stamps by moi ;)). What do you bet they will come home in exactly the same condition next week?

I just reserved our meals for orientation weekend - I’ve been putting it off for months.

D’s thank yours are also done. Mailed them this morning along with the tuition check for the first semester. ;)

We are moving daughter in Pre-orientation. Special service/volunteerr program. Going to NYC a couple o days eary, doing Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Then move her in and come home. She will do orientation without us. But when we moved older daughter to same school two years ago, we didn’t attend any of the parent events anyway. husband doesn’t tolerate those parent things well, so this time we won’t be missing stuff.

Daughter is glad we are helping her get all set up and is looking forward to be an “old hand” when the other freshman move in. She will still, of course, do all the orientation stuff, like her sister, who couldn’t wait for us to get out of there, but appreciated the help all the same.

So strange, four weeks from todau about this time we will be landing at JFK, trying to find a cab big enough to deal with all the lugguge!!

How about booking a mini-van or van service in advance?

ilovetoquilt, when i was just a kid my family (2 adults and 4 kids) flew through NY and stopped to visit my grandparents for a few days. We were on our way overseas and had a lot of luggage with us. Never found a cab that would take all of us and our stuff so my dad, my sister and I ended up taking a bus and several subways with about half the luggage to get to my grandparents house. After the red eye from California, this was memorable and not in a particularly good way.

Purpose of story, you might want to reserve a car service to take you into the city.

ilovetoquilt, I used to live in Manhattan and took a number of car services. The financial firm I worked for used to use Elite Limo, which meant they were pretty expensive. I think I also used Carmel ([CarmelLimo - NY Limousine Service New York City, Airport Limousine Services. Limousine New York City (NYC) & At NY Airport](NYC Limousine Service Rates | Limousine Rental | CarmelLimo)) and Tel Aviv ([Tel-Aviv - Rates - New York Car Service, NY City Limousine Service, NYC Airport Service](http://www.telavivlimo.com/rates.html)) and you can get representative rates for minivans and vans. You can find many others on the web. I don’t have a recollection that some were better than others, but I am sure that is the case.

Same music we listened to on our way to/from the beach last week (H was not in the car).

What did you think of “Next to Normal”? I love the music but show sounds depressing. D is already planning to see it. She loved “In the Heights”, that’s next on my list to see.

This is a scary thought indeed. I just hope my kids never find out that I post here.

I like the music a lot. I wanted to see it when we were in NY, but I knew that there were lots of shows that Ds 16 and 13 would enjoy more. (So my consolation prize was buying the soundtrack.) It seems like a very sad show.

*In the Heights *was such fun! Son (who didn’t even see it) is trying to memorize all of Usnavi’s raps…yes, a red haired, blue eyed rapper.

from Student Forum: Class of 2013:

My parents have lost it. Eggmom is OBSESSED with STUFF. Why do I need a year’s supply of toothpaste right now? And school supplies are for little kids. Geez. I tell her every day that I’ve checked the college email … whether I have or not.

And now Eggdad is driving me crazy! He just got that iphone and he texts me 2-3 times a day. Just to ask how I am!!

Good thing I am leaving in less than 3 weeks.

Eggson

^^ Exactly. And then some.

Ok - Just to put a little pressure on myself, I have decided to complete the quilt that I started for my darling D 16 years ago. She loves the fabrics and the pattern. Wish me luck!

D2 was delightful today even after the shots! Shocked me! We had a delightful day together and even talked about school. I will not jinx things and hope for good things the next few days before departure. ;)
