Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

My mention of the boys being in the G/T program was really not to make any particular point about the success or failure of G/T programs. I mentioned it to signal that all of the guys have the raw brainpower to understand the material at about any university…but that’s obviously not enough.

This year has gone by so quickly that I was taken by surprise by the storms yesterday. But alas, late April to May are prime storm season around here. Further southwest there were reports of grapefruit sized hail…heck, if your car is going to be totalled, might as well be with grapefruit sized hail rather than baseball (the largest we have had at our house.)

All is safe and sound in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Remember when we took the short spring break trip in 2012 that centered around pie? Granbury is where we stayed (and ate.) Six people dead there. Very sadly, the neighborhood was mostly Habitat for Humanity houses. Pretty much any house is defenseless in the path of a mile wide tornado on the ground, so I hope there’s not a lot of criticism of Habitat (unless it’s warranted, of course.)

Kmc, my H would love to be married to you! A wife who will paint the house!!! (I’m sure YOU would never drive on a flat tire!)

Moda, your call to the suit department was absolute genius!

TA, congrats to Son2.

After the APUSH exam, D2 said that she knew “some” of the answers, so at least she “didn’t get a 0.” Poor thing doesn’t even know there is no such grade…so she might be happy with a 1! Remember how APUSH is the class where the teacher moved away and they’ve had last semester’s student teacher this whole semester? The lady doesn’t know “how things are done”, so they are actually having a real, comprehensive final exam. “How things are done” normally in AP classes at our HS is that they work like fiends for 5 1/2 of the 6 grading periods, then watch movies and take field trips after the AP exam is over, but do enough easy stuff to give everyone the opportunity to make a high A for the last grading period. You may think this is fair, or you may think this is a waste of time, or you may think it’s grade inflation…all I think is that it sure would have been nice for D2 to have had the opportunity to make a high A for the last grading period!

I see we’ve been exiled to a sub-forum. Hope everyone finds us.

Yikes! What a surprise! Would have been nice to know beforehand!

I found you all! ;)

Thanks for the notice on Facebook, NM. Actually, I think it’s a good solution, since a few people didn’t like the “Class of” threads.

I feel like we’ve decluttered the house in a way with this new sub forum. I guess the Parent’s forums had a lot of Class of’s. And I can’t say whether they should have given a heads up or not, (or if they maybe did) because I don’t read a lot of other stuff. I look for our “star” and is where I go. We all see what happens if you start jumping into other areas of discussion!

The new florist is beyond wonderful (I think). So excited to see it all come together. I am a little concerned about hydrangea in bouquets because they’re planning on taking a lot of the wedding party pictures early on and I dont want them all wilty before they head down the aisle.

D2 called today. Said she barely knows what to do with the time on her hands, except that she has a lot of catching up to do. Most professors are very supportive and have said what a great job the team had done in putting Denver in the conversation on a national level, but one is kind of a dink. She’ll muttle through, but I think she ended up really liking the girls on the team and they her, and the work and dedication of these kids is nothing to sneeze at. While I don’t think you should be accepted to a college or university based on anything but the ability to do the work, I do wonder how some of these kids that get a pretty big bump on their application get it all done… or if they really even bother… or if it’s the case that “I am Charlotte Simmons” depiction is still how it goes today.

Time to paint the table. Cracks me up that it takes me two days to get this done while KMC is likely scaling a ladder and replacing siding! :)

busy looking at the Helle Comforts! Thanks–the nike’s too
I wonder if students will be less likely to post on parent forums now

I am just glad everyone is following the breadcrumbs! :)

There is now an announcement on the Parents forum for everyone to see:

Thanks MaineLonghorn!

Hey RM…how is your knee feeling???

Moda, I will give you one piece of advice on the flowers. My SIL’s flowers looked pretty bad after the florist stuck them in the church’s fridge and they partially froze. You might want to get a plan ahead of time for where they should leave the flowers.

I’m happy now that I know who my supervisor is and what I will do research in for the next 2 years…

Moda…our florist delivered the flowers in individual containers that had water in them. The girls would pose for pictures with the flowers and then put them back in the disposable vases. They stayed fresh in the middle of the August heat and we even used them for table centerpieces for Sunday’s brunch.

Son and his GF graduated this month with engineering degrees. Both had internships undergrad. Both had job offers, son had multiple job offers. My sons resume was impressive with summer internships (gotten through his schools job fair), clubs on campus, etc… and stellar grades and GPA.

Good luck to you.

Brilliant!

Just back from dinner with some old neighbors. Can’t believe the last of the kids are graduating from college this year!

That IS Brilliant NMN… and I will definitely relay the tip and use it. I am just really hoping it’s nice weather that weekend. No church (and no fridge). It’s an outdoor greek-esque open air but under cover type space. If it’s just raining, it’ll be fine. But if it’s windy or pouring, the likelihood it will blow in is pretty high, which wouldn’t be good. The florist arrives at 2 and D starts pictures at 2:30. They are getting almost all their wedding party photos done before hand and we’ll do family ones immediately following ceremony so we can all get to the cocktail hour - so now you know my family priorities. Actually, I didn’t know about the “first look” photos until last week.

But I will definitely make sure there is now a way to keep the girls flowers in water at the reception as well. Waiting for all RSVP’s to come in before we decide how we’re doing the tables… We’re using the 2 “alter” arrangements for the escort cards and the table of hors d’oeurves and the pew flowers will be bunched in two flat backed vases for the bar. And we’re filling the torch urns with large hanging baskets of light pink impatients without the wire and will use those on the porch of the hotel where the reception is, as well as the front entry to the hotel itself. And since brunch is in the same room as dinner the night before, I figure we’re just leaving it all there. But this way too, I can give the hanging baskets to people who have been helpful (like my next door neighbor who gave her unit to D’s future inlaws family to use - along with mine).

Table painted, boat engine cover reupholstered and now I need to get it down to the boatyard so they can put it back on the boat and make the new cover. There are very few times when I think a pick up truck would be good to have, but this is one of them!

And oh… learned today that all my planning to be at S’s graduation weekend when festivities began just blew up when they published the actual schedule today. S’s departmental reception is two hours earlier than what they said any of them were starting! And I just don’t know if spending several hundred dollars in change fees and a hotel room somewhere not there (as it’s all booked) is gonna happen. Totally “worth it” but not, you know? I’ll just have to be satisfied in meeting the uni pres vs his favorite professors, but still not right.

Moda – having just sat through three different graduation ceremonies, missing one would have been…okay. My hips have almost recovered. Almost. (Given that the grads had to be there an hour or more before each ceremony, and it took a good half hour after the big ceremonies to meet up and be introduced to various people – we’re talking 4 hours per. basically.)

The wedding plans sound amazing. I’m a little scared about what will happen when D gets married – she got the mom who has zilch in the way of decorating skills. Zilch minus, if truth be told.

Younger S is coming home today after his first year of college. Everything is packed and stored for the summer. I count navigating “life” for themselves one of the best lessons my kids have learned by attending school so far away from home.

arabrab, I have no decorating skills, either. H has always taken care of that. D has quite a knack for it, too. I’m sure we have other skills to our credit!

crazed, congrats on S’s graduation and employment!

TA, enjoy the ceremony and congrats on s2s strong finish!

Hey, arabrab, no worries…there are folks who will do that for you!

Missy, mch started life as an engineer, wandered into architecture, then programming, so there’s little in the mechanical universe he doesn’t understand. As a result, just about every half-baked, left-handed predicament I get into gives him fodder for mockery…and yes, I’ve driven on a flat tire…and through myriad other mishaps  (I now carry a can of fix-a-flat in te car at all times, though most recently used it to help a stranded guy with a wee baby get his van off the busy road.) But this “organizational approach” was entirely mch’s scheme…he bought it, put it in my car, said "repeat after me, I will always keep fix-a-flat in the car…)

For example, the other night when the firewood guy was dropping off a face cord, he and mch were discussing forestry and some tree limbs that have to go. There’s a huge limb in the back field that’s been there from a storm before we bought the place. Mch pointed to it and said: mcmom uses you because she’s not allowed near a chainsaw…she’s as left-handed as they come ;)

So im not exactly a Martha on the competency front, but I get in industrious moods now and then

Eg., our house is a long, low, rambling ranch that likely started life in the 60s as a cottage and then wandered west a little. It’s batten board and fieldstone. So when I say I plan to paint the house, which sounds über ambitious, what I really mean is I will slowly, likely over the next month or so, roll sections of the batten board with semi-opaque matching stain to freshen the look, as opposed to any sanding, trimming, skill bearing nonsense. I did the pool house last year and now it really pops.

I want to plug away at it now before lazy pool season is in full swing, and because I’m sloppy, and I want to do it before I contemplate the deck, which totally needs a restore treatment and which is a much uglier job.

DTE - knee is doing okay. Still can’t really kneel on it but the tape the put on to hold it together is still on so I’m assuming that means it’s not totally healed. I’m guessing a few more weeks. Overall not bad. I still think that there is some swelling as I can feel the arthritis more still.
