Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

My husband has always had a beard. It would be weird to see him without one now. Last time I saw him without one was when he was about 20.

@Shawbridge, ShawD would have a lot of fun with a Wheaten! Gluten Free has a ring to it, especially with her allergy, but possible nicknames could prove iffy (‘Glutie’?). Not that she would ever use that nickname, but nicknames can assume a life of their own. Some years ago my father started referring to Casey as ‘his nibs’ and that morphed into my occasionally calling him (Casey, not my father) "niblet’ in his later years. Ok, too silly.

I had my beard from junior year reading period until when ShawD was 3 or 4. I decided to shave it off because I was getting prematurely distinguished when it started to flecks of grey. ShawWife was worried that ShawD would not recognize me and be freaked out, so I brought her into the bathroom with me as I shaved it off. She’s now 21. Probably she can handle it – actually, she saw it growing in Croatia.

Lol. I’ve never seen mch without a beard, but I’ve certainly witnessed him grow “more distinguished” over the years

Arabrab, too funny about hubby’s demented beard look, but I have seen what I suspect you mean and I thank you for your vigilance :)

Shaw, I don’t know a lot about nursing directly but I know a handful of nurses in various management positions. One is a VP of a large network of hospitals and a medical group…so like your friend, not “immediately” involved on the ground, so to speak. In your shoes, I’d ask her WHO to talk to at the other hospital, and she’d likely offer to make the introduction. She would then leave the hiring manager to do his or her job as they saw fit
My hunch is it would be similar with your friend…and I do think warm introductions are helpful.

My H can’t really grow a full beard, and when he had a mustache, he looked a little like a “Guido” and not in a good way. My son in law has a beard and my D says he has absolutely no chin without it. S said last night that he will be shaving it for interviews, absolutely. Yeah!! And he’s been checking his spam folder. Yeah!!

Now let’s hope that whatever rain is coming this way moves out quickly. I want to have a great family boat day!!

Just as I typed that, the heavens opened up. But I can still see blue ski. Somewhere closeby there’s likely a great rainbow.

We had a beautiful rainbow last night. Hope you get your blue skies soon!

Shaw - re: ShawD’s employment. I think a phone call form the CEO could only help but I think it would be dependent on his relationship with the director of nursing and/or the hiring manager.

We also just spent $300+ at the grocery store for the weekend - full house! Good lord!

Funny about the beard making your H look demented. Some of our attorneys need to never be in casual clothes because they look demented or homeless.

woody, I don’t know that there would be any relationship with the hiring manager at a sister hospital. There might be one with the director of nursing. He’d certainly know the CEO and some of the senior managers of the sister hospital.

ShawSon is meeting ShawD so she can pick his clothes. Then he’ll take her to Guardian of the Galaxies.

Hey now there’s an idea. She wants to get her bike from home so she can ride (I’m guessing to her preceptorship). Maybe he can put on the fairly heavy bike rack and take it in. Plus, he needs to return all of her camping gear that (she’s never used) he borrowed. It’s been drying in our backyard after some serious weather on an extended backpacking trip in Glacier National Park.

Moda – was it a double rainbow? <a href=“Yosemitebear Mountain Double Rainbow 1-8-10 - YouTube”>Yosemitebear Mountain Double Rainbow 1-8-10 - YouTube;

Enjoyed not working the weekend. D was able to get her house so Sat. was spent cleaning it from top to bottom. Only thing we didn’t get cleaned was the true “basement” where her laundry room is but other than that all the walls were washed, floors washed, bathrooms scrubbed, and counters scrubbed. Here washer/dryer and fridge is supposed to be delivered tomorrow and this Sat. we will move her furniture and boxes from the apartment.

So Sat. her mail came – first day really “in the house” although not moved in yet – and you guessed it – her tax bill came. I had warned her to expect it.

Wow, RM and last week I complained about having to clean a small aprtment.

Moda, I’ve been laughing/cringing at this idea all weekend! But for me, H would likely be a hoarder. At 55, he is still buying “collectibles” from eBay. He is able to organize stuff without getting rid of a thing and let me tell you, it is horrible…things so crammed in that there is no hope of ever getting it out, every drawer and cupboard filled to the brim. When we needed a place for the snuggies/throws in the family room, he got out some of these (that he pulled out of a neighbor’s trash): http://www.sears.com/stor-floor-standing-6-cube-storage-unit/p-00913332000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&kpid=00913332000&kispla=00913332000P&kpid=00913332000&mktRedirect=y

Congrats to RM D on her move! Yay! So happy for her. I remember that H and I finally felt like real adults when we bought our first home.

I hate to clean and do anything to avoid it. I have de-cluttered and thrown away things rather than have things to dust. As we get older our house becomes more stark and clean.

Shaw…my H is a hospital CEO. He never becomes involved in the hiring process unless it would be a direct hire for him. He will, however, pass on resumes to hiring managers and act as a reference for those he knows. He has a Director of Nursing that reports to him but even she isn’t directly involved in the hiring process. I believe the process starts with recruiting in HR and then moves to nursing managers.

RM that is so great, congrats to your D.

Well, we were empty nesters for one day and then D came home for a long weekend. D, her BFF /maid of honor and I went to a bridal store on Sunday and she found her dress. D and her fiance had engagement pictures taken today, some of them are posted on the photographer’s FB page and even in my “unbiased” opinion, they are gorgeous!

Thanks, NM. I also spoke today with a friend who used to be a hospital CEO. He said something similar: All he can do is ensure that she gets an interview. After that, it is all up to her and the hospital bureaucracy.

Sounds like an awesome weekend, Fallgirl!
RM, glad you had a chance to “not work” though in my books, I’d rather work than clean a house! How exciting for your D.

Missy, those hoarding genes are tough to conquer. The smartest thing I ever did was hire in a dumpster and paid mcson to purge. Anything that couldn’t go to goodwill or get tossed got stored in large plastic bins and sent to the “archives.” (Basement storage area, stacked on pallets.) The impetus, of course, was building out the studio in the 1300 SF “second garage” that had become a repository for all mch’s formerly hoarded goodies that I’d slowly moved out of the house, or had never let in on the move. The move, of course, helped enormously on that front.

Mcson had joked that he was going to have to do it sooner or later (eg…when we die) and this way all the excess is in one location.

Under these conditions, things have been kept reasonably tame. But if I want an idea of how things could get I only have to look at H’s sis, who should have her own show. If he survives me, we’re in trouble ;)

FallGirl…if you are sharing links to the photographer’s website I would love to see the pics! PM me if that would be ok.

Meeting D2 for a morning of shopping at the new Outlet Mall. Hoping to find some new running clothes for her.

D1 is researching schools around here to get her MBA! Yay! I saw her info sitting out on the kitchen table so my discussion with her must have struck a chord with her. It will be a long haul as she plans on continuing working and going to school. She is hoping she can start in January if all of the pieces fall in place.

My insomnia has returned. Ugh…

Fallgirl, yay for finding the dress, hopefully without any reality show-worthy drama.

NM, great that your D1 is looking at MBA schools!

Older D leaves to return to school late this afternoon. Then the nest will at last be empty.

RM, I just read an excerpt from a book that made me think of you. Look under the heading about being a miracle worker:
