kmcmom13, this is a temporary assignment for H, so we WILL be moving again soon, probably in 18-24 months. The question is: will we do anything NOW to make it better in the future? I need to figure out the best way to get rid of things. We donated a ton to Goodwill and recycled lots of electronics at Best Buy, and had a huge mountain of trash at our old home, but we still have too much stuff. Some of it is perfectly good stuff, we just don’t need it. But there’s a lot of time and energy involved in going through and disposing.

Example: in my now 21 year old son’s room were trophies from sports in elementary school. He doesn’t want them. I know there ARE places that take trophies and recycle them. The only ones I could find were in other states. I called four local places before we moved and got as far as being given email addresses of people to contact who MIGHT take them. Too much work. So yes, we moved the stupid trophies. I should have just put them in the trash.

c_q – I know what you mean about the trophies. When everything came out of long-term storage (2 yrs) when the beach house was finished, I made D & S come for a weekend to sort through all their stuff again. (They had already gotten rid of lots before things went into storage.) It was pretty funny to see them looking at some of the stuff and saying, “Why did I keep this?” Anyway, they both had trophies, medals, etc. S only kept a few (swimming, hockey); D kept a few more (gymnastics). Then we lined up all the ones they didn’t want, took photos, and threw them out. It was just too complicated to try to find some place that would take them.

I think we all need to have a 3:00 AM Skype chat or something – I was awake then, too. (I did finally fall back asleep.)

CBB…we also took photos of the girls’ trophies and then threw them out. Who will ever display them? I am presently framing a poster/photos/medal from D2’s marathon for her. She said she would like to hang it in her future home gym. I am trying to get rid of some living room furniture right now.

We took the name plates off the trophys and put them in the Goodwill bag. We threw away one or two that the name would not come off. Wish we had thought to take a picture.

So funny that we were all still up but to be honest your 3 is only my 12. I think I went to bed around 1 last night.

BFF moved to Denver yesterday. Very sad. And what a mess she had moving. She got to the point where she just called the junk guys an let them take stuff she had thought to move. I will miss her so much as she was the only person I enjoy shopping with. I could find the best stuff for her and I liked looking.
I was surprised at the timing but another friend called for coffee as my friend flew away. Made me feel good.

H is in Mass. visiting his mother. I have been purging drawers and my closet. Beginning to just do room by room except for the office. I am allergic to cleaning it.

The kids packed their boxes and then in the final stretch I packed each with a “deep Storage” box. Yes, we will likely have to keep moving them, but I figure it was mostly stuff I just felt it wasn’t my decision to throw away and they weren’t there. Not a ton of trophies were ever saved because we never really kept the participation ones regardless.

Then again, at the rate I am going it wont be a matter of endless moving, but of endless storage!

Can’t comment on the moving having lived in the same house since about a year after graduating from college. I just can’t imagine!

I was awake briefly around 2:30-3:00. Turned over looked at the clock and promptly went back to sleep. I don’t know how you all do it. I’m in bed no later on a work day than 9 and still have issues getting up at 4:30 for the gym lately. I like to sleep!

The big boxes of trophies are in such a far corner of the attic that it would be a lot more trouble to find them to pitch them than to leave them be.
Just driving back to the city from visiting the in laws. They have NO intention of purging before they depart this earth. They have two houses with full basements and a warehouse/ barn with the farm house, crammed full of stuff. When they pass on, the bus needs to pick me up and take me away for about 3 months. Oh no wait. I forgot that FIL will survive us all. Never mind.
I counted 32 clocks in their living/dining room.

The bus needs to come here! I’m having a hard time unpacking because there are boxes blocking where the items need to go. I’m making progress, but VERY slowly.

32 clocks?? Oh my lord… that is scary!
Going out of my mind here… I bought six Little Golden Books last year to give to all of my sisters for Christmas this year. The book was a recompilation of Golden Book themes for adults… very, very cute. Well, of course, I can no longer find them. AARRGGHH!!

c_q I was driving on the Henry Hudson Parkway last night and approximated the view in your photo… so pretty!

Woody, as soon as things settle a bit we need to schedule a meet-up. Right now it’s hard to imagine ever being settled! At least I am still enjoying the view, even amidst the boxes.

Good luck with the move-in, c_q. And MP…all those clocks? One room? Shudder. Friends bought a cute little fixer-upper in LA many years ago. The lady who had lived there had carefully cut out images of birds from various wallpaper samples and glued them to her living room walls. All the living room walls.

We’re heading out for the warmth tomorrow – though it was mighty nice here today. Fingers crossed that I make it through the flight without catching someone’s dreaded flu/cold/whatever germs.

Progress! After dinner I finally found the sharp knives. The past two weeks I have been using a table knife to slice tomatoes, chop carrots, cut up chicken, etc. Thanksgiving is sometimes about small details. I’m also thankful we don’t have 32 clocks!

My folks probably have 32 clocks, but that would be in the entire house not in one room.

Had to change S’s airline ticket from Wednesday to Tuesday due to forecast. A bit of snow on the northern end (where he is) should not faze them, but there is possibly 3-6 inches of snow arriving here on Wednesday and that is enough to cause airport issues as well as major panic on the roads. The day before Thanksgiving. Not a good picture.
Safe travels to all.

My h probably has 32 clocks by now…but fortunately most of them are watches He says I have a shoe thing (I don’t feel I do, compared to how I used to, at least) but he definitely has more watches than I do shoes. I gave him a huge watch storage box a few years ago and noticed the other day it looks full

Ages ago when we were dating and I was unaware of the existence of watch fetishers, he had a Chronos magazine laying around and had marked the page of a watch he liked. So I called the mfg of the watch, thinking it would be a nice gift.

The tourbilion with the PLASTIC band was “only” $119,000 – not a typo – and the leather band was $149,000!

When I recovered my ability to speak, the gal on the phone and I had quite a chuckle about her typical clientele.

For years, I was too intimidated to buy him any watch, until I discovered he’s an equal-opportunity watch lover, not an elitist watch lover The criteria seems to be that it needs to be unusual in the way it tells time, or particularly storied or otherwise composed of unusual materials, or super artsy looking. He’s as happy with a Tokyo Flash creation as he is from a dial face made of cork. He will still wear a gold, collector Mickey Mouse watch when it suits his mood :)

And yet this same guy will ONLY wear cowboy boots of a specific make, and will buy multiple, identical pairs every few years. And that’s all he will wear, except black Naots in the summer. Quirky, is all i can say ;)

When I was a kid, I got a Tom Mix watch. His revolver marked the seconds, going back and forth. I loved that watch. On my last trip to China I bought a watch in Tiananmen Square with Mao on the face. His waving hand kept the time in seconds. It worked for about four hours. !

I came up to the lake last night to meet a fireplace service man this morning. When I got here I found the kitchen a mess from when D1 and her BF were here last weekend. Spilled and dried chili on stove top and dried on my walnut counter. When I turned on the oven it was smoking from something that had spilled over. The bathroom sink was a mess with toothpaste. We have a “cabin rules” list that she clearly disregarded. SO not happy with her as I have spent several hours cleaning . Then I noticed that once again the rusty sludge was back in the toilet tanks and laundry tub! The plumber had just been here last week and had water tested and blew out all of the lines. Tests were negative for an iron bacteria and tests also reveal that there is a very low iron count in the water. Talked with the plumbing company again this morning. I sent pictures and they are totally surprised and are forwarding them to the manufacturer of our water system. I am so tired of all of this! ARRGGGHHHH!!!

Now I have to drive home in snow flurries. yuck…

sorry sorry sorry. But I have to know if the walnut counter is OK. I would be so upset. Not just with D1 but with BF too.
Also, sorry abut the iron. We had a cabin for 10 years and drilled a new well after finding white eels in the old original on from 1910. We never got rid of the iron color even though the water tested OK. I could not drink it though.
Hope you have a safe drive.

I am out to battle the traffic and run errands. A long list but it has not started raining at least.

Sorry, NM, for both the mess and the re-occurring rust issue. I hope your drive back goes well.

Having a hard time focusing on work today. Have had a few technical issues interrupt my progress. Also it’s a nice day, plus the boxes aren’t going to get unpacked by themselves. I have made a reservation for a restaurant on Thursday for our Thanksgiving meal, so that relieves some of the stress.

We just found out that we have a storage unit in the basement. We didn’t know it was included, so that was pretty exciting news! Another thing to be grateful for!
