Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

RM, sending good wishes on the surgery.
Congrats to ShawD on the pinning.
I feel so behind. I try to keep up here at Big Corp but it’s not easy.

I do have to vent a little. Son went back up to school this morning for an appointment with an academic adviser. She did advise him to tweak his major a bit so he can end up certified to teach 5 different subjects instead of one. That would have been good to know going in but whatever. The school gets a D+ for advisement so far.

But here is my vent. Educating Son is the gift that keeps on giving. He found out that due to our state’s push to prevent kids from changing majors, so they will allegedly graduate in 4 years, he (I) will have to pay OUT OF STATE tuition his last semester. The state rule is you pay OOS tuition for hours over 150. So it’s not enough that as the mom of a son with Asperger’s, I get to pay for 15 semesters of college…I get to pay a lot more for the final semester.

No wonder so many kids don’t have a degree after 6 years. If you take a full load for 5 years, the rest costs a lot more.

Ah, those state legislators.

I do plan to research the rule, however. 22 of those hours are from a private school and some are AP hours. Do we get penalized for that?

Both Ds get home Wednesday.

H did fine. He’s home and seems okay. Waiting for the dr. to call – yes they release you without talking to the dr. Sigh…

Glad things went well RM and hope the recovery is quick.

MP can you research and see if you can get an exception based on your S’s Aspergers. You would think that they would grant some leeway. Hopefully so.

Glad to hear, RM. I wonder MP whether the ADA will help you in this?

Amen KMC
I finished my class and did pretty well. Don’t have the final grade but am pleased.
I live closer to CBB and could shop I am really good at that too.
My D’s buy my stocking too. The final straw was when my H bought my stocking things, at newbury comics. silly string, an action figure, you get the drift, I put it in a bag and told him to take the expletive back to the store. My friend told me her h got her one candlestick once. Actually this year I know what I am getting I picked it out.
Shaw congrats to ShawD, she is lovely
D2 got hired perdiem at her co-op they were very happy with her. the other CA wasn’t and is now not talking to D2. D2 says she spends time working and not socializing, go figure.
MP perhaps you could explain the circumstances and they have an exception. it sounds so crazy.

RM – I hope your H is doing well post-surgery. I was rather completely unsuccessful logging in to cc friday-sunday, but it seems to work fine now. ED load? Not sure.

DTE – congrats on D2 getting hired at her co-op placement.

MP - just grrr on the OOS tuition thing.

Shawbridge – how lovely for your daughter to have such a great experience at her pinning. I’m sure she is going to be a tremendous credit to the profession.

I’ve now acquire three Christmas presents. Total. I. Am. Toast.

I have acquired a couple things for my dad and sent a book for him off to Shutterfly last night. It will really shake him up when he sees it. Hanukkah, our anniversary and my birthday all fall within four days this year. We are going away overnight for our anniversary. Not expecting any gifts. We have never done much of the Hanukkah gifting thing. My side of the family celebrates Christmas and so we get things for them.

RM – healing vibes to your DH!

missypie, I would check the regs and pursue the credit hour issue further.

Yes, you know me. I will pursue the credit hour issue until it can be pursued no further.

I took our family’s vacation slides from the NY World’s Fair, had them convereted to digital images, and made photobooks for my mom, my sister and me. In this age of digital photography, it’s amazing to think that a 2 week vacation was captured in just 18 slides. I think my mom and my sister will be pleased. There is a photo of the three of us in front of the Unisphere, with a couple in the foreground corner…the man is in a dark suit, dark glasses and a fedora - totally out of Mad Men. That is how folks dressed to go to the fair! Anyway, I had a large print of it made, matted and framed (all very reasonbly priced thanks to a snapfish coupon) for myself. If I didn’t get anything else for Christmas, I would be happy with that. I’m obsessed with it.

Shaw, I have a question for you as our representative of the male gender. Do bright, well educated men just pretend to not know how to shop?! My H wanted to send a ton of gourmet popcorn for his parents. I insisted that he do it himself He called me THREE times before he was able to complete the online order.

I’m a fabulous online shopper. I can usually get it lower than other people. I don’t like to go to stores except for Costco.

When buying for someone else, I am not always clear on what the purchaser wants or how the purchaser would make the tradeoffs between size, quality, color, flavor, etc.

Oh joy. End of year bonus time. One person got $100K more than last year and was somewhat unhappy. Another one has done extremely well but somehow thinks he deserves more. My top admin person, who I think made $100K thinks she deserves $150K. And, it wasn’t nearly as good a year as last year.

Really - that type of bonus in this economy. Darn where do I sign up. I will be lucky if they give us 1/2 day off on the 24th and if they do I will be very happy!!!

We actually get our bonuses in the Sept. timeframe but again we are more in the 2K realm not 100K. How could anyone be unhappy even at 10K?

These are highly skilled, highly paid consultants who spent lots of time on the road. The vast majority of their pay comes in bonus . Maybe bonus is not the right term, but we tote up the revenue they are responsible for and a significant part of their comp comes as a percentage of what the revenue they are associated with.

Shaw, if the formula is clear, they should have a pretty good idea in advance of what the number should be. Or do they tend to over estimate their contributions?

Agreed. The first one did a bit of a career change and wants to get above where she was in her old job, which hasn’t happened yet, but will over time. The second wants to change the formula but has a remarkable sense of entitlement that is not entirely justified and becomes deeply hurt when you point out the lack of justification. This is the least pleasant part of my job.

Shaw, it must be very difficult to keep everyone from not taking it so personally.
Go for it MP! What a ridiculous policy.
Healing thoughts to rochmom H…ugh!

Maybe 10 years back we switched comp and promotions from year end to Jan 31. People still get upset but at least the holidays aren’t ruined. (But woe to the person who spends a bonus in December that doesn’t materialize in January )

H gets bonuses on a very strict formula. Some years it is beyond fabulous and some years not at all. It is very cut and dried. This year fabulous but next year may not be great as numbers are very bad so far based n Obama care reimbursements.

Chevy Chases Christmas Vacation

Yes, Oregon? I have never actually seen that movie, but it comes up so much that I need to watch it soon.

All three kids are traveling today. By nightfall, I will have three kids back in the house, who will all want to be fed.
