Hi all! We’re back from 12 sunny, warm days in FL – although returning to all the snow and cold here was quite a shock! It was snowing the day we left (just enough to delay the flight by about an hour), then The Blizzard, then another big storm, then a dusting yesterday – which was still enough to back up flight arrivals, meaning we hung around the Ft. Meyers airport for an extra 2 1/2 hours. The reason we were returning yesterday was because of a trip on H’s schedule. While we were waiting at the airport yesterday he got an email that the trip needs to be rescheduled – meaning we could have stayed longer. BUT, D had been staying at our condo taking care of the puppy, and she and her bf did yeoman duty shoveling, etc. – so, IMO, it was time to come back and let D get back to her own life. We’ll be treating them both to a show, or Bruins game, or whatever they choose.
Sending the healing, warm light to all in need. We’re in line for a multi-day snow “event” so I’ll be stocking up on groceries today.
Thanks for the birthday wishes. Had a great day. Took Friday off and Monday! Yeah!!! Having a nice day weekend. New laptop thanks to H and I love it although will take some getting used to as it has a touch screen. Love it!!! Enjoying the nice long weekend. H took me out to dinner last night at a bar that we like and tonight we are going to a play and he has reservations set up for someplace nice I’m sure. Sunday the kids and grandkid will be coming over. D’s birthday is just a week after mine so we will celebrate both. I have a nice roast that I’m going to cook that I know everyone will appreciate. Then a nice relaxing Mon. although H could be home due to we are expecting another large snow storm but that’s ok.
Glad to hear that you are having a nice birthday weekend, RM.
Welcome back, CBB. I was in FL a few weeks ago and wish I could have stayed longer. I never saw myself as a snowbird type but walking on the beach with temps in the mid 60’s and sunshine is making me think of this becoming an annual thing.
Yet another snow event headed your way, CBB? Has everything melted from the last one?
70 here today. Just phenomenal, but we did laugh at the solid line of people hiking up the Mesa trail from Chautauqua. It looked like a mile long army of ants.
Ha! Exactly none of the snow has melted!!! We’re in the area (metro Boston, west) on the weather map that’s labeled something like “Jackpot Potential” in the current storm. It’s supposed to snow until early Tuesday morning. D & bf flew to Baltimore Friday morning. Something tells me they won’t be back for days … They both took their work laptops with them. If not for the dog H & I would probably just hole up inside until about Wednesday. The worst part is there’s simply no place to put the additional snow.
Shaw, are you still abroad? You know, any time you’re looking for a dinner date in London, I’m pretty sure the magic bus would send a handful of us! And I’m equally certain we’d BE a handful…
After last winter, I almost feel “survivor’s guilt” to read about my cyberpals in the northeast. I will send y’all some melting mojo. By comparison, its been a very calm winter here so far – fingers crossed it stays that way a little longer, because with mch laid up, I need all the lucky breaks I can get, at least until we’re safely in the Caribbean at the end of next week I’m desperately hoping there’s no big Ninja Chicago storm that grounds Ohare…we leave Friday.
So, one (of many) awesome aspects of mcson dating a Band geek girl would appear to be her willingness to go to the symphony on a Saturday night I’m really digging the compatibility of these two.
As an oft-married elder at my writing group said yesterday on the subject of mcson, thank god for love to get over love Coming from him it was kinda funny…I think he subscribes to the Tom Robbins school of “marry well and often.”
MP you and I are in this together. I sometimes hate feeling like a fish out of water. actually feel that way a lot. been studying for a test for a while. catch up is hard.
Boston has used its snow budget. I am not in jackpot, but will get enough. so happy I am not working. I got a hotel room one night.
Happy Birthday RM.
Morning all. Enjoying my day at home. More snow here and happy that I didn’t have to go in this morning. I will log in to work for a bit later today.
S and DIL made an offer on another house yesterday. This is the 2nd that they have offered on and again rejected. They put in a bit over the asking price but added in a couple of things that they wanted and I guess the couple didn’t want to give up one of the things. Now if they had countered my S would have given it up – they really liked the house but the couple had another offer that was lower and just took the lower price. Both S and DIL were upset. Ugh. Nothing that I can do to fix it. Was so much easier when they were little and had little issues. Seems like houses in our area go really quickly. Not a lot on the market that are in good condition and too many buyers. I’m sure that they will find something. Everyone over yesterday for dinner. Was good to have us all together.
@kmcmom13, really glad to hear about your son’s new relationship moving along so nicely.
Alas, I came home Friday night in time for more snow this weekend – I did eat a late lunch in BA’s fanciest lounge and then dinner on the plane in First Class, but the previous night was solo. I don’t always plan well for my trips in terms of dinners and wish there were some sort of site that matched interesting people who didn’t have dinner companions. However, I wonder if it could create the wrong expectations.
Our neighborhood has a sort of progressive dinner each year, which ShawWife helped start when ShawSon was starting kindergarten. The first year, we hosted 150 people for the cocktails/appetizer part and then they spread out to various houses for dinner. We haven’t hosted since then but this year went to a very nice couple’s house for dinner. Last night, ShawWife made a lamb roast for dinner and we invited a couple of couples over.
My office is shut today again due to snow, but we are set up to have everyone to work from home. I did just drive to the local store to pick up some milk and more than half the cars on the road were the private snowplow crew going from house to house. Our plow/shovel guys were at our house six times in January.
It is so dark here due to rain that it could b evening. But no snow. D is hoping to have a snow day to study. She has been seeing a young man who she enjoyed and things were moving on when she realized he smokes. He was surprised when she asked him how long he has been as he thought he was covering it. So he is a definite out. She feels like she is going threw guys pretty rapidly --dropping them after a few weeks-- I told her that at least they were not dropping her. She had one BF in HS and one serious one in college and one serious one after. She is, in my opinion, catching up now. In HS they were pretty goody goody and hung as a group. I think most of us here dated one on one which is a very different skill set.
Happy for mcson. Sad for RM’s S and house. Spend part of yesterday going to an open house that our second D (figuratively) and her H are trying to buy. They were so sweet and came over for dinner and told us, after swearing not to tell a soul, that she is PG. I am quite motivated to get them on this side of the city.
Well, H and I did not liike the house. The view and neighborhood is good. The house was built in 1932 and updated last in 1994. We went without the kids so we could be ruthless and take notes. I found out that there is an oil tank somewhere and no one knows if has been decomissioned, there probably lead
paint, the realator commented that it would all be covered by now. But once S and A began to take the walls down to open up the floor plan there will be lead dust. So I have something new to worry and reseach. I worked with a young boy years ago and after many sessions the mom mentioned the lead pain in/on their house… everything about his behaviour fit for lead poisoning.
Shaw, I know about the eating alone issue. I do not mind it once I am in the restaurant but getting motivated to go is what is difficult for me.
RM hope your B’Day weekend was fun.
I seriously need caretaker patience classes. The chapters that cover “when a nice person is in your space” and “when the emotional climate created by the patient is sucking your energy”
Need to decided within week whether to cancel our Italy trip. H sees the surgeon on Thursday. He is of the thought that we do nothing and hope we go. I am of the thought we should figure out the best way to retreive whatever funds we can. If he is no better I am not traveling with him (could mean an ER abroad) and if the doc wants to go in and do another repair he will not be ready. It is just 8 weeks away, so decisons decisons.
Our typical pattern is that I will make the call and I will be mostly right but he will have none of the repsonsibilty of the said call. Guess I am stuck today and will see what the surgeon says.
A belated happy birthday, RM! Sorry about the house, though.
Oregon, here’s hoping for clear answer/insight.
We’re having nothing but unusually warm temperatures and sunshine. It would be enviable, except it’s the fourth year of our drought with no end in sight. Pretty grim.
D2 was asked if she wanted to be the assistant (or something like that) to the office of teaching/learning at her school. She (wisely) said no, as next year is supposed to be pretty heavy as she must qualify for candidacy by researching and writing a series of “props” (proposals?) for potential research projects, including her own. I understand little of the science involved in her research; but the projects she works on are very interesting.
And is anybody else thinking Downton Abbey is having trouble finding its way this season?
arabrab – Thanks for the offer; very tempting! Although, we did just get back from FL – so I shouldn’t be complaining that much. I’m actually pretty OK with the cold, and snow in general isn’t all that bad. I guess the main thing here is there’s simply no place to put any more snow, so even after streets are plowed, they end up so narrow it’s like driving through tunnels. The T (subway) and commuter trains were shut down completely last night and will remain that way today. I guess there are a few buses. The puppy is going a little stir crazy.
Glad you had a nice birthday, RM.
oregon – good luck with your decisions; tough call for sure.
kmc – good to hear such positive things about your S; it’s so gut-wrenching to see your kids hurting.
NM – hope you’re up and running soon with a new computer. We’ve all become so dependent on them and all the related technology.
Re: Downton Abbey – although I do enjoy the show and look forward to watching it every week, I’ve had some of those same thoughts, Zetesis. As I mentioned over on the DA thread, there seem to be more “throw-away” lines/mini conversations that don’t lead anywhere. I keep reminding myself it’s an entertaining show, and not to get too caught up in all the details. There were rumors on the DA thread that next season will be the final one. If so, it may be a good thing – sort of how I feel about the “Outlander” series, which is rumored to be ending with the next book.
Morning all. Well changes on the house front. S’s realtor asked him if he was really interested in the house it he wanted to put in a better offer (3K over asking price) and make sure that they new that all the “additions” were negotiable. They did and “bumped” the other offer – so as long as they don’t get bumped (won’t be totally solidified until COB Wed.) then they have a house. Closing would be early April. So just waiting for Wed. to be over!
Enjoyed my long weekend. Not really ready to be back which may be why I got to work this morning and realized that I needed to go right back home and pick up my laptop. Whoops…
Good morning all. Easing VERY slowly into my day. Visiting my mother wipes me out. It’s fine to do all the things o on her to do list…but yesterday the list was done and we had three hours to “just talk” which means me listening to her, blaming herself for my dad’s death (recall that he had a massiive heart attack after a pleasant birthday lunch, but yes, there are scores of things she thinks she could have done), listening to her opinions on everything, many of which are wildly inconsistent. I learned that on this beach trip I said I take Mom and her friend on, that the friend thinks we’re going to drive. Yes, somehow I will get myself to Illinois to pick up Mom, then drive to Indiana to pick up her friend, then drive to Florida, then reverse it a few days later. I mean, the bathroom breaks alone would take up all of my vacation time!
In more interesting news, I just found out that the D of one of my friends from work is a bona fide debutante…the ball was Saturday…with the white dresses and long white gloves and deep curtsey (to whom are they curtseying, as we have neither king nor queen?), the men in white tie with sashes across their chests (symbolizing what?)…it is just so fascinating! What a different world! Were any of your Ds debutantes?
