Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Sending you a virtual hug, MP.

I couldn’t really braid or do the ballerina bun - luckily D figured it out on her own (bun) or found people (French braids).

shawbridge, hope you get better soon.

Having my own health care frustrations. Decided it was time to find a local primary care physician, since I’ve been calling my former doctor for prescription refills. Went to our insurance website to look for a primary care physician near by. Checked the box so only those accepting patients would show up. The first several I called from the resulting list said they were not primary care physicians/not accepting patients.

I finally found one and had an appointment. I think I was the only native English speaker there. Some of the staff did not speak English and it was hard to communicate. I received some referrals and when I called the phone numbers on the referrals, none of them were correct (right place, wrong department/person). Now I’ve been navigating the referring hospital website and their posted phone numbers are different but also not correct. I’ve managed to schedule two of the three appointments I need, but it’s been a major ordeal. Not really thrilled with the primary care doctor, either, but it was so much effort to find someone.

NM, have fun in Chicago and say hi to my D!

Enjoying the warmer weather today, although all the snow melting on the city streets has uncovered lots of disgusting trash, which my dog seems to like to pick up in his mouth. Yuck!

Found a NY Times article describing the phenomena:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/11/nyregion/the-snow-is-melting-but-what-a-mess-it-left-behind.html?_r=0

That artcle was both funny and sad! I so don’t get the whole littering thing. Its always amazing to me. When I was a kid in Ontario, they had big PSAs against littering all the time (Keep it Beautiful, Don’t be a Litterbug, etc.) and it seemed to work because I will chase a scrap that gets away from me in the wind for a city block or feel like a criminal.

When I first moved here, I found myself constantly picking up abandoned candy wrappers and pop cans in search of public garbage. Folks thought I was odd ;)… and comparatively, my city has a rep for being neat-nick-ish

I love my commercial landlords downtown though. Yesterday morning they had the maintenance guy out front of the building our studio is in spraying down the sidewalk with a hose. I am not particularly tidy myself but I love the Dutch-flavored habits in our city of cleaning things, restoring things, and renovating/re-using beautiful old buildings. We don’t tear much down in these parts, but we repurpose a lot, and as a result, we have a lot of beautiful LEEDS
architecture that gives the city a vibrant character.

Missy, sending you virtual hugs!

Feeling better this morning. Spent quite a while on the treadmill last night. I know that exercise is helpful but hard to make myself get out of the house after a long day.

And thank you everyone for the virtual hugs.

Still fighting this cold. Hoping it is gone so my ears are ok for the flight. Had my hair “color enhanced” yesterday. I hate aging. Anyone have a good OTC retinol cream? I want to try one before I I turn to prescription strength.

missy…I so hope things are getting better for you at work.

Might hit 70 today! Most of the snow has melted and there are just a few small patches along the driveway where the snowblower piled snow all winter. Everything is so brown and I am hoping we don’t get a March snow storm.

H and I are going to Florida in May. Got the plane tickets last night. Yay!

I have prescription strength retinal cream ( supplied by my mother). I can never get past the part where my skin flakes off. The directions say to stick with it and your skin will get used to it but I’ve never made it past that point. So I will just keep aging…

Glad you’re feeling better, MP.

NM I have started using ROC retinol. It reasonably priced, we’ll see if it works! I’ve been thinking about doing a bit of botox or fillers for the wedding.

I haven’t used the Renova in years, but back when I did, the derm suggested starting by mixing half a pea-sized dab of it with some good moisturizer, and using it that way every other day for a week or two, upping the frequency until it was daily, and not going to pure Renova until you could used the blended stuff with no bad reactions every day.

Such a pleasure to have warm weather. Aaah. Rain tomorrow, but that is ok. The crocus (crocuses?) are blooming, and I’m looking forward to seeing fawns soon.

NorthMin, have a nice time in Chicago. If you like Mexican but don’t make it to Frontera Grill, you can visit the food court at Macys for the chef’s simpler creations. It’s wonderful food! Macy’s Seven on State - http://www.fronterafresco.com/locations.php

Virtual hugs to all!

And on the way you’ll be treated to a glimpse of what big city department stores USED to look like!

^^^^ Yes, that’s a great Macy’s; so many cool architectural details. It used to be a Marshall Field’s.

Return to the deep freeze today – currently 18 degrees; feels like 6 degrees. H is off with the car all day, so I think I’ll hop the T downtown. Cold or not, I feel a need to get out and about, with perhaps a little shopping on the side. What does one wear to an Engagement Party at a country club?

On the warm side, we just booked another trip to FL for a week right after Easter. I was surprised when H suggested it since I figured he’d be all about working on the boat to get it ready to launch in May. But, there’s still a lot of snow in RI and I guess he figured he wouldn’t be starting any work at the beginning of April.

CBB- I think the party calls for a new dress!

Hi treetopleaf.

I love that Fields/Macys!

FallGirl – thanks for the “permission.” I got 2 dresses, a suit jacket (vs an outdoor one) and a sweater for < $140.00. So many sales + so many coupons = so many good deals.

Good morning!
The thaw continues in these parts - hope the same is true for the rest of you!

We had sweatlodge yesterday, which was awesome. Unfortunately, I slipped on the mucky hill and threw my back out a bit. Lots of hot-tubbing and Aleve though had made it seem somewhat better this morning.

I appear to have a wild turkey this a.m. hanging out up by the lodge. He’s pretty noisy! Doesn’t seem to realize the other birds aren’t really interested in singing with him. Hilarious to listen to while soaking!

Today I’m looking forward to hearing how mcson’s dinner went last night. He was meeting new gf’s family after they drove about 20 hours for a visit

If the relationship easily survives a 20 hour road trip, that is a good sign!

Is that fast for a merry the parents trip?

The thaw is on here as well though ostensibly we will have snow in the afternoon and a cooler week.

ShawSon is taking finals this week. Apparently he has been exercising 2 hours (probably a combo of basketball and the gym) a day to relieve stress but he had been going out with young women from the online dating site. According to his best friend’s mother (he hasn’t mentioned this to us), there are two women per weekend but the same two women. In my limited experience in this domain, 2 is a bad number – 1 and many work but 2 is more likely to lead to unhappiness. The way this site was serving people up to him, he seemed to be getting Asians and Jews. Curious to find out who he is dating. He said he had 2 dates and exercise, tons of work and very little sleep and absolutely nothing else. We will see him next weekend where I expect he will sleep for the better part of 48 hours.

Lol Missy and Shaw. Let me phrase that better. The parents drove 20 hours to visit their D (mcSon’s gf) who is a college student in our city. Though Missy, they have discussed making the trip together this summer

Shaw, I know you meant “meet” the parents but I love that it came out “merry”, (Close psychic cousin to marry) – but yes, it’s early days for all that and they did it nonetheless.

Though gf said it was “criminally awkward” because her family is “extremely introverted” she said mcson was “charming and they loved him” So, a merry meet in all!

(They came over for dinner last night to debrief.)

Shaw, I agree that two is double trouble…but am happy to hear Shawson is having some kind of “work/life balance.”

Last night I watched the move “Whiplash” – story about an obsessed drummer at an imaginary conservatory in a cruel relationship with mentor. And that, my friends, is while I’ll never be a great jazz drummer! (I actually did try to pick up the drums a few years back…not that wild of a stretch as i used to play bass. I’m ok on 4/4 but could never get the messed up time signature of a song like Whiplash!)

Things sound good with mcS and gf. Love the “criminally awkward” description.

S arrives home tonight after working a little over a week in Central America on Alternative Spring Break (his break is 2 weeks long). Looking forward to seeing and actually talking with him as he has never been a phone person.

I got hockey tickets from work so yesterday H and I met some long time friends for dinner before the game. I enjoy watching hockey as it moves fast and keeps my attention. Ran into a few co workers in my company’s suite. And found out through the magic of Facebook that countingdown was also at the game!

Wish me luck…once rush hour traffic clears out I am going to go to the drivers license bureau to try to get my name changed. I have an unfortunate first name that I never use…except that it’s still listed on my DL…which means that I have to book domestic plane tickets using that name (but not international because the names I go by are on my passport.) I looked into getting TSA Pre for real (the kind you pay for) but all your ID must match. With TX voter ID laws, I have trouble voting now because neither my DL nor my passport match my voter reg card exactly. Which also means I am called for jury duty twice as often. Although mine is a first name issue, I imagine that lots of married women end up with a similar issue…upon marriage, you end up with 4 names and unless you are consistent from the beginning with which 2, 3 or 4 you use, the problems compound.
