Shaw, we are taking a road trip up to D’s graduation in June. On the way home, I want to stop in Memphis. I’ve never really seen the sights of Memphis or eaten the bbq or heard the music.
MP, we didn’t get to it but people told us Central Kitchen was good.
Leaving in 7.5 hours for our trip to Italy. At that point where I am unpacking. I have more things than clothes.
Spent 2 hours in the dentist chair for an emergency but my fabulous dentist (and thank you dear fairies that I managed to get with my own dentist which is a miracle given it is an HMO) fixed all. Last p.m. I had been looking at cancelling our flight and rebooking and hoping to still get to Italy.
So the refig is cleaned out and the damp towel H threw down the shute retreived and drying. The microwave he cooked something stinky in has been purged with a vinegar and water boil.
I am sure I will check in and fingers crossed for good weather.
The house seems empty with out “D’s” dog who somehow has become ours.
MP, we will be in the apt. in Florence that you rec. in a few weeks. Looking very much forward to Florence.
I have been two times in the 70"s, living there for 3 months once. left with a one way ticket and $300.
A life changing experience.
Happy trails Oregon!
Quiet week around here as it is spring break and it seems the regular cabal of clientele are vacationing. I will make the most of the comparative quiet to get caught up
I hope you have a wonderful trip, oregon101! Wishing you and your H good health.
I was in Memphis in January for several days on business. Ate lunch twice at Central BBQ, had a location near our client. I also flew in/out of Memphis a few weeks ago (client was in Mississippi) and after the first trip S had urged me to get Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. The chicken was fabulous but I wasn’t wild about their baked beans. I was going to get S a t-shirt, but they only had pink left in his size. I’m going back next week (same client in Mississippi, flying in/out of Memphis) so I may try again.
Have I mentioned it’s a struggle to eat healthy while traveling? Too many regional cuisines to sample.
shawbridge, while in Memphis in January I re-connected with a childhood friend who lives there. Her children all attended a private school there - one is still in HS. I wonder if it’s the same school? Her D is the same age as my S (junior in college) and is at George Washington.
Bon voyage, oregon101!
Have a wonderful trip oregon!!! Enjoy the adventure.
I am still struggling with starting our floor remodel. Silly me thought I just needed a flooring company to come in and demo the old tile floor and replace it with hardwood. Not the case since the flooring companies won’t move the 6 x 6 island that has granite on it. I need a stone company to lift the granite,an electrician to disconnect the electricity in the island and a cabinet maker to move the island and then a carpenter to replace door casings that will now be too short and can’t be covered with shoe moulding. Also need someone to move out the refrigerator, washer and dryer since H can’t do it after his back surgery. I am now thinking I need to hire a contractor to take care of it. Have some research to do to find someone reputable. sigh…
Sitting in the United Club before my return flight. I am exhausted. Did not sleep well ( I stayed at my parents house). And overall it was very emotionally draining. MIL asked me to read a poem written by H’s sister at the viewing and the readings at the funeral service. I am good at public speaking so I was at least greatful that I was able to share this gift. It did require that I stay composed which was hard. As I mentioned my FIL was one of those guys who really was good and so loved by all.
H is not returning until the weekend so I will have a few days to catch up at home and at work.
{{{Hugs}}} to you FallGirl. Thinking of you.
Thank you for the great recommendations for Memphis!
I want to go back to Florence! Have a great trip.
Be good to yourself Fallgirl.
I hope you can get some sleep tonight, FallGirl. Your FIL sounds like he was a joy.
Safe travels, Oregon!
Have a great trip, Oregon.
Very sorry to hear about your FIL, FallGirl.
ShawD’s uncle decided to give her a bunch of doctorly advice. He thought she should work for a few years as a nurse in a hospital before doing her NP degree. That seems to be a view that a lot of people hold, but ShawD has talked to a number of NPs who say that a lot of the bedside nursing experience didn’t translate that well to their NP work. One of her professors did something similar to ShawD and said it has not been a handicap. In ShawD’s new job at the school, in addition to giving meds, kids will come to her if they are not feeling well. Probably more like a Family Practice NP role than a nurse on a surgical floor. woody and DTE, does that sound right to you?
But, she says she wants to work part-time and go to school part-time and split the last year of school into two years. She has been going to school without summer breaks for four years and with the part-time job, she says she has no real life other than school and work. I said fine. She’s not in a rush. On the current plan she’d be 22 when she graduated as an FNP and turn 23 thereafter. She could finish a year later with no ill effects on her life. After she graduates, she wants to go to an ashram in Nepal and do karma yoga and then travel on her own to Southeast Asia before she starts her next job.
Sounds wonderful! And a well earned break for her.
Hope your’e have a good time in Italy, oregon.
I am getting back on track, Had a productive day at work yesterday and then went to yoga for the first time in 2 weeks. I am not sore today which is a surprise. H will be back tomorrow and he wants to go to euchre group tomorrow night.
Has she traveled to India/Nepal/Southeast Asia before? It’s been several years for me, but I’m not sure I’d want my D going there alone.I fully support her working part-time, attending school part-time, and taking a break. But maybe she can find a traveling companion?
Had some snow last night but most of it has melted. Crazy spring weather! Heading to the lake today. Hoping the ice has melted off of the lake. Still trying to find a contractor who will tackle our “small” project.
Shaw…your D’s plan sounds reasonable. It’s a journey, not a sprint!
D1 continues to do well professionally. Can’t remember if I mentioned that she set a meeting with her supervisor and presented her reasons for why she should get a raise. The supervisor agreed so D1 is happy.
D2 is approaching the end of busy season and is hoping to get some rest and relaxation. Her mentor met her for coffee yesterday and told her she will have her pick of areas to specialize in. D1 said several partners have added lunch meetings to her calendar over the next week to talk with her about considering their specialized areas. Of course D2 says she dislikes the attention. Should be an interesting process.
Yes, sounds like an interesting plan but a traveling companion would seem like a good idea if she can find someone to go with her. But if not, I’m guessing you have taught her all the safety precautions with travel.
Glad you’re getting back on track, FallGirl.
Have fun at the lake, NM.
My husband and I are seeing Rosanne Cash in concert this weekend. It was initially his idea but I’m getting excited about it. Hope everyone has a nice weekend!
I just made reservations for S’s graduation in May 2016. The hotel said they were about half full already.
S spent this past week on spring break in Amsterdam. He said it was his favorite place so far.
D has been put in charge of her company’s Twitter account. She also recently met Spike Lee and the CEO of McDonald’s.
Aren’t you sick of snow, NM? Today’s forecast was supposed to be warm-ish, but I think they got the forecast wrong. Just broke 50 degrees (forecast was mid 60s). I’m traveling to warmer locations the next two weeks.
Congrats on D1’s raise, and D2’s opportunities, NM!
FallGirl, hope you are getting rest from your trip. Glad you could contribute to the service for your FIL.
Ready for the weekend. I need to finish up our taxes. Ugh. This should be my last FAFSA.
^ I will have to remember to book early for May 2018
c_q your D sounds like she has a great job.
Our department was allowed to leave early today, so I stopped by the carwash which was on the to do list. Started cleaning out my closet for the annual rummage sale at church.
Heading out to Southern California next week, so crazy busy with work this week, and it looks to be the same right through Sunday evening. Ugh.
c_q – so nice that your d’s job is turning out so well. My D is settling into life in Manhattan.
Carwash…that’s a concept I need to pursue, FallGirl. And soon.
Great to hear about your d’s job, c-q.
I got in late last night from London to a household of delightful relatives (MIL and her companion, two a niece and nephew and their SO’s) here for our niece’s Bat Mitzvah (and a belated Seder). I am leaving Sunday afternoon for a meeting and then a flight to Germany.
I was so looking forward to swapping the rental VW Jetta my car insurance company gave me for the 6 weeks it has taken for them to finally complete the body work on my BMW. But, they are close Saturday and Sunday. I’m so disappointed. I’m going to impose on either my sister or my wife to pick it up.
