Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

C-q, now you are able to express an opinion on the issue to others! You’re almost a native.

I’m going to be traveling the next 5 weekends. Only one (the Florida wedding) really for fun. It was going to be 4 weekends in a row, and I was looking forward to Labor Day weekend to “prepare” (and finish my taxes!) But my uncle has passed away (87) and now I’m spending the weekend flying to my mom’s to drive her 5 hours to the funeral. It’s my Dad’s side of the family, but my mom likes them better then her own.

C-q, Shaw and others who travel a lot, if you have tips on keeping me healthy and sane, let me know.

Today is our work practice group’s “retreat”…meaning we sit in a conference room for 7 hours. Seems like if you call it a retreat, you should at least get t-shirts.

Have a great day, everyone.

I just had a banner ad for the apartment complex at younger D’s school that wasn’t complete when school started and had to put everyone in temporary housing. (She’s hoping to move in by the end of September.)

We have a guy newer than me who seems to get very stressed by the travel. Delays really don’t upset me, I figure if I get there safely eventually it’s all good.

Hi All! Got home yesterday from the lake and now heading back in a few hours. Have to meet the contractor to fix a small roof leak. Seriously…how can a brand new roof have a leak.??? They are putting new flashing on around the porch peaks where they think the problem is. Also having issues with the Trex decking. Why can’t manufacturers have quality products!!! Thankfully our contractor is wonderful and stands behind his work.

I have no internet at the lake for my computer but will try to check in her on my phone. Wish me luck! If not I am wishing everyone a great Labor Day weekend! Enjoy the end of your summer!

I don’t take the buses very often as they hurt my knees (distance between the seats is too short). Amtrak is usually pretty good, but can have small or typically large delays when they have delays. I work on the train – beats plane and bus – so I usually don’t mind the delays.

I don’t usually let delays bother me. But, I also travel differently. I use airline lounges whenever possible. That really helps with sanity. Plus, I’m often elite on airlines and hotels and they treat me nicely (helps generally). Mostly I use travel time to work and thus don’t object to delays.

I only mind delays when I miss my next flight. On Wednesday I’m off to a conference in Turkey, and stop twice on the way (oh the joys of flying from the west coast). I have an upgrade all the way (first/business), which helps enormously as Shaw said (and I’ve scoped out where the good lounges are), but if I miss the connection in Germany it will really complicate getting to my final destination. Still, I’d rather be stranded in Germany than elsewhere. I’m not even sure why I said I’d go: a lot of travel for a relatively short conference; but it’s with folks I don’t get to talk with often in the States. I keep muttering that I’m going to cancel, but H says “you always say that, but you’ll go and enjoy it.”

hope all of you travelers have had reasonable trips!.

D and BF are still here. Have no idea which emotican I want. He is a good person, talks tons, can do a hike without jabber. D is sold on him 100% and so that is all ok. Not unhappy to think of just H and I alone in a few days, just saying.

So if he is the one I am good. The one I really want is our “2nd D’s” (just a girl who became ours as her parents were not present) H. He is my perfect SIL. But this is a good second. So we shall see.

Taking furniture up to S and DIL and it will be a grueling trip. As you might remember, her parents planned on taking them out for dinner after her medical school white coat ceremony and I boldly asked if we could join them (at our expense).

As I completely knew would happen, they have begged off
from taking her out (never mind us) as they are leaving for a weekend trip just after.
So if we were not attending and staying in the city and taking them to dinner what would have happened
for her??
When we went to D’s we met up with her friends family’s for drinks and a super fancy meal.
Sigh.
She is so appreciative and lovely. I mentioned that D said that their early marriage and child was the best thing that
ever happened to S. She replied,“and to me”. We then went on to talk about how her classmates may be her age
but they have not lived her life…
Gads, I am lucky to have her.

Oregon, you are the best MIL ever.

^ what mp said.

And your DIL sounds wonderful too.

Thanks,I think I was a little meloncholy last night (maybe the beverage 8-| ).

We’re back from our hiking/canoeing/leaf peeping trip up to the high country. And yes, the aspen are just starting to turn. (Cue the deep voice, “Winter comes early in the high country.”) Came home to find that the neighbor’s kids had twice been chased inside from their lemonade stand due to the bear coming over to check. They abandoned the lemonade. I visited the reopened stand yesterday and handed over my quarter for a cup. The three year old has quite a future in business: when I asked how much the lemonade was, he confidently said, “Three dollars.” I think they must go to Starbucks a little too often.

yay Tom Brady won his appeal! I am sure you all are so happy, sarcasm here!
Got back Tues from South Africa. We were in Capetown and a reserve three hours out of capetown. Loved it all. learned a lot about that part of the world. Loved seeing my daughter and her friend. The weather was perfect, as it is the end of winter/spring/ if you want a great holiday go there although the flight is long. the exchange rate is very favorable. We tasted great wines, paired with chocolate and of course beer. I like the new cider . Tried crocodile, warthog, ostrich, and other bits. The trip there as not so good. The flight was delayed 17 hours, making us miss our connection, a day of our trip, and two nights sleep instead of one. We had to be in London for 8 hours, they would not let us (the riffraff) use the lounge. so he hung around for 8 hours as we were worried we wouldn’t get back from London We were given food vouchers. . We did sleep in business class as the plane had only 6o passengers, but were not allowed the business dinner or breakfast. The next leg of the journey to capetown, I helped the stewardess with a passenger that passed out, and then had an allergic reaction to the food of which I requested and received benadryl with effect. Of course our luggage was lost. Just for a day. On the way home we lost our seats as the computer thought we were a no show on the first flight (that was delayed) we didn’t check in ahead of time which might have alleviated this but we never do, lesson learned. I was quite annoyed at the Oh well our mistake you lose attitude. But apart from that our accomodations at a 5 star hotel were amazing and we stayed at a 5 star tented lodge for safari. I got to see my girl and we arrived home safe. although I still cant sleep.
Started school yesterday, working all weekend back to the real world.!!!.

Welcome Home!!! What a wonderful trip–aside from the flights! Wow, hope your allergic reaction was not too scary.
Did you get decent seats on the way back? Which airlines.
Glad to know about the weather. H has been but wants to return and I do not handle heat well. In fact, just bowed out of a trip for a wedding invite to Southern India. It would be fabulous and horrid so the heat won.

D and dog and BF left this a.m. and H and I leave soon to take furniture 5 hours north.
This is going to be a long day but at least the sun is shining.
Back on Saturday. The dog feels very much here–almost eerily (sp?) so.

Great too hear about the terrific vacations. Sounds like disruptive travel, DTE. Never fun.

I’ve been in London this week with one of my colleagues. We may have just gotten 2 new engagements with the same client. Now on to Dublin for the weekend. Any suggestions?. Then Frankfurt. Then san Francisco to help ShawSon move in. I think we scared away the GF – I think she decided to take a trip because we were coming.

I thought the Brady outcome was highly likely. No evidence, no due process, nothing but a claim that the judge needed to defer to the commissioner. Not likely to fly in most courts.

Shaw most people outside of NE hate the Patriots so decide they should be punished and Tom Brady as well, but you hit the nail on the head that it wouldn’t fly in court a thing most people forget.

Welcome back dte. Sounds like a great trip except for the flights. Maybe I’ll put South Africa on the “someday travel wish list”.

Hello all! Playing catch-up on everyone’s posts – travels, adventures, jobs, kids, etc.

We were in Chicago last weekend (Thurs - Mon) for a wedding. We stayed downtown for 2 nights and then stayed 2 nights near the Chicago Botanic Garden, which is where the wedding was. Since we’d seen most of the downtown sites on previous visits, we branched out a little this time – architecture tour by boat, a blues club, Lincoln Park Zoo, a jazz concert at Millennium Park. On our way up to the Botanic Garden we stopped at the IL Holocaust Museum in Skokie. Sobering subject done very well. The wedding Saturday evening was lovely, in spite of some light rain during the outdoor ceremony. The next day we went back to the Garden to actually see it, and that night went to see Santana at Ravinia, an outdoor concert venue similar to Tanglewood in MA.

The wedding was of the son of some long-time friends. We met them for coffee on Sunday afternoon before the concert so we could catch up. They mentioned they were starting to plan a trip to Spain in late October – and then said, “Why not come with us?” H and I looked at each other and said, “Sure!” So, all the basic plans are done. We’ve never traveled with another couple, so it should be fun.

In sadder news, about 2 weeks ago D texted me that she had just found out that one of her HS classmates had died. (D attended an all girls private school; 52 in her graduating class.) The classmate was one of the 2 women who fell to their death while climbing in the Tetons. So horribly sad. There will be a memorial service at the school in a few weeks; D and I will go together.

We are picking up my car today. The repairs were through the roof expensive. I guess that’s why we have insurance …

Enjoy the long weekend everyone! Hard to believe summer is over.

PS Oh yeah, dte – celebrating the Brady win! Of course it’s not over since the NFL is going to appeal – which is really just Godell trying to save face.

CBBBlinker, Chicago and the wedding sound lovely. We are going to a wedding in a couple of weeks too of a guy that S! has known since kindergarten (and we have known the parents since then as well since they lived right behind us). But the bride is from the next town over so no major travel involved.

So sorry though to hear of the death of one of your D’s classmates, So tragic.

I’m sorry to hear about the death, CBB. Such a sadness. However, the spontaneous Spain trip sounds like a blast.

Bear, Round 2: I’ve had the tree trimming folks here for two days now, and I warned them about the bear visits the past few days. One of the guys piped up, “We’ve got hardhats and chainsaws, so it won’t be a problem.” I guess that is right. Never thought about it that way before. Hmmm…

Good morning, all! Hope you’re having enjoyable and possibly relaxing weekends!

CBB, I love Spain…you’ll have a blast!
Arabrab, you carry bear spray these days, right?

I am staying out of trouble this weekend for a change after last week’s party and 3 nights out this week at various dinners and functions…exhausted! Nothing more decadent than a massage and pool time planned.

I teetered on the brink of a project – was going to buy a salt-water generator for my pool yesterday and had considered self-installing…but given that I’m a klutz, I’ve decided to wait til spring when hopefully hubby’s arm is healed. He got the sling off Wed. But is not supposed to lift anything heavier than a mug for this next month – supposed to be a 4-month rehab so I’m still point person on DIY and home maintenance jobs

Grand-kitty is here for a visit and I’m hoping to hone his chipmunk-killing instincts  The little buggers have been drinking out of his outdoor water container, so hopefully he’ll feel territorial about that!

He’s so adorable…and its so cute to see mcson and gf dote on him  They’re hilariously protective and thoughtful parental types, and should they ever have children, I can see same will be both well-loved and well-schooled.

Grandkitty already walks on a leash, comes when called, and generally, takes the “no!” Easier to accomplish with a Siamese, but always a miracle with a cat!

Gf has started classes and found a p/t job she really likes at a woman-owned arty tattoo parlor (sounds like an oxymoron.) They love her artwork and she’s apprenticing.

While I’m personally no fan of tattoos, I respect the fact that she’s found something where she actually gets to use her illustration skills. We both think its a bit funny and ironic since mcson literally faints at needles…At least I know she wont be using him as a canvas

She’s a sweetheart…drew me a beautiful pic of grand-kitty as a thank-you for helping them out…made this renaissance style halo behind him filled with purple coneflowers inspired by my garden. Such a talent!

Happy trails and sending wishes for a labor-free Labor Day weekend  Cheers!
