Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

NM, the florist was surprised that she didn’t have a Pinterest board.

I am somewhat dreading the flower/decorating discussion if and when it comes up with D, because I don’t care, and I have no decorating sense.

dte – yes, I remember. It turns out our D knows that bride’s husband from camp, and our D has been in email contact with the bride. (But is she still at your work place? I was thinking our D said she was someplace else now?) We may end up using the same photographer.

Kudos to shaw and RM on the weight loss! I’m back at it after having gained several too many pounds over the holidays. The good news is H is also on board.

And shaw – looking forward to your reports on houseboat living! How long are you out there?

CBBB. we will be out there for about 2.5 months. I will of course have to make three trips to Europe during that period, but what’s new.

CBB she is in school now.

I think because she did not leave for another job, and that I see pics of her form time to time on FB I don’t think of her as gone.

Rant warning!

So I sent S an email regarding internships and gave him a few suggestions based on what he is studying and wants to do and he claims that he can’t apply because 1. He is not a sophomore and 2. He goes to school in another country. I told him to apply anyway because this is his second year of college, he has some experience in an unpaid activity he is doing at school and his background might make him stand out a little bit. Besides he has nothing to lose by applying, right. He was already been told that if he does not get an internship this summer he will be working at a job doing whatever. He will not be traveling, taking classes or loafing on our dollar. In addition he was not in a very pleasant mood the entire 2 weeks he was at home. I am annoyed.

FallGirl, I understand your frustration. There was a good kid we know from church who graduated from a strong state school a couple of years ago. Every summer he came back and lifeguarded at the pool at which he had worked in high school…good money, lots of hours. When he started looking for his “real job”, for some reason he was surprised that the prospective employers wanted to see internships/jobs related to his field on his resume. I know that some students can’t afford to take unpaid internships, but this kid seemed to have a disconnect with the entire idea of building a resume.

That was my D as well. Didn’t matter what I said she graduated from (gasp) Bates College with no REAL job experience. She had tutored at school and had watched two older kids during her summers. No real work experience however. Now she was LUCKY in that she did find a job locally with in 4 months of graduating and no she really didn’t look until after graduation - or very little looking. Not sure what she thought was going to happen. I will say that one place she applied to was very interested in her and she blew them off prior to graduation because she didn’t want to move. I get that but STILL!!! What if things hadn’t worked out. Was she planning on just living off of us? Not happening! In her case it did work out. They like her where she is working and she has had a couple of good raises in the last 2 years but I don’t think she is the norm.

RM that does make me feel somewhat better. Mp at this point I would be happy if S was willing to lifeguard. He needs to do something this summer to get some experience or make money ( both would be preferable). I don’t want him sitting around doing nothing.

Hey DTE! Congrats on the DNP acceptance. A few years back I applied to a DNP program at the university where I do the online RN to BSN classes.
I was accepted but then found out that they offered no tuition reimbursement to adjunct faculty. Although it was a requirement to continue teaching, I said no thanks. I couldn’t see paying them $45K/year x2 so they could pay me half that as an adjunct.
That said, I have taught continuously for several years. I love teaching. (Brag alert!) I am an expert in my field and I get insanely great student evaluations. (It makes me wonder what the heck the rest of the teachers do.) Some of my motivation lies in the fact that these students get very little tuition reimbursement and pay huge amounts in tuition for a degree that they did not necessarily bargain for when starting out. I am committed to giving them the best I have.
Sooo, if you like the teaching aspect of nursing, scout around for some programs that can be taught with an MSN.

So sorry, Fallgirl. We were pretty clear from high school years on that our kids were expected to work in the summers and during college (summer only although one kid TA’ed undergrad during college by choice). They did manual stuff, surveying, interesting stuff, internships but they always worked. Maybe he needs more of a stake in things? Job, loan, work study, etc?

Good Morning. Still fighting this awful illness. Now have bronchitis. I rarely get sick so this has thrown me for a loop.
.
Thinking of you FallGirl! I am sure it will all work out for him.

Now I am going to sit in a steaming shower!

Ugh NM! I still have a runny nose but do feel better. Have not been to the gym since Tues. Something had to give as I didn’t feel 100% (or even 50%). Stayed home from work on Wed. and the extra sleep seemed to help. Mine though stayed in my head - thank goodness!! Hope you feel better. Looking forward to the weekend. GS turns 1 today so we will have a little family party tonight with takeout at S and DILs house! Looking forward to it.

So sorry you are not feeling well. I was so afraid that I would catch something by spending so much time at the hospital.

The DNP is a sort of hybrid program. I looked at getting a DNP another way and it was not cost effective etc… especially at my age. I am second thinking it because I feel that the money although considerably less might better be put toward my daughter’s law school education.

NM & RM – Hope you start feeling much better very soon.

MP – Hope you are recovering from hell week. (Two weeks?)

H’s new employer is again proving the adage that one something get mucked up, every attempt to fix it will introduce other problems. We are on week 3 of trying to get the insurance straightened out. First neither of us was covered, then he was covered, then I was covered, but only as of 1/1/16, then I got covered back through December, and today we’re at he’s covered for Dental back through December and I’m not. Luckily we’ve been seeing the same dentist for 25+ years, and the office says to not sweat it.

Just lost my post…

I hope you get the insurance thing straightened out soon, arabrab. I am currently not able to get my bp meds(thankfully I am only borderline) refilled as my insurance now requires a 90 day script and mine is not written that way. Have spent a week talking to my Dr’s office and CVS and will be calling again on Monday.

Am not sure what gives with S. A month ago he was eager to apply to internships. He worked on campus last year and as I mentioned he is doing an activity which is like an unpaid type of internship that should help him stand out. H sent him an email with attachments showing the qualifications for some internships ans he is very qualified. Not saying he would be chosen, but he has every reason to apply.

Was planning to be at work today for quarter end close, but we did not have to go in. I have my laptop here at home in case I get a text from my boss. So this feels like a bonus day to me.

Sorry about all the insurance issues.

FallGirl, Your son sounds like he has been doing lots of things right so likely he will figure it out eventually . Good luck to him in getting something lined up for the summer, either an internship or some type of job.

Well. We’ve arrived. We’re on the houseboat. This is going to be cool. Alas, all the restaurants seem to be close as it is after 11. Fortunately, we know the neighbor on one side.
