Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

kmc, New to D’s area, but part of a national network/“chain” of schools. So it’s probably legit, but location would make big difference to D, because of the commute she’d have.

The school where she is doing her year-long teacher training/apprenticeship does have openings. She’s applied, and would rather stay there. She knows she is well liked by the staff and administration, but the competition is stiff. At what point does she ask about her status or tell them she’s getting other interviews?

That’s sort of a tough one Z…personally I’d wait until another offer, and then tell them she has another offer that she needs to respond to but they would be her first choice. BUT that doesn’t give them much time. Maybe if she’s short-listed, it might be suitable to say something along the lines of “what is your time frame for making a selection…I’ve had the good fortune of being short listed for another position, but my first choice would be here.”

I could be all wet on that, though, as its been almost two decades since since I’ve been anything other than an employer. My last “trade” had been in the news business and across papers owned by the same company, so I’d been upfront about applying for the last position in the first place to avoid any awkwardness between the editors…which sounds a bit crazy, but its an incestuous business, and the position was senior, so he kinda had to support it. That didn’t stop him from making a later play for me to come back to a more senior position, which totally ticked off my new editor (because he didn’t actually ask per se, told him he wanted me back for x position before even talking to ME, and just assumed I’d want it, but hadn’t realized I was up for the M.E. position and my cuurent M.E. was moving to publisher…which was right about the time I decided to put away the pen entirely

I have had an employee who was half time with me receive a FT offer from her other half time employer. I would have loved to have kept her and made room for full time (she’d had the other half time job first, and in fact, I’d recommended she apply there when she was first job hunting.)

II did think the other job, though, was actually very good for her career with a lot of exposure (it was as an editor of a strong community magazine) and told her so. She told me if she planned to stay in this city, she’d rather stay with us, but that because she knew she’d leave in a year or two, she felt she should take the offer, which made sense to me.

At any rate, I will keep my fingers crossed for your D and for some offer serendipity

Shaw, I’m not surprised you’re tired because I’m tired for you when I read about your travels  I’m sure your travels are extremely fruitful, and I’ve no doubt they want you onsite…but just remember you can say no now and then or groom an up n comer to pitch hit a bit! I realize that’s both a tough call and a delicate balance when you’re the rainmaker…

Back from a quick trip to see S’s last choir concert. Left at lunch time Friday and had LOTS of traffic.Drive home yesterday after the concert was quicker and without incident, thankfully. If you only count time awake, we spent more time driving there than being there.

Cooler weather up there. S said once it hit 60, everyone broke out the shorts and sandals.

S took us to the best place in his town for lobster rolls. It’s at a convenience store, and we dined-in (very classy). The lobster traps were outside and the lobster is freshly caught each day. They were fabulous!

That sounds like a fun trip, @college_query! Any lobster rolls you can recommend in NYC? I’ve heard of Red Hook but it seems like quite a hike from Manhattan.

@arabrab - I haven’t had lobster rolls in NYC; I associate them more with Boston/Cape Cod and Maine! So nothing I can recommend personally, although in addition to Red Hook, there are lots of favorable reviews for Luke’s Lobster, and it has lots of locations.

Wedding planning - ugh!

So the venue that I really want them to like is already leaving a bitter taste in their mouths because they called and left a message but the people haven’t called them back. I reached out to them again this morning. We’ll see if they contact me. Really would prefer that to the other venue they are looking at – which is just a venue. Would need to find a caterer, figure out the whole liquor thing ourselves, get insurance, etc. etc. Which in my mind means more work for me! Much prefer a place with a wedding planner that can just do it all - yes I might pay a bit more but I think the stress will be less!!

GD is doing well and GS is okay with her although he keeps trying to climb over her. S is exhausted. He is not good with little sleep. DIL seems fine however so at least one adult in the house is on target. They have someone coming today to give them an estimate on a new roof. Oh the joys of home ownership.

So I posted something innocently on FB my mother and sister got mad and went crazy because they didn’t agree. They always get mad when people don’t agree with them. I never say anything to my mother but just had enough. Said they censor people with their reactions and cant see that its not a personal affront when people don’t agree with them so my mother defriended me. I hate face book really and just want to go off it. I hate crazy families too. Just exhausting

Crazy family stuff can be exhausting! With five sisters I have experienced it all!

Heading to the lake in a bit. Ready for some relaxation. We have had cool, rainy weather for a week but now the sun is shining! Hooray!

I do not have contact with many members of my family. I was always on edge and anxious in the past
with them and have not missed them at all. It took time but I even got over the guilt.

D has left (again) after 6 months of living here. I keep thinking I hear her drive up. It was nice and then
some days I felt crowded. Am sure I will miss her. That said she texted with many questions as to why her
battery would not start. I asked if there was liquid in the cells–she had no idea but there was not. Fortunately it
was still under warranty. Now there is a thump from a back wheel. Told her to look for an animal in the wheel well.
Probably not enough air–sitting for 6 months. She needs it to last for one more year but I have my doubts.

S and DIL and G’S will arrive tomorrow. He wants spaghetti, mashed potatoes and ice cream.

Hugs, dte.

Have fun with your GS, oregon!

I thought I would not be so busy at this point in my life, but S was just here the last few weeks (when he wasn’t traveling a bit). It is almost certain that he will go back “across the pond” next year. I loved the school he attended last year, but career wise he has some things going over there that might work better in the long run.

I am loving my running program, but it takes time, still practicing yoga 3-4 x /week, too. And I had a few social event this week too. Heading into another busy week and hoping it’s not like the last two.

Oregon, love GS’s diet …

D1 got an offer at the charter school, and she’s super excited. She met the other teachers yesterday and was impressed with them, as she was with the principal. She hasn’t seen an offer letter or contract, and the school is just in the process of signing the final lease, but it seems like this will go forward. She and H plan to move closer to where the school is (he’ll do the commuting), because they should also be able to buy a house there. Hope there are no glitches now!

And we celebrated D2’s 25th last night. Hard to believe …

Good morning.
First off, hex upon FB family shenanigans and hug, DTE
Kudos, Z, on your D’s job.
Happy-empty-nest to Oregon and TimE-mgmt mojo to Fallgirl

Well, I’m two weeks into my crazy pool experiment and its been mystifying. Despite the treatment I still have crazy high phosphate levels, but for a week running, testing and talking to manufacturers of different test kits etc. I couldn’t even accurately read results (or rather, couldn’t believe them) until I broke down and bought a high po4 test meter that indeed confirmed 40,000 ppb.

The next leg of the experiment at this point is to see whether or not I can actually run the swg system without further treatment/removal–without having the cell shut down from fouling. Results ave been mixed for the first 24 hrs. I’m totally sick of this little project but have no one but myself to blame

The extra pressure comes from promising my mom that the pool would be heated in time for her Mothers Day visit here. Last year, after a M-day swim and hot tub, she ran around the house saying she felt ten years younger  It was hilarious.

I now know that my pool in its former state was actually the fountain of youth with so much nurturing orthophosphate in it  Hi ho. The whole thing strikes me as dark art.

In other news, mcson has moonlighted a bit this weekend painting sections of the house exterior I never got to last year. Which explains the unexpected rain  He was totally insecure about the work and insists I’m an expert painter so he’s never learned to paint properly. I didn’t believe him at first, but it became comically clear this is possibly true. So he’s now been trained in “how to house paint 101” which makes me wonder what other practical tasks or skills my DIY inclinations have robbed him of

He has the spirit of a “maker” and usually is quick to take on challenges that are mechanical/require solutions etc. So it just seemed funny that he was intimidated by something as easy and mindless as painting…but he has had that motor skill deficit all this life so that played in, I think. I’m pretty ham-fisted too though, and the only way I’ve gotten better is to just do stuff

At any rate, it was lovely to have progress on the house front while I was messing with the electrician on the swg install, etc. I’m getting ready to plant a new bed in that area as soon as the painting is finished, and. Have stone coming Tuesday.

KMC…I admire your tenacity and ability to figure out how to improve your pool! Good luck!

We have the docks and boats in the water at the lake.Went for a boat ride yesterday and loved it! May is usually a hit and miss month for nice weather so we’re hoping the sun continues to shine! H is really enjoying his new job.I am happy that he is much more relaxed.

Not much new around here. Have been researching health care options as H talks about retiring in a few years. I really need a new project!

I know I’ve been AWOL. Traveled on business on Tuesday, at a client’s office most of the day Wednesday, then went to see my mom on Thursday. Tried to teach her how to use her iPhone (she’s still scared of it), worked on medical bills, took her to a friend’s funeral, did yard work, fun and games…She is such a negative person.

Those of you on the MOB dress thread have seen it, but otherwise I will share the cool dress I bought for Mom to wear to Son’s wedding (that we had to “majorly” talk her into):

As I recall, none of us have kids left in HS, right? I was very disappointed when H told me that he early-voted against the school district bond package. He has now become one of those people who say “I don’t have kids in the schools anymore so why should I pay for it.” I argued (a) property values, and (b) others did it for us when our kids were in school.

Do you still feel supportive of your local schools? (I know that some of you had kids in private schools.)

MP…Love the dress!Yes, I still vote for the school levies here.

We have always voted for schools even though we have always had our kids in private schools. We just believe so strongly in education. We also support our town.
All you guys are so active makes me jealous. I have now a back problem that may need surgery. If you saw me you would never know. I asked my doctor if I was a complicated patient he said “I guess so, but you are so functional” after this semester I don’t feel very functional!
opened our lake cottage too. Love this time of year.
I went MOB shopping with a friend. It is a daunting task. I think I would want a tea length dress. She will look beautiful. Dillards has lovely dresses .
Congrats on the teaching job. D2 boyfriend is looking for a job now. He is an engineer don’t know how that market is.

MP love the dress

Completely in favor of funding the schools for both moral and prudential reasons.

Love the dress MP. I have started looking just to get ideas but still way to far away to look seriously yet. I’m opting for floor length but need to figure out the venue first. D isn’t moving to fast on making a decision.

We support our schools although sadly they have started getting rid of some of the programs that my children used. No more gifted program. No more IB program. Both my kids were in both. Sad as I think that is what let them get into the school of their choice and made the transition to college easier as they had had lots of work in HS.
