Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Really?! That’s fabulous!

theorymom–I hope he has a quick recovery. One of my work collegues told me today that her “teacher” son has H1N1 and is miserable.

boyx3mom–fabulous story. Thanks for sharing. It gives all of us dealing with our first or second one off to college a peek into the future (hopefully).

D just emailed me. Very excited! She had two tests today and thinks she did well on both. She was worried about the econ test because it was a lot of multiple choice, which she doesn’t do well on typically, and the practice test wasn’t so good. The prof posted the MC answers online so she knows she did well on that part. She felt good about the short answers/essays. Yeah! I was worried a bit.

TM… I am so sorry you son is sick! The most favorite freudian slip in this house is, if it’s not one thing, it’s your mother! So yes, I think you are destined to worry the rest of you life - we all are. (It will just vary in degrees dependent on child and weather).

Son has first big test today in Calc II. They have them at night for some reason. Never heard of such a thing. He has another one tomorrow night in what they lovingly refer to as Cell Hell. (I will assume they will block it out but assume it rhymes with cell and begins with an H). He texted me this afternoon and said he wondered if Math test were still going to be his nemesis in college. I just said to breath and take your time. Hope that was good advice because that’s as good as Ive got these days.

Looks like the weather is going to be chilly with a side of rain while we are there. Yuk. So… I hope there is more to do than walk around or hike because that wont be fun at all.

D may be learning that there aren’t quite enough hours in the day to do everything she wants to do. H had a sad phone call with her today as she was contemplating dropping one of her 2 ECs because she couldn’t get all her assignments done for today. It sounds like he did a nice job of advising her to talk with the captain and/or advisor for additional help and not telling her what she should do. I think she knew I would be able to be as impartial as he was.

She has always pushed her limits and would drive me crazy in high school with her endless activities and late nights of homework. The EC is her one opportunity for exercise, so I’m hoping she can find a way to do it at a reduced level or perhaps pick it up again later.

lol I’m having t-shirts made. I’ll split the profits with you, Modadunn!

That is an awesome phrase! And, very appropriate at our house (& elsewhere, I’m sure!).

Hope your son feels better, #theorymom!

Love it Modadunn - of it’s not one thing it’s your mother
priceless

S is feeling very very poorly. I told him not to hesitate to go back to Health Services if he took a turn for the worse.

theorymom - Hope your son kicks this quickly. It’s hard being sick the first few months away. After the adjustment I think it’s a bit easier but even today when I really am sick I would love to have my mother near by.

Here’s a bit of news: Son’s roommate wants to leave the school. He definitely won’t be back after this school year; he may not be back next semester. He says he doesn’t like the weather but for heaven’s sake, he was raised just three hours north. I doubt that it’s grades. Maybe he doesn’t like the people in his department. I suspect he’ll be around next semester because he’s a theatre major looking at auditioned programs and I can’t imagine that one can transfer into a good program mid-year. Son admitted that he will miss his large flat screened TV the most.

tm, hope your S is feeling better soon! It’s hard enough to be sick, but being far away from and all the pressure of school make it much worse.

NSM, I don’t think I’ve wished you a speedy recovery yet, so here it is. Hope PT isn’t too painful.

D had to have a TB test for a volunteer position. Last night, a little after 10, she texted me to say she thinks the test is positive and sent me a tiny cell phone pic of her arm. I told her to go to Health Services this morning. I seriously doubt she has TB, but I’m flattered she thinks so highly of my parenting skills that I can diagnose illnesses by cell phone.

NM, joining the chorus of well-wishers for a speedy recovery.

theorymom – for your son too!

Modadunn – D had her 3 major tests last week; 2 scheduled at night (at the same time, so she had to ask to have one changed). I’d never heard of that either, except for finals, etc.

We’re getting regular texts this week as D reports her scores on all these tests. The last one (after acing her chemistry test) ended “I love college.” This is a bit ironic, because working on college apps was one of the most stressful things we’ve done – she simply was uninterested in talking about college at all, and kept saying she really wasn’t looking forward to it (Just happy at home and in HS). If she had known how much she would like it, I wonder what difference it would have made in the process of applications. Isn’t hindsight wonderful?

LOL! What is it w/ kids who go off to school in NC? At the end of 2nd semester of D’s sophomore year she called home to say she’d had stomach pains all day that weren’t getting any better and she thought maybe she had appendicitis – what should she do? Here we are 700 miles away and she’s the one who is a certified NC EMT! H’s response? “You’re an EMT, what do you think you should do? Perhaps a trip to Student Health?” (And yes, she did have appendicitis.) I’m quite sure we’ll be teasing her for a long time about that one! :)

S had a bladder infection last year. I know – uncommon in a guy. Called us on Sat. night. His girl friend had been down to visit over the previous week and she was mad because he didn’t feel good and was tired. She left, he called us and said he THOUGHT he had a bladder infection but health services wasn’t open on the weekends and what should he do until Monday. He had a fever but didn’t want to go to the hospital. Luckily his nice roommate who had a car took him to get some cranberry juice. Kept if from getting worse until Monday morning. Health services said it was a good idea. He told them that his mother had diagnosed him from 500+ miles away. I will say I was guessing but seemed to help. What is it. We are just SUPPOSED to know?

Good luck to all.

LOL at the diagnosis by cell phone.

I was talking to my D’s former club coach today. He also has a 2013er at D’s school. Also within 1/2 hour from home. We were talking about how our children have realized quickly that attending the major university in their hometown and growing up here are two different things. His son called to ask him where to buy shampoo and conditioner. I just laughed. At least my D would have the excuse she lived elsewhere for 2/3’s of her life.

I also learned today that the residents halls and food service are ready for H1N1. They’ve always offered a “sick tray” for students, but are now offering a tray more geared towards the flu–calling it a wellness kit. It includes soups, clear liquids, jello, etc. There are also sick rooms somewhere on campus apparently. Good to know.

I did get a regular flu shot today. Anyone else get one yet?

“Son admitted that he will miss his large flat screened TV the most.” Almost lost my wine at this one!!
PS I did something funny - checked on the “Parents of the HS Class of 2009” from a year ago today. EEEK!! Fretting about what scores to send, what colleges to visit! It seems a million miles away, doesn’t it??

BTW - We’re visiting D Halloween weekend. I think I’ll bring Jello, frozen chicken soup, etc just in case to keep in fridge. Although, I think she has already had H1N1.
Any other ideas for food from home??

My daughter asked me to send her tortilla chips. From Minnesota. To California. Because it takes too long to walk to the grocery store from campus!

lunitari – our kids should get together. My son had me send him some salsa. But it least it makes more sense since I sent it from Texas to Missouri.

woody–my d loves those soup to go things, and how bout those special snacks they love

funny, I’m going to d’s parents’ weekend tomorrow and I’m bringing frozen matzoh ball soup, guess it’s not as weird as I thought :)

Tortilla chips to California :: Coals to Newcastle…
