Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

historymom - sorry you not feeling all the way better. maybe you need a couple more of owlice’s mimosas? ;)

my shameful new Tivo addiction? Say Yes to the Dress!

My Lord! We’ve hit 5000!!

This thread grew even faster than the 09 one I think. Weren’t we pusihing to get to 3K last Feb or March when that thread was 10 months old?

What a bunch of jabberwockies ;)

Thanks for the get well wishes…I am looking at the mountain of laundry that I need to deal with today and feeling sicker :P

never mind I just checked that thread and realized that any aptitude my kids have with numbers didn’t come from me.

Ahhh…reading aloud! I still sign everything to Ds with “I’ll Love you forever”…hard not to write “As long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.” sniff…

Whoa…5000! Just think if we would have merged the '09 thread with this one!!!

My Ds and I love:

Glee
America’s Next Top Model
What Not to Wear
So You Think You Can Dance
just added Project Runway
and Say Yes to the Dress…something about that show is addicting

I agree. when I start imagining myself as the mother of the bride (my Ds are 16 and 18!!) I know it’s time to turn it off ;)

But is has caused some perhaps helpful introspection. You see a young woman come out of the dressing room just loving a dress, then her mom tells her how terrible she looks…the reflex is to hate the mom but then I wonder, would I be “painfully honest” with my own Ds? Would I be able to hold my tongue? Interesting to ponder…okay, maybe it is time to turn it off…

oh no, I won’t be that mother! I’m sure I’ll be the one who says things like “I’m happy with whatever you like honey - it’s your day” and “you’ll be beautiful no matter what you wear”

Good thing I (hopefully) have many years to prepare for this ;)

Just talked to S - sounded like he just woke up. One of his roommates was still asleep. He’s definitely happy that term is over. I’m hoping he’ll use the 10-day break to visit the Career center and explore off-campus. But I imagine a significant amount of time will be spent playing games on the computer. I miss the days when I could physically pull him away from the computer.

As for TV, yes, ditto to all the shows mentioned. Add Big Bang Theory.

PRJ, I LOVE Glee! We have different vcr/tivo/whatever setups: boys down and lonely female (aka me) upstairs. It gets kind of lonely sometimes, but there’s only so much football a girl can watch…

Just finished cleaning S2s room in anticipation of his arrival home tomorrow.

Last night we did a REALLY fun thing. A girlfriend of mine (who was widowed last year) had 7 of us moms over (we all have a freshman in college, and some of us other co-eds as well) to have a “care package” party. We all brought a few items, none overly expensive, from food/cold remedies/practical stuff to silly Halloween items. Everything fit in the medium-sized priority mail boxes, and we all wrote a note to one anothers kids on the outside back of the box. There might have been wine and snacks involved on our end. It was just a wonderful get-together!

Here are some of the items that we put in them (I’m sending mine to older son, whose bday is next week, though I got some of the items for S2 coming home): stick-up air fresheners, Emergen-C, rubber mouse, bag of choc-vanilla swirl jet puff marshmallows, plastic “class of 2009” cup with jelly bellies, mini-activity book, silly putty, bubbles, a CONDOM (some of us put one in, others didn’t–I did, because S is turning 21 in a week and will think its funny, but wouldn’t have sent one to S2 without additional wine); mini-flashlight, U of Oregon decal for dorm room window, mini tissues, misc. candy, hand warmers, fruit leather, and some other little items. I highly recommend this for moms who are missing their kiddos–we’re going to do another for Valentine’s Day (prob based on what the kids did- and didn’t like)

How to embarrass your son to death: Put a condom in care package from mom. LOL.

Re: Say Yes to the Dress–

I got addicted last year when DIL and I watched it together-long-distance-by-cell phone, while she was in gown - shopping mode.

Last July, she was the most beautiful bride of all.
S1 did good.

well son’s trip home is off to a bad start.
Lost his cell phone on the shuttle (who says none has been turned in) had to find a pay phone to call home (I was not here so message was taken by H) Never used a pay phone before - live and learn
Had his toiletries confiscated at security (live and learn again) and now has to wait 4 hours for a connecting flight.
hmmm
wonder what kind of mood he’ll be in when I finally pick him up

joint faves here are How I met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory

theorymom, that’s too bad. D, who wants to go to school “as far away from home as possible,” needs to hear a bunch of stories like his.

Missypie, exactly, though S1 will LOVE it. Some daughters got them too…lol. and #TM, I hope he’s just happy to be home and not have to be responsible for a couple of days.

missypie is this D a soph or a jr this year? Just wondering how long we have to drum up horror stories of student travel.

You guys know how much I was pulling for D to choose Trinity U but I have to admit that learning that there is only 1 daily non-stop between SA and SFO was a bit daunting and knowing that I can drive 2.5 hours to get her is comforting!

SJTH I was pulling equally for WU  and I absolutely LOVE your care package night! Fabulous and I will steal it for another holiday since I’ve already done the ones for Haloween which I will be HAND DELIVERING TOMORROWW   :)

theory enjoy your boy!

oh #theorymom, what a shame. just to give you hope, D lost her Ipod on an airport shuttle (at JFK no less) and the person who found it actually called and then mailed it to us. same D lost her cell phone in an airport and the person who found it didn’t turn it in right away, so it too resurfaced several days later. (do you all see a pattern with this child and her belongings?)

Historymom, yippee–so glad you can lay eyes on those girls.

PRJ, #TM etc., S2 has a shuttle to catch in the am, IF he gets up and IF he goes to the right location. Will he have ID, leave anything? I fully expect a 3:30 am (time difference) call with some kind of issue…
