Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

oh, #tm, I am so sorry about the puppy! and that you are feeling lousy. I hope you are on the mend soon.

H and I were pleasantly surprised to see that D had registered for Linear Algebra next semester, only to learn that it is a place-holder on her schedule until she can confirm that her AP Calc test score has been reported to the college, which will fulfill her only math requirement. our mathematically-gifted D has decided that she never wants to take another math class. sigh.

D2 was born the day before DH’s birthday. while I was in labor he asked if maybe I could wait and deliever her the next day so they could have the same birthday. I can’t remember exactly what I said but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t something I could repeat to all you nice people :D

tm… the news about your puppy is so so sad. And to be sick on top of it must have been an emotional roller coaster. So so sorry.

Happy Birthday to your D, Missy. Our own D - now D16 - was in such an incredible mood. So this morning I wrote a little poem (just silly) and while writing realized she was a Wednesday child - who (according to THAT poem) is full of woe. Sure does explain a few things. I ended up going to Tiffanys yesterday and bought her a necklace - actually two and will decide today which to give her. It was so funny though. While I was there three other mothers were all there buying their daughter’s sweet 16 gifts. Nothing like a cliche I suppose. Of course it took me all day and I bought some other things as well which some I will now save until Christmas. So in that regard, this will be the earliest I’ve ever started shopping for the holidays! With a ski hill owned by the college, I think my son is going to ask for skis for his birthday. He never really got into the whole snowboard thing, but I am thinking investing in skis is a little premature at this point.

PRJ, too funny on the labor story. My H wanted to finish the movie he was watching (which just happened to be From Here to Eternity) before taking me to the hospital when I went into labor.

I’m sorry to hear about the poor puppy. That would be so awful.

It sounds like kids are getting set with spring registation. Our senior doesn’t register until next week and I think our freshman’s registration isn’t until Nov. 17th.

I was in labor on my birthday and D2 was born 12;46 am. fully dilated at 11:00 they said maybe you can push the baby out for your birthday. That was not a priority. She has her own birthday makes for a crazy week DEC 28 and 29 th respectively. I always say she was the best birthday present I have ever received.

Modadunn…maybe skis from Play it Again sports would work until he knows he wants to stick with it???

Saw a story on news last night that said retailers got burned with too much inventory last year so not stocking as much this season. Proceeded to say shop early or there won’t be much to pick from. Was interesting.

D2 coming home this weekend. Will have some long talks about staying or transferring. After checking with schools she is possibly interested in she has chosen her spring classes. Now getting word that her present coach wont let her take a calc class because it meets during the time he wants to have practice. She is not a happy camper because she has to have calc in order to transfer in to the program she wants at one of the universities. Ahh…seems like nothing is going to be easy for her this year.

NM, sorry to hear about the calc conflict. That is a very tough call and may push her to make a decision before she’s ready. Is she assuming she will continue to play her sport if she transfers? If so, then I guess leaving the team in order to take calc wouldn’t be an option either. I wouldn’t have any idea what to advise her in a situation like that. I’m glad she is coming home for the week-end so she will have your support whatever she decides.

Thanks for the shoulders guys.
I am now on a big gun antibiotic and codeine cough medicine - finally got a night’s sleep (sorta - 4 solid hours - better than the 45 minutes at a time I have been living with)
Puppy girl is on prophylactic abx and stool samples to the vet daily - so far so good.
Hoping for a turn of luck now.

Holiday music BEFORE T-day?!?!? Unbelievable.
Wonder what S would think of a plane ticket for a xmas present? Probably not much. I wonder if hubby would make a pact with me not to exchange this year. I wonder if our friends up the street would be insulted if we do not join them this year as we have for past 8, for dinner and gift exchange (they invite the entire hillside - it gets…tedious…)

I will still cut a tree from the property and do my usual minimal decorating. I am hoping S will be up for tree-hunting with me - no fun to do it by one’s self - by then there will be snow.

Mine is typically cooperative. Last year I said, “Why don’t you arrange for a DVR [we were the last people in the United States still recording shows on our VCR] and we’ll wrap the box and put it under the tree?” He agreed and it worked out great.

We usually do Christmas in a BIG way (16-18 decorated themed trees, etc.) and way too many presents. I must cut down this year because I know a pay cut will be coming in January.

Modadunn, some advice re: skis for your son. Splurge on the boots, skimp on the skis. Boots are the most, in fact the only truly critical piece of equipment for skiers. If his boots are inappropriate or don’t fit properly, it won’t matter how much you spend on skis - he will be miserable.

theorymom, I’m so sorry to hear about your puppy, and I’m sending healing karma your way for a quick recovery.

My husband has it easy - I usually find exactly what I want, order it, then tell him it’s my whatever gift. Crass? Perhaps, but we’re both happier this way. He has managed to sneak in a few surprises here and there.

After crummy news we get some good news to balance things out!!! D1 just got her first job offer!! Hooray!!! We are thrilled! It is what she went to school for and they are willing to hire her part time(20 hrs) for online work until she graduates in May. Then she can work full time. She is thrilled and relieved. She didn’t even know there was an opening…a consultant from NY called and offered her the position based on networking from her summer internship! Wow! So truly grateful!

NM, that is truly awesome news. Congratulations. I hope we will be in a position to celebrate something similar before S1 leaves Brazil in late January. Today is his first day of work, also part-time 20-30 hours/week for the firm he hopes to ultimately get an offer from for after he graduates this May. This is such a tough job market for these grads, as so many threads have shown. Will your D be working in NYC and is she excited about that?

Ah…a job…in her field…fantastic!

Congrats, NM and D!

No…she will not be in NY… the consultant who hired was! Sorry, I wasn’t clear. Must have been the excitement! The job is in another midwest state…not too far from home. She is a marketing and sports management major and has had internships with professional hockey and baseball teams. She attends a very small private LAC here in the midwest that is never mentioned on CC. They have been so helpful and supportive of her and it has been a wonderful experience for her. I am so grateful that she found the right school for her to blossom!

Thanks for letting me share my excitement and for all of your kind words!

NM, that is the dream field for a lot of guys I know. Is she a big sports fan? I remember many many years ago doing a rating agency site visit for the financing of a stadium for the Timberwolves. Every single decision maker at this huge table from the mayor to the investment banker to the bond counsel was female and then there were about forty guys arranged in an outer circle along the walls. It was just one of those moments. I think your D is going to get a chance to have some of those moments in her chosen field as well. Very cool.

Great news NM!

She is a HUGE sports fan, her father’s daughter. Was a multiple sport athlete and very good student. I think her biggest asset is her personality and ability to get along with anyone and be comfortable in any situation. Ha…remember when I said my girls were so different! I am just so proud of her and…can I say this???..relieved that she will have a job and be truly launched!!! Whew! :)

NM–a job? a good job? in her field? before graduation? Wow!! Congratulations to your D1. I would be positively giddy!

tm, I’m so sorry about your pup. I complain about my rescue mutt all the time, but would be lost without him. So sorry to hear you’re feeling so sick, too. Hope the drugs kick in quickly.

I’m starting to feel achy and congested now. S & I are going to get t-shirts that say “I went to Parents’ Weekend and all I got is this lousy flu.” H was sick in early Spring, so we’re hoping he’s immune.

NM, it sounds like your D has the total package. You have every right to be proud. You should add your good news to the college senior thread and celebrate to your heart’s delight. It just sounds perfect.

I have to admit, I still lack confidence sometimes in my own two guys. When my oldest does get a job, I will probably smoothly transition into worrying whether he can actually DO the job.
