Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

DH arrived home late last night after an out of town trip. When he asked me “What’s new around here?” I flashed on Missypie’s trees and George Clooney and the bus and Zim’s wonderful descriptions, and I just said “Not too much, just catching up with some friends.”

He has no idea how much time I spend on CC.

Completely jealous of meeting so many friends, RRAH…

Son’s birthday is on the 3rd of December (and remember he goes back to school on the 29th!), so not sure how we’ll handle that one. I was going to send him some things, but truthfully I’d have to mail now and HOPE he goes to his mailbox - which he never does. I just realized that we will not spend his birthday with him for the next four years! Time to change up how we celebrate. D24.999999’s birthday is tomorrow. Seriously… how did I get so old that I have a 25 year old?

^ Modadunn, you didn’t get old. Children age on an exponential scale relative to their parents. Don’t believe me? Consider how much physical and cognitive growth she’s been through in the past 25 years. Why, in another 40 years or so, your daughter may actually pass you up! ;)

OK, fellow application-season veterans – if you missed this thread, I think it’ll bring back a memory or two from last year.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/814660-how-bad-not-too-bad.html

Suddenly the stresses of phone calls, grades, and when’s-he-coming-home-again seem… rather tame… :D

Boy I don’t miss the stress of college search/applications/standardized tests/etc. Not at all!

S arrives late tonight. Looking forward to having my house full again. I’m sure much of his time will be spent with the GF (same one since mid his freshmen year and he’s a senior in college now) but they have a tendency to hang out at our house so I’ll be seeing alot of both of them.

D’s friends don’t arrive home before Tues. evening so that is why I had the time with her yesterday. I’m at work today so she has the house to herself - well except for the huge 80+ pound dog. I’m sure she will enjoy the quiet but will be ready to talk when we get home after a full day by herself. Love the fact that she has the entire week off.

Modadunn - Do you have an iphone? If so, here’s a program I loved when s. was in Europe, watched the real time GPS all the way across the ocean: The app is calld FLIGHTTrack Pro.
Also, my DS had a special gift of missing connector flights at xmas when he used to travel to Winnipeg-Toronto-Det to see his dad and family. -No fault of his own, just always seemed to be 5 min after connector takeoff. Over time, we eventually developed the: food (energy bars, etc.) + water + cash-on-hand + comfy travel clothes that double as pjs + carryon only approach. Cash on hand was for the inevitable cab fare at 3.a.m. New Years. You get the idea ; )
That said, now using magic shield against any and all travel delays!

kmccrindle, I use Flight Track too–ok, maybe a little obsessively… I’m so excited for everyone to see their kiddos! Safe and on-time travels everyone!

The superquick trip to see Son’s choir concert is now history…the choir sounded great and the music was a lot more difficult than Son had been exposed to in high school. He was glad we came. It was funny to see the boys in their formal attire - you get 15 boys left on their own with the instruction to “wear a tuxedo” and you get 1) tux with no cumberbund (Son), 2) black suit instead of tux, 3) no tie, and 4) brown shoes with tux.

You’ve got to save me a bit of the best of the wine and other bus ride treats. I live very close to a major airport, so I think that after the home tour, we should meet Zim at Victoria Falls!!!

Good Morning! Crazy weekend at our house. D2 was home for a bit and then back to school Sun night until Wed when she heads back here for Thanksgiving. She is delightful when home and seems calm and confident about her decision to transfer at year end.

We had H’s big Gala this weekend. Wine tasting event was fun and Gala was wonderful. Nice to get dressed up and see H in his tux. Unfortunately still no dancing for me! House is in need of a good cleaning before Thanksgiving company arrives but I still can’t kneel or squat. Driving me crazy!

Time for H to put away the tux and get to cleaning!

My girls are coming home today: TwinK is sick and is going to her classes today but not meeting with her First Year cohort tomorrow. It’s her only class and she has perfect attendance so far so she is coming home to be cared for by moi.

So sorry that she is sick but looking forward to having an additional 24 hours.

Safe trips and happy visits to you and all of your offspring!

Exactly, missypie!!! Thanks for the laugh! Told him he has bathroom duty! Hahaha!

Oh, no historymom! Hope TwinK feels better soon with all of your love and comfort! Sending healing thoughts and prayers!

dte…thinking of you, too! Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving and hoping your chemo is going as well as can be expected. Take care of yourself!

Of course, last time my own H had bathroom cleaning duty before company, when the company arrived the bathroom was still sporting the bucket, mop and cleaning supplies…guess he wanted to make sure everyone knew he had cleaned it. (No towels in the bathroom, of course.)

H is a dear and admirable man but honestly whenever he does a house-hold chore outside the normal realm of his house-hold chores he acts as though I should be throwing a parade in his honor.

I have windows to finish and bathrooms and floors to do but other than that my house cleaning projects are done. Now to organize the timing of the food prep…I may need to use my MIL’s oven since I have just one. It would make sure that everything is hot and ready to go at once.

Is anyone else trying new recipes this year? I am trying two from sunset, carrots w/pecans and meyer lemon green beans, and 1 from an online site for baked cranberry brie. The carrot recipe asks you to use olive oil in the camelization process but I think I will opt for butter instead. Any thoughts? It’s Thanksgiving, time to bust out the high calorie, artery hardening good stuff!

H makes from scratch pumpkin pies… real (not canned) pumpkind, homemade crust. they really are delicious and I’m always grateful, but I’ll make maybe 15 things for Thanksgiving dinner and he’ll make the one and we’ll all be expected to spend a very long time praising the pies.

historymom…the veggie recipes sound yummy! Do you have a link??? I make steamed green beans and baby carrots in yellow squash collars with a butter, garlic and lemon sauce poured over them and then sprinkled with sliced almonds. I am brining the turkey for the first time and then using a butter and herb rub placed under the skin and then roasting. D2 makes a corn casserole with the Jiffy cornmeal muffin mix and sour cream…she loves it! She and I will make the pumpkin pies on Wednesday night. D1 will not make it home for the very first time. We are sad. :(

How sad, NM…I hope someone is “adopting her” on Thanksgiving day.

Or is it not sad for her at all? Is she doing something more “fun”?

I haven’t been on this thread for awhile, but wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and all of your kids a safe trip home. D will be coming home tomorrow night and a friend of hers will be arriving on Wednesday. My kids have already been put on notice that they will be cleaning on Wednesday as I had surgery last week (I’m fine, but shouldn’t be cleaning).

NM- tell me about the cassarole with the Jiffy corn bread mix and sour cream, sounds like something S would like.

missypie: Funny I think maybe many our men were raised with dads who didn’t really know there way around a kitchen and had only distant relationships with vacuums and dust rags. Therefore whatever they do should be celebrated and praised because they are so much more evolved than their dads. For me I do praise the man…it keeps him willing to do more stuff ;)

Both are simple enough for me but sound delish. So sorry your D1 won’t be home. I know you will be missing her. :frowning: Your veggie recipe sounds amazing but too complicated for me. Do you slice the squash and hollow it out then insert the beans and carrots? Or am I misunderstanding the “collars”

Sounds like some of you are cooking way too healthy! One year we thought that our neighbor’s vegan D would be coming over for Thanksgiving. It was then that I realized that everything I make is loaded with butter, cheese or cream.
