Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Owlice, you sound so…sane…And the Owlet rocks! Because of you all, I’m toying with serving buffet style rather than passing too… 13 people, the food gets cold while we wait for the passing… then sit down together a the table…

S1 arrived last night–I had not seen him since August 1!!! We chatted a bit, then he hung with S3–and this a.m. we’re taking the inlaws out to bfast while H has a few morning meetings. S2 comes in late tonight–can’t wait to see how the two college boys relate.

See everyone on the other side!! Thank you so much for being here–even a year after the application journey together! You’re the best!

Hi all! Happy Thanksgiving! D was supposed to come home later today (I bought tickets rather inexpensive early in August - thanks for the tip!). As it turned out, D’s classes were cancelled today and she only had 1 class yesterday that she was excused from … so she came home Monday night!

She hasn’t been home, in her own bed, since early August. It is such a treat to have her home. Yesterday I had to worked in NYC, so she came along and did some shopping, even ribbed to her sorority sisters that she had a New York HAWTDAWG!

She’s visiting her “old” high school, guidance counselor who helped her along throughout senior year, to get into her #1 school.

Anyway, off to Marshall’s to look for carry-on luggage only, as a Christmas gift (no hauling big suitcases for short trips home).

She flies back Sunday afternoon, isn’t that the most heavily traveled day of the year?

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Hi JSM!!! We have missed you! Glad D is home safe and happy! Happy Thanksgiving!

Regarding the corn casserole - I’ve made the recipe many times over the past 20 years or so. I bake mine in a 9 x 13 pan, so it depends on how big a serving people take. I made it for a church potluck a couple of weeks ago (our Harvest Dinner) and I think I cut it into 12 or 15 pieces (3 x 4 or 3 x 5).

I follow along in this forum daily but rarely post. I enjoy the camaraderie! Unfortunately, my D won’t make it home for Thanksgiving. It’s too far (24 hour drive) and we don’t have the money for a plane ticket. Fortunately, her school has tons of international students plus students from every state and doesn’t shut down for the holiday. A friend from church is going to Boston to have Thanksgiving dinner with her grown children, and has invited her over.

My d wished she could come home, but also has several papers due after the break so hopes to get lots of work done. She’ll get to come home December 18, so we’ll just need to wait a little longer!

college_query, welcome and thanks for reading my mind! I brought the corn casserole recipe and ingredients to my MIL’s but forgot to ask how big a dish to bake it in. just logged in to ask and voila there is my answer!

welcome back JSM :)

as of a moment ago D had boarded her plane, on time no less! yippee!

D2 should get here any minute. No snow…just rain, hooray! Welcome college_query! Yes, the orignal corn casserole recipe calls for a 9x13 pan. I have switched to a prettier round casserole dish. It is an adaptable recipe!

D arrived late last night. I swear if USAir ever delivers her on time I’ll faint. This afternoon she was getting ready to go out to lunch with her girlfriends and called down the stairs “Mooooom, come talk to me. I’m not used to getting dressed by myself anymore” I was up those stairs like a shot and enjoyed catching up with her. Her communication from school tends to be very text heavy.

S1 arrived from DC late last night, slept late this morning and has been napping all afternoon. But that’s all right…
because S1 and his wife (world’s best DIL) arrive tonight from DC
so we get to brave OHare twice in a row.
I’m not sure why they couldn’t coordinate their flights?
But at least they will be here.

I’m terribly missing S2–he has been in the Netherlands on study abroad since August 16 and won’t be home til December 25. He’s the one who likes to cook with me. It feels strange not to have him in the kitchen with me.

Happy T-day to all!

i am glad everyone is getting home and you are enjoying your children. D1 flight is delayed 1.5 hrs but I was warned with a late flight this could happen. She met up with a friend from school at the airport so I am glad she has company. I hate it when kids are alone, but she is pretty good about travel. Boysx3 sorry about your netherlands son glad you will see him Dec 25 its coming! Everyone here Have a wonderful Thanksgiving I am thankful for all of you . Also I have a soft spot for John cusak, and Hugh Jackman can they come on the trip?

Anyone you want, DTE!

Have a wonderful holiday ! I hope you are feeling stronger today.

Odessagirl is home! Kids in the house last night. Love it. All of the noise and laughter.

I am SOOO bring Tim McGraw on the bus trip with me.

Going to WV for Thanksgiving for 2 nights.

See ya on the other side.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving day tomorrow, all.

Eddie

DTE, make your list - you can have anyone you want. I think the back seat holds 5, so you can add two more if you want. Since I’ll be waiting at the destination, you can have Johnny Depp if you like.

Son was about an hour late last night - had to have an emergency meeting about some group project. It seems one of the group members lives off campus and has a dicey internet connectoin, thus all the communication they thought was happening wasn’t.

Inlaws arrived today. They drove it in two days and SPENT LAST NIGHT IN THEIR CAR!!! Old, loads of $, and FIL won’t pay for a hotel room. What can I say?

The caramel apple cake was a big fail. I think there was a typo in the recipe that I got from a magazine (they probably published a correction the next month.) The cake looked like a science experiment - bubbling over like lava in the oven, kitchen filled with smoke. Except, it seems to have turned out okay. With fresh carmelized apples in the middle and homemade caramel buttercream icing, it can’t be too bad!

Finishing the last load of Son’s laundry. 18 shirts and 4 pair of underwear. I don’t want to know.

I thought I’d check in and see how all the travelers are faring. I hoping all the remaining 2013ers arrive safely and on time. Safe travels to those of you heading out for other parts in the morning or tonight also.

And gosh, caramel apple cake sounds like it would be excellent! Might it be possible to have some waiting for a busload of guests?

Enjoy these days! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

lol on the laundry, missypie!! Oh, that’s funny!!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

SJTH, thank you, but I’m certain people who know me in real life would say it’s a cover. :smiley: (Thanks; you’re very kind!)

DTE, collecting guys again, are you? Good for you!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Got home to find three packages at my doorstep. Yahoo! I’ve never cycled through the winter before; biking’s been so therapeutic and makes me feel so much better (regardless of what hurts, body or soul) that I want to continue to ride through this winter. So I bought myself a bunch of early Christmas presents: lights, safety vest, cold weather biking tights, more lights, an extra safety vest, and did I mention lights? I’m thinking of commuting (partway) to work, so also got a garmet bag pannier. And some other things. :wink: (All at steep discounts.)
I love coming home to packages! (Court summons and bills, however, I could do without!!)
(A biking-related tale for anyone particularly bored this evening: [Women’s Cycling Discussion Forums - View Single Post - Do not click on the link in this tale](<a href=“Do not click on the link in this tale”>Do not click on the link in this tale))
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Off to buy wine, and then I’ll make lentil-bulgur salad for the kid and his dad to take to their Thanksgiving dinner. Spawn loves this, and it will give him something to eat there besides salad and dinner rolls. He doesn’t like sweet potatoes, the green beans will be seasoned with pork, he doesn’t eat turkey, and the stuffing will have been in the turkey, sooo… lentil-bulgur salad to go.

Fang Jr’s train was supposed to leave at 9:10 tonight. Now it’s supposed to leave two hours late. :(

ACK!! So sorry to read that, Cardinal Fang!

:: pours CF a glass of wine ::

Sorry Fang, but at least he’ll be home. Doesn’t keep you from chomping on the bit though.
S tells me he thinks someone who lives in town will take pity on him and invite him to dinner. I hope so. Major problem with him being SO far away.
But in just 3.5 weeks he’ll be coming home, and that time will fly by. I expect he will bring roughly the same number of underwear as Missy’s boy

Owlice, I about spewed my wine at your cautionary bike tale.
And I gotta love anyone else who uses the word zaftig

yes H is at Logan (1 hr away) flight is 2 hrs late. Better off not to know about underwear I agree! LOL No to Johnny Depp, yes to Tim but it might be hard getting around Faith!
CF hope he gets there soon. pretty soon get to do it agian for Christmas!

theorymom - My son is in the same boat. I will not see him till Christmas. He will cook with other people tomorrow and he hopes that he will have some free dinner from some other dorms in the next 4 days.

theorymom, glad you enjoyed the tale. I had no idea! Who would name a website such a thing?!?! :eek:

:: pours wine for those who want it ::

:: opens the bourbon for the others ::

:D

I have cupcakes and brownies, chocolate-covered strawberries, and lemon-raspberry tarts. I suspect bourbon is not the best drink to offer with cupcakes, hmmm? So I have put on the teapot and have coffee brewing.
