Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Hey folks, if you’re in the market for geeky gifts and haven’t discovered the site, check out thinkgeek.com. Lots of fun toys, binary watches, speaker shirts, et al. It’s a staple around here : ) Another good one for geek watches (can you tell H. collects them?) is Tokyo Flash. Very prompt delivery.
Enjoy the snow day for those having one. We’re gearing up here for a mess in W. Michigan…it’s raining right now but supposed to drop 20 degrees in a day (unless that was a misprint) freeze, dump snow, have 40 m winds in a.m. tomorrow. Hi ho. Hope it clears Sat. as I am headed north to lodge.

theorymom, I thought of #theoryson when I saw the Geek Clock! Don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing to think of a cyperfriend before anyone IRL…

UGH… drove D to school, took almost twice as long and now I have a huge headache. I really just want to go back to bed. Nothing is really stopping me except guilt.

D2’s college canceled classes today. Haven’t heard from D1 yet. All three of us had blizzard warnings last night. Heading out to a friend’s house for some scrapping! Nothing can keep me from my favorite hobby! ;)

60 mile an hour winds and a predicted temperature drop of 30 degrees… but I am headed out to get my hair cut and colored. nothing can keep me from making sure I look good!

It is solid cold here-5 degrees
And our heater is not working up to snuff, so the Tulikivi stove is working overtime

Thanks for the geek gift sites guys

PRJ It’s a noble pursuit but I am thinking 60 MPH winds and Hairdo just don’t play well together. Have fun nonetheless ; )

Stay warm friends…toddies and mulled cider and wine may be in order tonight!.

TwinK is in the middle of her Chem final…send positive thoughts and prayers westward, southward and northward if you will. She has excelled in Lab but has struggled in the class.

TwinE has her Chem final tonight she can use some positive thoughts and prayers toothen they will hop in the car and head home!!!

Prayers and positive/safe travel thoughts going out to all your fry over the next couple of weeks!

Hi everyone! Sounds like we’ve all been keeping the geeky gift industry in business! I got a catalog the other day from something called ExtremeGeek - haven’t checked it out yet. I also like buying the occasional shirt from Woot!. And have I mentioned my son has a pair of fuzzy D20 dice hanging in his car?

Missyoie - love “uncommon goods”!! Thanks for the tip!

I just ordered two of the recycled t-shirt scarves from Uncommon Goods this a.m. - they featured them on the Today show. Cute!

Son is done finals. Last one was “good” which certainly beats “meh.”

Trying not to visualize the extraordinarly awkward goodbye that must be going on at this moment between Aspie Son and his roommate who won’t be returning to school. Guy goodbyes are usually awkward things anyway…Aspie guy + roommate = excruciating.

missypie, congrats on your son being done with finals already. That’s great news.

We had a snow day here but now it’s raining with thunder and lightening, YEESH! My daughter finished her final final today and was going to fly home tonight but I suggested she stay an extra night just to relax and enjoy and come home tomorrow; so glad I did. She would never get out of Chicago today and come into NY. It will be (hopefully) so much more civilized tomorrow!

Son has one final left, but texted of the one today, typing: “It went well I think I over studied a bit but thats not a big issue”

This was the exact text… no punctuation so I can’t tell if he thinks it went well OR it went well but he thinks he may have overstudied. Either one is fine although knowing it went well shows better confidence than merely thinking it went well. Texting sure doesn’t encourage punctuation! But how is over studying an “issue” of any size? Basically, I think this is actually worse than “fine” because there seems to be quite a lot of loopholes at the ready!

Missypie - i ordered the sushi tie and “house rules” beer glasses for S. What a life saver!
Now to combine a couple of posts…my cleaning lady - bless her heart - speaks English, Italian, Spanish and Portugese! Once she absolutely freaked out the house painters who are all Portugese in this part of the world. They were speaking in Portugese and apparently were not very polite. She ran to where they were working and really laid into them. OMG, the looks in their faces! Priceless!
Now to eggmom, a few pages back re: the shirtless faucet fixer… no, I really might offend some of my friends here.
D is in the midst of exams, very stressed out. S is also in the midst of exams…meh, not so much but as usual everything is “fine”.

All of S2’s finals are next week. He comes home on the 18th, so sounds like it runs a little later than other schools. S1 has one final left, also on the 18th so the stress continues.

So finally catching up. Very frozen here. Below zero temps + wind chill.
I was reading and thinking that a lot of kids are done pretty early. Then I realized a week from next Monday D is done and training down to my S to meet up for Christmas. I do not feel ready.(for Christmas). S is newly married and hosting us while he is in and out of residency interviews. This is my first Christmas not in my own home in 25 years. Still putting up a tree at home for D 's time there. It will be a bit different.

TheAnalyst, loved reading your story about your son in Rio. How exciting for him!

D finished finals this week but has a presentation Monday so she’s staying until then and flying home Monday night, flight leaves at 9:30pm so gives her plenty of time to make it to the airport. She prefers a night flight and can always find someone to drive her to the airport. Seems an 8am flight would be out of the question.

who knows if #theoryboy is fine or not. I do know he is alive as he e-mailed to say his bank account had dwindled to $23. No other info

sigh

I just have to keep reminding myself of myself at 18 and away at college. It is not that I did not want to talk to my parents, I just didn’t think about it and when I did, I promptly forgot about the next day. I also called when I needed money (back then there was no e-mail so I guess they knew they would hear from me eventually) This faceless voiceless e-mail, while a godsend in some ways is a bane in others
