Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

I’m awfully squeamish about listening to This American Life on Penn State. I know that lots of college students think its adorable to get drunk and vandalize neighborhoods. I do not.

haha missypie! Ok…will not talk about upcoming oral surgery…need to run out for more Christmas shopping. H and I “gave” each other a new flat screen tv for our bedroom. There will not be presents for us other than what girls give us…first time ever. I told H I hope I don’t get one more candle, one more body spray, etc that I get EVERY year! He was a little peeved and said I was. He said I am hard to buy for. What!!! Makes me sad that he really doesn’t LISTEN to all the clues I give throughout the year. :(

Wisdom teeth! Ugh. We were advised to take care of that when geek_son was 16 (he comes from a long line of crowded-mouth people). Did it over that spring break – couldn’t even wait till that summer because they would have started pushing the other teeth out of place within a month.

Now, here’s the good news: It went very, very smoothly. The dentist referred us to a maxillofacial surgeon. The surgeon insisted on putting him under for it. My first reaction (and geekson’s) was, like heck you’re gonna do that, buddy! But then he explained (in geekson’s case) how close they’d be getting to the nerves and how important it was to have him absolutely immobile and how much less traumatic it would be to just have the general. Actually, he refused to do it with local anesthesia.

So all eventually agreed to it, and geek_son came out of there with everything done just right… talking about how he wanted to write a book about his experience with the anesthesia so others would know what to expect (he doesn’t remember this now :D). They used some sort of pain medication in the IV, which got him over the hump, and then the only thing he needed to take afterward was regular strength Tylenol. He was back at his outside EC (though shaky) a day or two later, which earned him massive “dude, you’re a man!” points from his peers.

Very different from my wisdom-teeth extraction procedure, which took about 20 shots in the dentist’s office and I still felt the pain.

Oh missypie, I’m sorry! No more of this talk from me. :o

H took me out on Sunday to look at vacuum cleaners but we somehow didn’t come home with one. I knew that would be a difficult purchase for him. I am also upset because I wanted to make a new recipe this afternoon (Acorn Squash with Cranberry Butter Pecan Stuffing) because I have some raw cranberries I need to use, but found we are out of pecans. I called H at work to ask why he wouldn’t have added those to a list if he had finished them (since that is a staple in my opinion). His response was he wants to “use everything up.” My response is that I guess that means I’m not supposed to make dinner anymore. I really don’t feel like going to the grocery store today when I have major grocery shopping planned for tomorrow.

With apologies Missypie, this is just too funny not to mention. S2 has a dentist appointment tomorrow for xrays to prove they only removed two of his four wisdom teeth last summer (which we requested for insurance reasons and is what we are quite sure they did) rather than the four they think they did and are trying to bill us for. The plan is to get the other two done in 2010, although this hardly inspires confidence in the oral surgeon.

We used a maxillofacial surgeon also, geek_mom, when our Ds got their wisdom teeth out. He’s the father of one of D1’s friends and did a great job with both kids. I’m not a fan of general anesthesia either, but having had my wisdom teeth taken out with local shots by my general dentist, I could see where using general anesthesia with a surgeon could be much less of an ordeal.

D1 had a surgeon do it. we paid, no dental insurance at the time. She is very fair was on steroids, antibiotics, pain meds. I guess people with her coloring tend to swell more.
Things low key here. presents bought not wrapped. We still do the PJ thing christmas eve.

all is well with S so far.S was given his meds in an IV and does not remember much. Could have had a local but I insisted and therefore paid $500 to get what I wanted for him. He is, remember, literal about everything which now includes following the dentists instuctions to the letter. Makes it easier for me. I have this whole day to get things done and all I want to do is nap. The pj’s we give now are just the same color–no longer do the same design or style. For S it just means a pair of flannels from Target. D’s are more fun and more $$ to buy.
H finally did what I want for a gift. I have told him this for years but finally…we went shopoping together at my favorite artisan shop and picked out a necklace together. Of course after I got home I did not like it anymore:o poor H. D and he went back to the store and she helped him pick between two others that I had looked at both for more $$.

I am just gonna throw this put there. We don’t have dental but our bc/bs covered s’s when he had his done. (there Missy. I offered up some health care).

S worked for H today in one of his plants. Good money but serious manual labor.

Fracket–LOL. Will have to share that with D who is in the air now, just two hours late. I’m just glad her flight took off. What is “This American Life”? I’d like to check it out…

So sorry about all the wisdom teeth worries. D goes to the dentist while she’s home this break. She tells me that they’re coming in–I’ll be rereading these posts for advice if she needs hers out.

Hope everyone’s enjoying the season!

Hi y’all! This weekend DH and I planned to rip up our den carpet (new puppy was the straw that broke that camel’s back) and lay new carpet tile, thinking our kids would be able to help move furniture, etc. HAH! When they finally woke up (after the carpet, padding and tack strips were removed), they managed to avoid being seen. I’m finally not too sore to type, but I really love the look of the carpet tiles (a nice berber pattern). Thinking of giving the kids lumps of coal, however.

“Say Yes to the Dress”!!

Not quite – we haven’t actually bought it yet – but close! Went wedding dress shopping, D1 tried on about 5 or so – but she liked the first one the best (as did I). Not only did she like it, she looks terrific in it.

Gotta love it!

Here’s the link to the This American Life episode about Penn State:

[This American Life](http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=396)

The show is likely to make the drinking problem worse at Penn State next year, as all the parents of the non-drinkers and moderate drinkers refuse to send their kids there.

Z, so glad the two of you liked the same wedding dress. Sounds like the two of you would be too “dull” to make it onto *Say Yes to the Dress /I.

I made the horrible mistake of stopping by a mall on the way home from work to pick up the last few things…it’s enough to make one detest one’s fellow man…rude drivers in the parking lot, a mall full of misfits wandering around trying to figure out which of the ugly picked over things to buy. I found out that the department store I was headed for had been turned into a clearance center, so it was full of things like Easter dresses. BUT, I believe I am finally finished shopping. (Unless someone can suggest a fun, family game for me to buy. [We already have Apples to Apples.])

^^^ Bananagrams

[Amazon.com: Bananagrams: Toys & Games](http://www.amazon.com/dp/1932188126/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=3706864691&ref=pd_sl_42gz2b433h_e)

Just bought Bananagrams for my two nieces and am wishing I bought it for our house as well. Looks like a lot of fun.

A second vote for Bananagrams. We have one at home and D has one at school. It’s great for travel. A friend had one at the dance Nationals last summer and it saved our sanity during the hours of down time.

Looks like I cross posted with sabaray. A third vote for Bananagrams.

Gosh…now I HAVE to get this game! Was looking for something fun for D1. ^^^This sounds like a winner!

Expecting big snow storm starting tomorrow and hitting full force on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Our plans to go to the cabin for Christmas may be in jeopardy! D1’s BF is supposed to travel here late Christmas Eve. Best laid plans…

I am afraid of the dentist.

After most appointments, I sit in my car in a fetal position and sob. Seriously. I guess that’s probably a true phobia, huh?
